Smart TVs, smart fridges, smart washing machines? Disaster waiting to happen.

Read this yesterday, and kind of agree. Who really needs an internet ready fridge anyway?

One comment on there summed it up for me, it's a solution waiting for a problem. There are some occasional uses I can see like checking what's in the fridge on you're smartphone while your shopping, and maybe the ability to turn off a stove/appliance remotely in case you forget. But imo the security and potential privacy tradeoff isn't worth it.

You mean Freedom Cry? Or was there another one?

If that's the one he's talking about I finished playing through that DLC on my PC last week already. Really enjoyed it too. Killing slavers is always fun.

How many times must it be drummed into people's heads that just because it's published on the Internet does not mean that it is true, or even rational, for goodness' sake.

By your logic we should ignore you. Good protip.

I can see this being abused by shady salesmen.

Speak not this blasphemy. When Lucas made Ep 1, the Gungans lived in an aquatic zone, and it turned out just fine. Even when they had to traverse the planet core.

Did you not attend the meeting where we all agreed Episode 1 never happened?

Nope never heard of it.

I can't fault him much for not shipping any software. Lucasarts was a place where ideas go to die, and Valve's evolved into the weird company that produces digital hats and now hardware.

I have a hard time believing a phones are going to be "more powerful" than the last gen consoles.

It'll happen easily. My 2013 smartphone has 4X the Ram of the previous console gen already. The PS3 launched 7 years ago, plenty of time to die shrink equivalent or superior horsepower into a mobile. The only real problem is going to continue to be battery life.

At the time the original Forbes article was published, Order of War was not on Steam, period. So unless people went back to the article, they would not have seen the update. And Techie didn't link to the article, that I can see, he just referenced it.

Order of War:Challenge was removed from Steam because that's the online expansion that was shut down. Order of War was still available.

And you are correct I mistakenly said he linked to it, brain fart on my end.

To put a cap on the subject can we all agree the real problem here was the terrible idea of mandatory online singleplayer? That's what ultimately caused all this to happen.

Say that to the owners of "Order of war" that Steam removed from the owners library...Granted it was a crap game that nobody really played but still.

That didn't happen. Read the Forbes article you linked all the way to the end, they made a mistake and made a correction at the bottom. The game is still available on Steam.

That's what I've been saying for ages. This whole move from physical to digital where you dont own anything but rather are loaned a license which can be taken away at whim is one of the worst things to happen to gaming in recent years. Convenience is great, but at what cost?

Noone is "losing their games". These titles are being taken off the market, anyone who purchased them is still free to play them.

Yet if you own Fallout on Steam you do not even need Steam running to play the game. There is no DRM on it.

If you're going to consider digital distribution as DRM, then you might as well call the entire need to have a PC as DRM.

Same goes for GalCiv2.

There is no need to SteamDRM any single player, offline file. Yet Gabe Newell, Best Friend of Gaming™, is quite intent on making sure that happens.

This is assuming that had Steam NOT taken off and had PC gaming NOT severely dwindled (or outright died) without it that devs wouldn't be pushing their own activation scheme instead. Like they do already anyways. Aka Uplay, Origin, GFWL, Securom, Starforce, etc. Hell with that last one it even fucked up optical writers it was so bad. The death of physical media on the PC and the desires of publishers brought online DRM, not Gabe.

I refuse to play games that require services like Steam. Tell why do I need to have additional software installed just to play? That is so fu***ng wrong!

The potential alternative we were facing when Steam first came out was NO games to play if you may remember.
