People will always find a reason other than blaming parents. Banning things is easy, teaching people to not be complete fuckups at parenting is much harder. Just like with an individual it is much easier for society to just be a slacker instead of fixing faults. Toy guns, movies, cartoons, music, dryer lint, the Moon being in alignment with Jupiter, etc. Pick a decade and they all had their turn at being the bad guy.

Damn you dryer lint!

In my limited personal experience I've found casuals seem to enjoy it and techies hate it.

I've also found casuals can't find everything they look for and call the techie for help. The casuals don't seem to mind that everything's been moved around because hey, pretty colors. We'll just call Steve!

The techies meanwhile hate MS for hiding all the cheese and increasing their friends and family tech support calls.

I'm on the techie side.

Again, my experience does not a statistic make.

Yep. From what I've read, the new Start button just takes you back to tabletville.

Penny Arcade sums up my feelings on that sufficiently.

It didn't have to be this way. They could have included a classic interface option like previous versions had. They could have had a far, far better tutorial for the new UI. They could have recognized that pissing off a large chunk of your userbase in order to try and trojan horse people into using your pads and phones is not a good idea. Too late.

I think his failure can be summed up quite simply. When he took over Microsoft it was the king of the tech world. Under his watch other companies came in and took it from them damn near uncontested. Its like the race is over and they're stuck at the starting line because they didn't hear the gun go off. Financially they're still quite healthy but mostly due to legacy divisions that existed before Ballmer took over. As the top of the food chain ultimately the buck has to stop with him. Arrogant, terrible marketing, slow to respond and utterly unable to predict the changes in the market.

"Microsoft shares shot up eight per cent in morning trading following the news."

You know you're bad when just announcing retirement improves the value of your company. If he announced he would exile himself to a remote island they might just crack 10%. Just food for thought Mr Ballmer.

Have they specified anywhere the PC version will be based on the next gen console version instead of the current gen?

Don't worry guys MS has you covered. If your PC won't boot they'll gladly sell you a Surface RT to replace it.

Last time I played Amnesia it was with the lights turned off and headphones on. I had to stop the game at one point my heart was racing. Haven't gone back to it yet because of backlog but no game has ever done that to me. If the guy ever backports to the Oculus Rift he may need to include heart attack warnings like big rollercoasters do.

Would someone be so kind as to explain to me what's wrong with STEAM(-only release)? Never having any issues with STEAM. It's my cosy little digital game library. <3

Matter of fact, if a game is NOT released on STEAM there's a huge chance I won't buy it, these days.

Some people like DRM free games. Others like to see competition. I too like Steam but that doesn't mean I want it to monopolize the market.

The most idiotic financial move of the decade? I recognise that GFWL sucks and I'm happy they're making moves to contain it, but the ramifications of this decision seem inconceivable.

If sales are low enough then the costs of maintaining the platform make it economically sound to shut it down. Given how despised GFWL is it seems like the only correct move to me. There's no way its even remotely close to the idiotic financial move of the decade, there are far bigger blunders in MS's history like Surface RT and Vista.

Imagine what could happen if the time and energy put towards comparing the worst of the two parties (who have 90% identical policies anyways) went instead toward supporting the few people on each side trying to undo the mess and aren't currently getting the support they need?

So what are the games that won't be available any longer? Just browsing through that store, seems everything is on Steam anyway.

BUT, before you celebrate too much, this doesn't mean GFWL as an online service and DRM scheme is going away... It's just the store, which nobody used. Even the desktop client will still be around so that people can access stuff they already have, just without an option to buy anything new. So this is the exact same situation as a few years back, before they launched the marketplace portion.

There's some evidence GFWL is being patched out of Bioshock 2 and Arkham City. I doubt all publishers will go back and patch it out but its a potentially good sign.
