News Comments > 7 Days to Die Announced
15. Re: 7 Days to Die Announced May 17, 2013, 17:06 Kosh401

Interesting, I'll keep an eye on it.

FYI there's a DayZ-themed Minecraft mod called MineZ for those of you who might be interested. I never got around to checking it out myself though, so no promises

News Comments > Star Wars Focused DICE Studio Coming
36. Re: Star Wars Focused DICE Studio Coming May 15, 2013, 16:15 Kosh401

Yeah, LA DICE is just EA's marketing and branding machine at work.

If it was the DICE team in Sweden doing it then I might be excited and even hopeful. But then again, I enjoy BF3 a lot and wouldn't want BF4 and DLC suffering from split dev attention.

Will definitely be a wait and see reviews type of thing for whatever LA DICE releases.

News Comments > "Strong Possibility" Relic to Make Dawn of War 3
17. Re: Apr 23, 2013, 20:34 Kosh401

Agreed on going back to more of a DoW 1 game, I skipped DoW 2 after trying the beta or demo (forget which it was).

Since Relic won't be doing the next Homeworld, I'm not really surprised by timing of Duffy's comments about HOPING to do DoW 3. And I think they are the right choice for it, so hopefully it works out that way.

News Comments > Gearbox Snags Homeworld IP
53. Re: Gearbox Snags Homeworld IP Apr 22, 2013, 19:19 Kosh401

Well, that's definitely not great news. Recent-ish release issues aside, I also don't relate Gearbox to detailed and quality RTS games. I'll be keeping an eye out for news/info, but not going to get my hopes up now.

If only SEGA/Relic has acquired it for Relic to develop. Man, that would have been nice.

As others mentioned, I could be convinced to buy a reasonably priced HD makeover at least.

EDIT: I took that "leading digital platforms" comment to mean Steam, Origin, etc.; platforms for distributing games.... that's pretty disturbing if they would actually try to put Homeworld on consoles O_o

News Comments > Company of Heroes 2 Closed Beta Open to Facebook Affection
13. Re: Company of Heroes 2 Closed Beta Open to Facebook Affection Apr 15, 2013, 16:53 Kosh401

My friend and I have put a lot of hours into this beta and we're both on AMD cards and haven't had a single crash, aside from one time a replay crashed on me when I loaded it.

This definitely is more of a marketing move so I would put it more on SEGA than Relic for giving out keys this way.

Either way, it's more than worth it. We've had a lot of really good matches so far. I think the extra dev time they've had with it internally during the THQ sale and SEGA being brought up to speed has really helped things a lot.

Also FYI: the Steam Digital Collector's Edition is apparently being re-upped this week after it was pulled during the SEGA takeover. Will be interesting to see what's in it now and whether or not it's worth keeping or downgrading from.

CoH 2 is suppose to have the new SEGA-ized Digital Collector's Edition back up on Steam this week. Will be interesting how it compares to the THQ one that was taken down.

9. Re: New Jagged Alliance Coming Apr 11, 2013, 18:50 Kosh401

I didn't mind JA2 after that last big patch that added sector inventory. Before that I found it too tedious.

I know zombies are done to death (har) but I was on a DayZ kick at the time and remember thinking a zombie survival game could be cool with the JA2 engine (inventory, group systems, etc). Too bad it was so un-moddable :/

News Comments > Battlefield 4 Trailer Tease
43. Re: Battlefield 4 Trailer Tease Mar 19, 2013, 22:34 Kosh401

I've really enjoyed BF3. A few things I want to see for BF4:

- Dynamic weather (rain as per the teaser pic, mud causing vehicle tracking problems, etc)
- No blue tint
- VOIP
- BATTLE RECORDER - this is huge for me. So many epic moments lost because DXstory isn't running :/ Even from a marketing point of view, I don't see how DICE/EA wouldn't push to have this in BF3, better be there for BF4.

I've come across a few hackers in my 200+ hours in BF3 obviously, but if you play on servers with active admins over the age of 10 they generally aren't a problem.

Looking forward to some details, next gen consoles might actually "help" (or hurt less) BF4 on the PC.

50. Re: Ships Ahoy - StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm Mar 12, 2013, 16:31 Kosh401

Skipping this one. Wings of Liberty was alright and I'd like to see how the campaign continues, but I'm just not feeling it for Blizz products after Diablo 3.

Also, Company of Heroes 2 is is coming in June (or July? forget which one is the new announced release date) so that will be my next major RTS fix anyway, and probably with the beta sooner (assuming SEGA is still doing that for preorders).

News Comments > Evening Q&As
16. Re: Evening Q&As Mar 2, 2013, 08:40 Kosh401

100% of the game's simulation is done on a single CPU thread. Some audio and rendering is offloaded to a second core/thread, but otherwise it's all done on one.

That is the reason there is such a small city limit to work within. I wouldn't expect to see this increased any time soon, as they essentially would have to re-write large parts of their game engine (the simulators) to support multithreading.

Why it wasn't built this way to begin with is beyond me. It's the perfect type of game for multithreading.

4. Re: DayZ Update Feb 16, 2013, 17:57 Kosh401

Rocket/Dean has said on Reddit he's hoping for free content updates along the lines of how content was added freely to Minecraft. Specifically just this week, he also said he hoped the Standalone sells so well that literally everything will be free for the lifetime of the game (I took this to mean heavy development stuff, like the underground shelters, new maps, etc.).

We'll see, either way I can't wait to give this a go. It'll be worth the price of admission.

News Comments > SimCity Closed Beta 2 Next Weekend
18. Re: SimCity Closed Beta 2 Next Weekend Feb 9, 2013, 19:48 Kosh401

If it wasn't for the ridiculously tiny city sizes I would probably check it out. I like how pretty much everything is actually a real time simulation now.

The face palm no buy moment for me when was I read that the game runs EVERYTHING on a single CPU core (with the exception of 'audio and rendering' that can be offloaded onto another thread). I couldn't believe it when I read that, who releases a game like this in 2013 and doesn't make it multithread-friendly?! Any RTS screams for a quad core, so one would think a heavy simulator like this would be a no brainer...?!

Really shot down my hopes for an increase in city sizes any time soon.

49. Re: SimCity: Details on Player Region Limits and Color-Blindness Mode Jan 26, 2013, 11:36 Kosh401

The map size is a joke, and so is the marketing speak that they are the 'same size' as medium cities in SC4. Maybe by some barely technically correct standard, but definitely not in practice. You had way more space to work with in SC4 Medium cities than you do here. Everything relative and scaling, etc.

Also, beta is still inaccessible this morning due to server load. Ha.

Outstanding cinematic. I'd pay to see a full movie. Can't say the same about SC2 Heart of the Swarm, though; it might be my first pass on a Blizzard game, especially with Company of Heroes 2 coming up for my RTS fix.

4. Re: Steam Top 10 Jan 13, 2013, 14:06 Kosh401

I think ARMA is going to remain very niched among gamers because the vast majority of ARMA II sales at this point are to gain access to the free DayZ mod.

The ARMA brand recognition is unarguably much higher than ever before as a result of DayZ and that will probably help ARMA III's sales to some degree. Also assuming there is at least a small portion of DayZ players that tried out AND enjoyed ARMA II itself, it should be good for the franchise. However, many DayZ players give the ARMA II engine a shit-kicking over its unfriendly UI and mechanics. So it remains to be seen how it all plays out for ARMA III.

Once the DayZ standalone is out, I expect it to be in Steam's top 10 and ARMA II will completely drop out from it. Even this could be good for ARMA though, as it will keep Bohemia well funded.

News Comments > On Standalone DayZ DelayZ
6. Re: On Standalone DayZ DelayZ Jan 7, 2013, 18:40 Kosh401

Hm strange, I haven't noticed any odd mouse behaviour in DayZ.

I'm fine with them taking their time and getting it right, and especially launching with a more updated/new Standalone rather than just a repackaged mod for sale.

I understand they want to release for cheap and keep adding to it over time ala minecraft, but IMO that starting package has to be a big enough step up from the mod to be worth the price again (as many of us bought Arma II to be able to play the mod, which yes is free - still you get the point).

I think the extra dev time is also a good idea given the WarZ fiasco.

Of most importance to me is what happens to Relic and Company of Heroes! And the Homeworld IP, which THQ reacquired a while ago (the series was developed by Relic, before THQ bought them).

EDIT:

"The companys foreign operations, including Canada, are not included in the filings."

Looks like Relic isn't included (for now, at least) as they are a Canadian company.
