| Yep, they're still trying to coast on their past accolades, but it should speak volumes that they needed to start their own free-to-play publishing company to get their new games out... I guess id and now Bethesda don't want anything to do with them anymore. |

| Christ, a new beta driver every damn week during the holiday releases... When are they going to implement automatic updating, so we don't have to download a new package every time? |

I just got in last weekend, and I think it's really cool. The combat is tight and virtually lag-free, and the presentation of the sprawling open world environment is just jaw-dropping. You can see for MILES in the daytime and at night it gets dark enough that you'll need to use the flashlight, which completely flips it the other way. It will really stress your hardware if you want to max it out, and an SSD is all but required for the highest-res textures because of the amount of streaming going on.
There's not a whole lot of story content in right now, so if you're just running around solo I can see how you might get bored. PVE is a lot of random events, territory control against AI troops, and thumping, i.e. resource gathering, which is mostly all best done in groups. I've not tried out the PVP yet, but that is a huge part of this game and they're spending a lot of time tweaking and balancing the classes to make that work well.
I like how there's no leveling up, per se, you just earn XP and spend it on new tech. It takes a while to progress to the best stuff, and then you start crafting your own upgrade parts to squeeze every last drop of performance out of your suit. Another cool thing is that, if you want to play a different class, you just buy that suit. Experience doesn't carry over, though, you can only spend on upgrading each one what you've earned while wearing it. Making the switch to Tier 2 is kind of a pain right now, though... Usually you end up weaker than your supposedly inferior, but then fully-upgraded, previous equip.
As for the extended beta period, it's because they're actually in beta. It's not free promotion or a demo for early adopters, while they use the 'Beta' moniker to cover their ass against complaints. They're still very much in development, taking any and all feedback to heart. As recently as 6 months ago, they completely overhauled major systems of the game, including character progression (they used to have traditional leveling). In that sense, it's really not very fair to get yourself in there, spend half an hour not knowing what you're doing, and saying the final game will suck...

| I think now I know how Europe feels when NA gets the games a few days to a week earlier... I have it pre-ordered (free with that SSD, which is awesome BTW), but that leaked release is looking mighty tempting. Not sure I can last 6 more days! |

The ONLY reason we even know about this game is because they're promising the moon and stars while piggy-backing on the popularity of DayZ. Despite their vehement claims to the contrary, this game did not exist at the beginning of 2012; It's basically just a reskin of The War Inc., their previous online FPS, with zombies and various other stolen ideas thrown in to create an illusion of depth. I don't know how anyone could think this would be any better than that third-rate garbage... The fact that they were charging $25-40 for people to be the first to play this thing should have raised some red flags, but I keep hearing about people being burned by it. A fool and his money, I suppose.
What happens is you log in, hit a server browser, pick a non full 40 man server. You then set about trying to play the game you think you are getting based on their advertising and instead it turns out to be an all out fragfest of players just killing one another. LMAO. The first thing I see every moron say about how The War Z is better than DayZ, is that it's a "true MMO" with hundreds of players in a game at once. If what you say is correct, it's just another example of them flat-out lying with their marketing. |

| How would a string of drop assassinations be "defying gravity," exactly? Isn't the point of those kills that you're using gravity to easily deliver lethal blows? |

| They were working on it before, trying to make the whole skyrail thing work in a deathmatch setting for consoles. AFAIK they spent a lot of time and money on that, but just couldn't be satisfied with it, and then whatever other problems they've had in development finally put the nail in its coffin. You bet your ass 2K wanted multiplayer in this... they don't care if it sucked in BioShock 2, it was an extra selling point for them that brought in at least some players that may not have been interested otherwise, plus it's easy to churn out little maps for DLC. |

| I don't know what Ken means by "that kid is persistent," but he is NOT the one who said "thank sweet baby jesus no multi." That's a quote from someone else, just like he's quoting questions from people in the other tweets... So the exact reason they don't have multiplayer he's referring to, is all the people who DON'T want it. |

Well, Dishonored is a Steamworks game, so no matter where you buy it, it activates there, and the gameplay stats are tracked. The public stats previously linked aren't perfect, as they show only concurrent players and not the total, but they do give you a pretty good comparison as to a game's popularity compared to that of others.
Being a single-player game with relatively little replay value, Dishonored was at its peak the day it came out, and is now a bit below 1/4 of its all-time record (which was about 20k, barely putting it on the top 10 IIRC). Of course, the numbers this week take into account a resurgence of players brought on by massive discount and new sales, so even that is a bit of a peak lately...
For comparison, Assassin's Creed 3, which is not a Steamworks game, and so the stats don't reflect that entire playerbase, peaked this weekend at about 15k. |

| They've actually been crowdfunding this since long before doing so became the fad it is now. They did the whole getting rejected by publishers and turning to the fans thing a few years ago. I put in my $35 back then because I think its an awesome concept, but they dropped the ball on this KS campaign for sure. Don't do a little stopgap project, figure out what you need to finish the real deal and let people fund that... |

/not CoD related but awesome anyways =) It complained when I tried to d/l it. Restarting steam fixed it as usual. If they spend a little more time polishing the GUI and fixing it so I wouldn't have to restart for things like that, it would be less annoying.
Also, valve, where's the paid content for the game? I'd rather buy it all through steam if I end up buying some. It's an MMO; they may have special package deals on Steam, but they never have their entire cash shop there. No doubt they'd prefer you give them all your money to buy virtual currency, then spend that on things. |

| Paid $22 for the Season Pass... Turns out the first DLC would have been worth paying the full $10 for (IMO), so even if the rest suck, they're only $4 each. Even if it was "just an arena" (it's not), the Torgue campaign would still be worth at least that much. |

Bricking? That's what the 3-year warranty is for... They'll iron out the bugs long before that runs out. And keep backups of your important data if you're worried about losing stuff, which you should be doing anyway. In fact, you're really not supposed to use an SSD for static storage. Having a 1TB+ standard HDD for all your music, movies, photos, and seldom-played or non-disk-intensive games is common practice.
TurdFergasun wrote on Nov 19, 2012, 18:59: besides the potential bricking issues, there is the fact that the 840's write speed is significantly slower than the 830's. read speeds are similar. The write speed point doesn't mean much unless you have multiple SSDs and/or an absolute bleeding edge machine with ONLY USB 3.0 and SATA III devices... The 840's 240MB/sec write is still way faster than your internet downloads, gigabit network traffic, and the vast majority of transfers from USB, optical storage disks, hard disk drives, etc. The sequential read speed is usually more important, and some would argue the fact that the 840 has better random read speed and almost double random write compared to the 830 is a big advantage in everyday use (i.e. not copying large amounts of data).
And let's not forget about the pricing, here, which is the whole reason for this post. It's a great deal if you were planning on buying Far Cry 3 anyway. If I'm paying less than 50 cents a gigabyte for an SSD that has a rather small performance difference compared to one that will cost [effectively] 50% more, sheeit... Sign me up!

Prez wrote on Nov 19, 2012, 18:27: I'm not getting why people are still considering a PC version inevitable after reading that interview - terminal optimism maybe? It's not like dude has a reason to be coy, not with the insane success of GTA on consoles. I understand that all other version made it to PC, but like they say on all those investment commercials 'past performance is NOT a guarantee of future results.' Yet again, they do have reasons... Millions of little green ones, in fact. Console exclusivity is a thing, it has been Rockstar's thing for a decade. At least as far as Grand Theft Auto is concerned. They NEVER officially confirm a PC version until MONTHS after the console release. (Ex: GTA IV came out in April '08, no PC announcement until August, then it released in December.) Until then, you get PR people talking like politicians, because their hands are tied.
Hell, if you go back to GTA III, the Xbox version was initially in the same boat as PC -- to be released six months later -- but Sony paid them (Take-Two) to extend that and have it all to themselves for two full years. It did wonders for them, then, so it's easy to understand why they still do it today, with every major release. Only difference is now Microsoft coughs up enough dough to match, so only PC, with no single giant corporation to watch over its interests, is left out in the cold.
What is it you are unable to understand about this situation? I'm asking honestly... |
