Gamespy isn't going anywhere anytime soon.
Sounds like they could have been more prudent about how they go about shutting down services though, I doubt we know the whole story. |

Still, not that it matters a single fuck whether you play a game on 60 or 80 or 120. Not even if you're in an FPS clan either. Been there done that. To me, at least, 60 fps is 100% smooth gameplay. You couldn't be more wrong about how much it matters, specifically in competitions. |

Most people don't even know what resolutions their LCD/LED monitor can do greater than 60hz. Even if the app did an amazing job, a solid percentage of performance comes from tweaks to the game ini's, especially if they are built upon common engines.
I only care about 'bells and whistles' on single player RPG's. It's all about performance for FPS's. I wont touch a multi shooter unless I can get a minimum of 80 fps (with a monitor resolution that supports it), and a minimum of 90 FOV.
I prioritized performance way back, everyone who clanned did -- so it's a matter of seconds to get my games exactly how I want them. |

The software lineup of games was so weak, I'm surprised it sold so well despite. There's not a single game I'm interested in getting for my kids, we only bought it for the Miiverse and future games.
The only mario game they ever played was Party ans Smash Bros. The 'Mario' name is not strong in our house... we just like the tech. |

I never defended Nintendo. Where did you see me say anything about me backing nintendo?
I was very specific. 1. I said you guys didn't read the article based on the replies. 2. I said Kyle omitted the obvious parts. 3. I said you guys didn't read the faq. 4. I proved it all with the quote from the FAQ, which nullifies most arguments and sensationalism. 5. I said it's no big deal.
Now if you guys think its a BIG DEAL and want to burn down your perceived Frankenstein because Kyle says so, by all means cry all you want, grab the pitchforks! |

Its obvious most of you read headlines, possibly do a a quick F pattern on the actual article, and then just throw up opinions that you think others might agree with.
Kyle quotes one sentence from Nintendo's faq, creates a future theory in his own mind, then spends the rest of his article living in the past problems comparing it to his made-up theory of how it's going to work in the future.
Anyone bother to read the FAQ he's quoting from? Here's the rest of the quote:
"In the future, you will be able to use your Nintendo Network Account with future Nintendo consoles and other devices, such as PC's."
If you actually read the entire FAQ, you'll see they are obviously going to refine it, but putting in restrictions to the network account right now. Maybe it will be a netflix type of thing, where you'll 'register' a console somewhere and be able to download and play your games, or download the media to a PC to use on other consoles, who knows but they obviously stated changes will come regarding the current way it works.
Some DRM complaints are warranted, I get it. But in this day and age it's just not a big deal, at least for the large majority of people who buy Wii's. Most prefer to buy the media anyway, so it's completely irrelevant in that case. |

They went full Steamworks on a few games that had online play. Space Marine, Saints Row 2 & 3, and Homefront come to mind... still didn't really help them make anything into the super-blockbuster they needed to stay alive. Their games and marketing needed to be better, and while I hate GFWL as much as the next guy, avoiding those libraries wouldn't have saved the company. They absolutely would have been saved, I'm sure of it. They were too late as I mentioned, new games were meh at best, stigma attached.
The best games they had to build a community on would have been easily Warhammer - I mean that brick and mortar community is rabid they wouldda jumped all in. Red Faction would easily would have competed with any 'average' active community for FPS's. Hell Supreme commander came out at a perfect time to suck in all the starcraft junkies. Metro? maybe, game was different. Doesnt matter GFWL killed it, anyone getting the bundle won't be playing it multi anytime soon.
I could go on THQ had some killer IP's in their pocket, some great innovation in their games, but the worst back seat driver they could ever have expected. GFWL drove them in to the lake, and all by their own free will. |

I feel for them. It's their hail mary but unfortunately they're just too deep in default to pull out.
They made some bad decisions, but their worst was teaming up with Microsoft to use their incredibly shit GFWL.
No active multi in multi-heavy genres? Your game gets forgotten almost immediately. Biggest case in point is Red Faction series, with the best world destruction far before it's time, great inventive multiplayer modes, easy to mod, all the things communities are built with - no one gave a shit cause it was GFWL hurdles left and right, big pain in the ass.
And look at the DoW series, really incredible stuff, no shits given. DOWII was just too late on that trigger to put GFWL down.
GFWL was the real death sentence. Not exactly something you can put a finger on, but my finger sure feels it.

The game sure didn't sell nearly as well as you would think with all the hype the game was getting though. People declaring it the death of the subscription mmo but it looks like ones without one aren't that much more popular. It sold over 5 million copies already and has a pretty stable ongoing revenue stream in the shop. If that's not a success I don't know what is. Publishers always lay off post release. It's not the second coming of WOW and was never intended to be. The player base tends to rise and fall with major releases of other games, its been a busy year.

The writing was on the walls with the Mytheon beta, we knew quite obviously they were not the same petroglyph - a bunch of douches actually minus a few lip service forum guys, and their lack of success afterwards is no surprise.
Petroglyph needed to reorder from the top down -- the lead devs are so full of themselves, make piss-poor decisions, and don't listen.
I'm surprised they were able to make a dime since then, they likely haven't. |
