News Comments > FCC Reinstates Net Neutrality; Unfetters Local Broadband
9. Re: FCC Reinstates Net Neutrality; Unfetters Local Broadband Feb 26, 2015, 19:08 mellis

I can't understand why anyone in America (who wasn't an executive or shareholder at an ISP) wouldn't be overjoyed by this ruling? I mean, in the States you frequently have little or no choice in your ISP and - worse still - absolutely no meaningful recourse when things go wrong or just outright suck.

You can vote out your government and hold them accountable for their actions, the same cannot be said for an ISP's unilateral executive decisions...

There is nothing inherently wrong with the use of CGI, but it should be unobtrusive. Check out Blue Bolts work in Game of Thrones for example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uhG1i_BobWY

The problem is directors nowadays overuse it - entire films can be filmed on a green screen and therein lies the problem. When an actor is facing down a CGI 'giant robot x' or engaged in 'high-speed jet bike chase' etc, it's impossible for an actor to convey those subtle cues that humans pick-up on because it's not really happening to them and on some deeper level we, the audience, can tell.

In days gone by, those hints were conveyed because some set designer had actually built a life-size replica of the monster and when the scene was filmed, the actor / actress was actually facing it down. I mean, take Signory Weaver in Aliens 2 at the end where she's facing down the queen in the nest. That was a real model, and it must have been pretty frightening when the animatronics crews were operating it, even thought it wasn't real.

I'm pretty sure everybody agrees the original storyline plus Mask of the Betrayer was the best single-player experience.

The original story? Not great - way too many repetitive environments and reuse of assets. Mask of the Betrayer on the other hand - up there with Baldurs Gate: Shadows of Amn - one of the single best (and most surprising) RPG's I've ever played. Varied, handcrafted environments, awesome situations (the cackling witch in the puzzle dungeon springs to mind) and a great storyline.

Got to have this - real shame Cataclysm isn't in there - such an awesome addition in the series.

It's odd, but the monster artwork in Evolve looks like it was lifted straight from Shiny's Giants: Citizen Kabuto

Compare Evolve to Giants: Citizen Kabuto - uncanny?

Yet more of these blasted cinematics that give no indication of what the actual game is like.

It looks pretty damn nice - although I don't see any gibbing or children, which is somewhat disappointing. If you're going to plow the bottom of the barrel, might as well go all the way...

The problem is you know that in reality, Valve probably doesn't give two hoots about this game.

Their reaction is based purely on what they perceive the reputational damage will be if they do sell it. I mean it's like Christmas come early for the Fox New's (US) and Daily Mails (UK's) of this world.

Value will get characterized as supporting baby killers and psychopaths and some misguided, publicity grabbing politician will single them out while demanding draconian laws to "protect the innocence of today's youth".

Doubtless some mass killings will get attributed to the game (regardless of timelines), speculation about the development teams political affiliations will be portrayed as fact and the whole sorry episode framed as an assault on Western freedoms and ideals.

If you were Value/Unreal/Good Old Games etc, what would you do?

Shame really that such censorship exists. If they replaced 'people' with 'zombies' - no one would bat an eyelid.

From a purely aesthetic perspective, it looks like a pretty well made game, well animated, nice looking environments and some pretty cool finishing moves.

It's a shame that there it's always a case of "yeah - free speech, but you can't make a game about that"

I suspect they're trying to avoid the EA route of getting a class action lawsuit (BF4 last fall). Not that the lawsuit hurt them, but it did get their shareholders attention.

You can bet they're not giving away AAA $60 titles out of the kindness of their hearts.

They're not based in America, so class action isn't really a big concern for them. Litigating a French company would be expensive. It really does look like a genuine gesture to make things right. Can't fault them for that, even if Assassins Creed Unity will still be a bag of crap, patched or not.

2. Re: Assassin's Creed unity Patch Three This Week Nov 26, 2014, 06:14 mellis

Might fix the technical issues, can't fix the lack of "fun" though.

Story is an awful disjointed mess, the side-quest missions are formulaic (go here, kill this, FedEx that) and the 'historical characters' are pointless. The best personalities (Like the Marquis De Sade) are underused and ironically the trailer for this game (like a bad movie) contains all the best bits.

Compared to Black Flag, the game itself is a turd which is impressive since the credits take about 35 minutes to roll through on 'normal' speed.

Again, they would have known this LONG ago. They didn't make the decision to switch to a "the server does everything" model in the past few months. They made that decision basically all the way back in the beginning. Had they made the announcement then, it would have been quite a different story from them making it exactly one month before release.

The reason they've done it should be fairly obvious. There isn't actually much in the way of in-game content. This isn't diametrically opposed to what was in the original Elite, but things have moved on.

The fact is, a space game like Elite will get very tiring very quickly without a huge amount of content continuous and/or truly dynamic events. And nothing is quite as dynamic as a human interaction.

Since there is no campaign (the only goal being to get a bigger ship to haul more cargo around), they're basically trying to avoid Elite becoming like others that have foisted the offline space experience (See Independence War 2, Freelancer etc) - mildly interesting for a week in campaign mode and then...forgotten.

Of course online means they'll be moving towards a micro-transaction or subscription model at some point most likely, but if it's successful as Eve has been for its publisher, they can make all the cool things that realize space (Planet landings, walking around etc). All of this costs money, time and resources and it simply cannot be justified if no one is even playing your game after a month.

Frankly, of all the space games that would make sense to be "Online only" - Elite is probably at the front of the queue; an awesome flight model with human interactions and a conduit for retaining interest to allow greater expansion.

Granted though; the PR was handled badly but the reasoning seems sound.

I wonder if behind the scenes, Facebook has waved the wallet at them... Seems like it's the killer app for Oculus, and if they keep working on Elite after release by going after a better "Eve" - potentially a massive money spinner in its own right.
