Flatline wrote on Oct 20, 2014, 13:01:
Not only is disparaging someone for not being a true gamer because they started when Halo came out a No True Scotsman fallacy, but it's especially lazy because as it turns out, Halo is pretty fucking old. You might as well push the threshold back into the 70's with THAC0, or even into the late 60's with the Grognard/wargame crowd that probably first popularized the term "gamer" in a social context outside of gambling.

Point taken -- bad choice of words on my part. (Maybe I should have said Farmville instead?)

To clarify, I was commenting on the way the "controversy", such as it is, has entered the consciousness of people who aren't involved in it, have nothing to do with it, aren't affected by it at all, and probably have more important things to worry about. Especially when said controversy is ultimately just a bunch of (presumably young and unwise) people typing stuff on their keyboards -- it's alternately silly and sad.

More maddening than anything else is the way it's moved into the mainstream, as if it's somehow bigger than a bunch of nerds circle jerking on their internet drama. I'm seeing posts in my Facebook feed from people whose gaming experience probably started with Halo saying things like, "I'm a gamer and I'm shocked and ashamed by all this. ASHAMED."

This kid who probably never had a breakup before? Sarkeesian? (Why is she even involved in this in the first place??) In the larger picture of the industry? NONE OF THESE PEOPLE MATTER.

More like COD With Jetpacks (ala Titanfall) than Quake, I would say. Gunplay still looks like a floor-level skill cap hitscan fest.

Enh. It'll be back once the movie blows over and Marvel's no longer at risk of promoting a film that competes against Avengers 2.

Marvel's been doing this kind of thing for a while now, "ending" and then re-starting series. Captain America, Spider Man, the various Avengers and X-Men groups, and Fantastic Four itself have each had like 3 or 4 #1's in the past 10 years.

I don't think it's specifically the emulators that Apple is going after here...

Because it's 1v4. Which is about as fun as it sounds.

Might as well just tell people to play Shootmania...

None of this solves the actual issue which is that the people who play it (Quake) have 15 years of experience behind them and will pretty much mop the floor with anyone who doesn't.

Always been a little baffled by World of Tanks' apparent success. Doesn't seem like the kind of thing that would have any kind of mass appeal.

I liked driving around at night while listening to Ninja Tune Radio. Some rather nice atmosphere.

I could never get past the idea of Korea taking over all of Asia and China being perfectly fine with it.

Hope they do something more interesting with the story this time around than trot out every single military occupation cliche.

You need to be a licensee to get access to the code and contribute to it, so if you want to contribute you're effectively... paying to build and market product that Epic makes money off of.

Good on them for the spin, but this is really just Make Something Unreal, repackaged.

I remember thinking that they'd recycled a bunch of unused concepts and assets from Wolfenstein for this.

Raven shooters frustrate me, because they're always completely solid mechanically, but marred by linear level design and unsophisticated storytelling. This is worth playing, though, just to experience the high concept -- and then wonder what might have been, afterwards.

COD style zero depth gunplay made it boring pretty quickly. Riding enemy mechs is kind of fun though.

I'm always happy to see Twitch being vigilant towards keeping their content appropriate. It's frustrating when the ex/wannabe porn stars show up looking for a free alternative to Streamate.

No problem with boobs at all, but this isn't the place for it.

Who exactly is the target demographic for this? No way it'll be priced within the console range.

The Alienware crowd maybe?

These 80's style "documentaries" are fun to watch, but I was rather disappointed that the previous two weren't relevant to how the story unfolded. Would have been interesting to explore how Columbia's existence affected history.

I directed my money to Humble Bundle themselves. I'm rather suspicious of how charity funds actually allocate their money.

Really happy to have picked up the Dead Spaces and Mirror's Edge -- they'd been on my list for a while but I never had the chance to pick them up.

Love how they're applying the ideas that the ending of Infinite revealed. Always a man, always a city...

Fired up Bioshock 1 a few weeks ago for the first time since upgrading my hardware. My god is it gorgeous.
