2009 is practically a decade away in gaming years. Shit, I'm still waiting for Conan.

I tried RF, and I couldn't stand it. It felt really clunky and I could not stand the movement controls. The only other bad experience I can compare it to was trying Tabula Rasa a couple weeks ago. What a piece of shite that game is. It needs at least another 6 months of work, if not a year.

I ended up going back to Guild Wars recently, and I am really enjoying the simplicity and lack of grind/time sinks. After playing WoW through to level 70, then playing LOTRO until I got bored with it, it's been a refreshing change. I stopped playing it before any of the addon games (Factions, Nightfall, GW:EN) came out, so there is a ton of content.

I was hoping LOTRO would carry me over until Conan came out in October, but as we all know, it was pushed to next year. Until then, playing Guild Wars is time well spent. I'm excited to see where Guild Wars 2 goes, but that's probably going to be an '09 title.

Prez,

Wouldn't you be even more angry if there was a monthly fee to play? I think you need to look into what these games cost to maintain. This isn't quake 2...ship it and forget it.

80. Re: Inflamatory comparisons anyone? Jun 20, 2007, 01:33 MindTrigger

Yeah, I don't see the problem with this if the ads are just part of the environment and make sense in the context of the game's maps. After all, any seasoned FPS player ignores 99% of the visuals once they have seen them a couple times. They just become landmarks for the most part or blend into the immersive atmosphere. I doubt I will really even notice the ads much, but they might make the maps seem visually richer in a general way.

How about blizzard gives us an unlock code for the content in WoW that is not geared toward uber endgame whores who play the game 8+ hours a day?

I had fun leveling to 70 in WoW. When I hit 70 I was faced with 2 choices.

1) roll another toon and redo all the same freakin content like all my guildies who had 3-5 level 70 toons.

2) spend my life grinding rep so I could endlessly run end game raids for gear that won't matter the next time Blizzard increases the level cap.

Needless to say I canceled about 5 days after hitting 70.

Community features in wow? hahahaha no.

Bullshit.

Matrix online isn't doing well because the gameplay sucks ass. It has nothing to do with what sub-genre of MMO it is. I personally can't stand Fantasy MMOs and I'm excited to see more diversity.

Well, I'm rooting for this because we need an updated Star Wars MMO that is not run by SOE. I hope they are doing this, and it turns out great.

Frosty,

Saying you can't develop friendships through gaming is like saying you can't do it over the phone or via letters/email. I have two good friends that are happily married to people they met online, and will laugh and point at you for that statement. You don't have to stand face to face with someone to become friends. I have many friends in real life, and I have even more online. Many of my old friendships from the past are kept alive thanks to the powers of the internets. Seems to me that you are the one lacking in friendships at this point.

MMO's can be a waste of time if they are played too much. I play them casually, which costs me in the game, but I still have fun, and manage to do my 26 or so real life hobbies as well. Everything in moderation.

I had hoped this would be more fun, but really it's boring as hell. I also think the character and character animations are awful. My human toon's arms move like pasta or a rubber hose. The combat is just stupid looking. The only thing that looks really good in this game is the world itself. Everything in it looks like garbage. Porting into buildings?? WTF?

I'm wondering when game developers will take a lesson from Guild Wars. As soon as you get into Guild Wars, you are swept into a quest line that includes some combat. You get a feeling right from the beginning that you are going on a great adventure. I don't understand how a company, in 2007, can release a game that simply starts out with "Go kill 8 wolves and return". I played this game for about 3 hours and was falling asleep by the end. I haven't logged back in since. Pathetic.

Game developers; get a fucking clue. How the hell you people take intellectual property such as LOTRO and Star Wars, and still manage to destroy the experience, I will never understand.

I was really hoping this game would be decent. It sucks balls. I played it for about 4 hours, and as each hour passed I found my mind wondering on to other subjects more and more until I was so bored I left the game. My next move was to uninstall the turd.

Anyone who has played Guild Wars before will tell you how cool it is to be whisked away into an important quest right from the beginning of the game. I ended up not liking the lack of social features in Guild Wars (and WoW), but it had compelling content at least.

The first combat I saw in LOTRO was "kill 8 wolves" or some shit. What a joke. Do game companies actually think this is still ok?? The world itself looked nice, but the characters look like garbage and the animations are even worse. The HUD looked like a cheap knock-off of WoW. What the hell is the deal with having to PORT into buildings? Nice game engine. The quests I did were about as compelling as watching paint dry. The storied the NPCs were telling sucked so bad I had trouble even reading them through. "Blah blah blah blah. Kill 8 wolves"

I'm going to sit back and see how Conan turns out this fall. I don't hold out much hope for it though.

Wait... are you people saying that LOTRO actually turned out GOOD?? I haven't tried it, but I assumed it was pure garbage. I would love to pick it up if I could see a few more good reviews.

I just hit 70 in my one and only WoW toon. I've been playing it casually for the past year, while taking a break from FPS games, waiting for Quake Wars or whatever. Now that I hit 70 and don't plan to grind rep or worry about endgame raids, I'm looking for something else to play.

5. Re: expansion vs sequel Mar 27, 2007, 15:08 MindTrigger

I have to say that I really liked the gameplay of Guild Wars. The quests are mostly better than even the ones I enjoy in WoW. What made me stop playing Guild Wars was that it was a very lonely game. Sure, you can be in a guild, but I missed running across other players out in the persistant game world. It's fun to help others out of a jam, or kill an enemy player once in a while. WoW itself is very lame in the area of community goes, but the persistant world made it better for me.

I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with version 2. WoW is old news for most players now, and there is room for other good games. Lot's of people I know have already grown bored with WoW and have either left the game, or are actively trying other things. They always come back, only because there really is nothing new in this genre that is worth playing.

Especially considering how ludicrous it is for someone who plays video games, to poke fun at other people playing other video games.

I haven't bought a damn thing since buying WoW a year ago, so I will be picking this one up. I've been watching it for years like most of you and it's just one I have to play through in single player.

The important thing is, Quake Wars grows closer each passing day

wow is starting a loose a few people who are sick of the game. Lots of people burned through the expansion pack inside a week and will have to wait a year for another one. I think you will see more people trying other games. WoW won't suffer, but there may be room for LOTRO if it's fun.

CJ, what are you like 11 years old? Call people n00bs when you grow hair on that little nub of skin you call your balls, junior.

You did note that I said *I'm hoping* and *In the future* right? I do this stuff for a living, and I've been gaming online since there was an "online". I plan to support ANY organization that wants to move gaming out of the bullshit Windows OS arena. Until then, I will be forced to use XP/Vista with the rest of you poor bastards.

I'm with you, Cheese. I'm not leaving XP until I see that Vista is truly worth it. I'm already pissed about the DX10 bullshit, especially since there is no technical reason not to make it available under XP.

As a side note, all of this BS has really pushed me into looking at Linux and OSx. I installed Ubuntu on one of my laptops and I'm screwing around with Beryl and XGL right now. I'm also planning to remove windows from one of my PowerEdge servers at work and put Linux on it.

In the past I only messed around with Linux until I got bored with it. Now I'm serious about making it a regular part of my life, and relying on Windows only when needed. I'm hoping I can have a good Apple or Linux gaming machine in the future, and Windows will be demoted to my secondary computer instead of my primary. Microsoft is something I HAVE to deal with for now, but I'm looking for a way out.

This is an especially big deal for me because I've been a Windows Network Admin since like '92 and always enjoyed it until now.

I assume you have played WoW. Do you think they are hitting the nail on the head, for the most part, with gameplay in LOTRO?

WoW is so damned polished. It will take a lot to steal people away.

I use wireless on my laptop to play this sometimes and I have no problem at all, sub 60ms pings. I'm only using WEP security though, because my wireless is only on when I'm using it. If you are using one of the better encryptions and/or 128bit, your ping will go up on cheap home routers like Linksys.
