The problem with VR setups like this is until you get some sort of unidirectional walking surface under your feet, the level of "reality" you feel will still be diminished. I know because I went through this when I bought my VFX-1 helmet. Even playing in a standing position and using a peripheral to control movement is still wonky and doesn't lend itself to the experience. It doesn't matter how good the headtracking, graphics or 3D effects are, nor how much they increase your field of vision. It won't lend itself well to FPS's, etc, simply because your brain knows you aren't moving.

Now, where this product WILL do better is in games where the character is still and the world moves around you. In other words, flight and driving simulators. Being able to look around a virtual cockpit, glancing into your rear view and side view mirrors, etc. Unfortunately there will still be the lack of g-forces affecting your body, but the effect won't be nearly as pronounced as the movement problems in a FPS. Unless of course you've got your chair sitting in the center of a gyroscope, like a mini version of Star Tours or any similar motion rides. I found where the effect was the most pronounced was when I stood next to the edge of a cliff or chasm and peered over the side, as well as looking down out of the cockpit as you banked left or right. The you *really* felt it.

So ultimately this will still be a gimmick. A pretty gimmick, but a gimmick nonetheless.

People just arent going to walk around on a treadmill to move around in a 3d/vr "game". It's just not feasible in the long-term. For therapeutic purposes this could be an excellent application, or perhaps for less competitive/challenging role-playing type stuff..

More likely will be motion tracking devices like the kinect sensors to take care of that stuff with simple gestures. And if youre looking for force feedback in *any* way here, you better be prepared to pay "Star Tours" type prices for the hardware.

Maybe this time their PC port won't fucking require the textures to be stored in the video card's memory. I disabled that shit and set it on full and, despite the shitty performance pre-Nvidia patch, it ran exactly the fucking same with full detail.

Fucking schmucks.

I'm pretty sure you're talking about the graphics options only allowing you to use up to a certain % of your video card's memory, instead of using 1200mb worth of textures on a 512 mb card it restricted you. The command line argument disables that but if you want your shitty performance to look as good as possible I guess that was the only way at the time.

Most games try to dissuade you from cramming 1 gig of textures into 768 or 512 mb of graphics memory.. it's not a bad thing.

That being said I'm really glad I was a late adopter of GTA4 on pc because I heard a lot about the "out of the gate" performance.. or lack thereof.

I'm willing to bet that Zelda cartridge for auction is a scam.

Just read the description for the item it even lists features from the newest zelda (horseback riding and combat) that was an obvious copy/paste.

The question is brought up in the comments of the auction but I really don't think this is legit.

Eh, he does have a point, sort of.

Look at it this way:

Valve is scared of the MS app store that's going to be built into Win 8. They're scared that eventually Steam will be made inconvenient or get locked out somehow. Win 8 is closed source and Valve can't change the OS so they move to Linux. On top of Linux they launch a ton of closed source games, perpetuating the problem they ran from (inability to change source code) on an OS that was built to avoid that very thing.

Stallman might sound crazy and look weird but he has a point.

Valve should give something significant back if they're going to build on top of open source software.

I can only think that with the new hires and such they fully intend to "give something back".

This may be in the form of using their influence with hardware manufacturers to support linux in a (more) stable fashion, or perhaps they will even release their own distro.. who knows..

I dont think Valve is arrogant enough to just jump on the boat with their 500 ton gorilla, without making some re-enforcements to the hull first, and helping to grow the platform.

Our other alternatives are Apple, Google and Microsoft, obviously.. but I am not overly excited about *anything* coming (o/s wise) from these three.. and I'm happy Valve is pushing for a more viable 4th party in that race.

What's really baffling is that people apparently said "Yes, that sounds like a GREAT IDEA!" when uplay asked if it could install plugins in their browsers...

Users mindlessly clicking "yes" is the number one reason why PCs are so horribly infected with all kinds of shit.

Creston

Unfortunately, when Steam does the 'first time setup' installation of whatever various runtimes and add-on apps the publisher wants the player to have, it's almost always done in the background with no dialog windows at all...

Admittedly, the only game I ever had that installed Uplay was the latest Assassin's Creed, and I got that outside of Steam. And it simply asked me "Do you want to install our wonderful Uplay add-ins for your browser? It will let you do really awesome stuff, like... ehm... well... erm, really AMAZING STUFF!!!!"

I guess I didn't think about Steam just forcing that shit straight onto your computer. THANKS STEAM!

Creston

I can attest to this, I only had the uplay plugin from installing Anno 2070 a couple weeks ago for the Summer Sale on Steam. No notification of browser plugins whatsoever.

I would leave it up to the publisher/producer to make these kinds of options available to opt-out, as Valve/Steam cannot police the install routines of every installation to prevent them from installing browser plugins. I would say the trust is more broken from UBI (who has control of how their installer deploys, after the initial steam layer)

Just got a message on firefox telling me the uplay plugin would be disabled because of security reasons, with this information linked:

Ubisoft Uplay has been blocked for your protection.

Why was it blocked?
Version 1.0.0.0 of the Ubisoft Uplay plugin has a security vulnerability that can be exploited by malicious websites to gain control of the user's system.

Who is affected?
All Firefox users who have this plugin installed.

What does this mean?
Users are strongly encouraged to disable the problematic add-on or plugin, but may choose to continue using it if they accept the risks described.

When Mozilla becomes aware of add-ons, plugins, or other third-party software that seriously compromises Firefox security, stability, or performance and meets certain criteria, the software may be blocked from general use. For more information, please read this support article.

So Microsoft has had both it's roadmap for the next Xbox and the development kit leaked so far.. and it hasn't even been announced yet!

You know how many FBI agents Apple would have up in this guy's shit right now if it was their IP?

I'm sure he got *much* more than the $10,000 he was originally asking, likely from some shady middleman who has gotten it into Sony or Nintendo's hands.

Interesting start for the ol' MS on this round.

I picked up DayZ a couple of weeks ago during the steam sale, and it's been an absolute blast so far. Currently I have a broken leg and am awaiting a friend on VOIP to come on a rescue mission from our base camp with some morphine.

Only issues I've had are ai/collision glitches with the zombones so far.. i really hope that stuff is worked out soon, but in the meantime I have some good strategies for taking them on =)

Such an epically suspenseful and fun experience though, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking to try something "new" in the survival/zombone genre.

I'm all about discussing the positives and negatives of these companies but you guys are kinda going nuts in this thread Disguise

And rightly so. Have you seen/played D3?

I also got out of the mickey mouse club of b.net, but I had been using a cool little program that can emulate the "Authenticator Dongle" on your desktop so you dont have to buy one after paying $60 for such a monumental turd as D3 turned out to be. The program is open source so worries about malicious code can be investigated by anyone and everyone who cares.

It's called WinAuth, available here: http://code.google.com/p/winauth/

No, it wont keep you from getting hacked if you use the same password that you use on your e-mail with everything else. You deserve to get hacked if you do this.

Yes, I agree Blizzard should provide one of their Authenticators in each and every box they sell for products that require B.net, as that is the only route to semi-confidence that your account will not be hacked there. They are losing customers over this issue currently, that is a fact.

A proper 2 stage authentication should be commonplace in a system like this, I would be interested to know why Blizzard is not taking this route, but honestly right now can not be bothered to pursue any answers from Blizzard or take part in any of their cash-grab franchise self-destruction from here on out. Fin.

I would rather play the original Quake from beginning to end again (it's been at least 5 years...) and I think I'll get started tonight ^_^

I got news for you, even though most don't want to hear it and will fanboy flame to high heaven...

The last "Great" OS from Microsoft was and still is XP.

Here we are talking about modern O/S, and you are still pining for the "Glory Days of Windows XP".. lol. Learn to use something new. I don't care about whether you think you need it or not, it is quite a known fact in 2012 that Windows 7 is better than XP, and has gained it's place as a proper successor to it, which Vista never was... AND it even runs faster/more stable on old "XP Machines" in many cases.

Unless you cant find the drivers for your old sound blaster or printer it's a pretty easy and painless upgrade too. My 88yr old grandmother who used XP for 10+ years even adapted to it, in a matter or days.

Something tells me getting her to switch to "Steaminux" will be a bit more difficult =P

It's funny that before you even have a conversation about your preference of an old O/S you already identify anyone who has a different opinion as being a "fanboy", which makes you sound more like the "XP fanboy" here.

I believe the rest of us just prefer what works best for what we want to do.. and currently, that is *NOT* xp. XP was great at a time, but there are better O/S available for a while now.

Now we can finally get custom tailored Wal-Mart ads on Facebook!

Talking to your buddies about going on a camping trip this weekend? A full assortment of camping goods available at your local Wally-World will be plastered on the side of your page, available for pickup immediately! They can intelligently pick out what you will need for your trip based on your conversation.. and who doesn't want that kind of innovation?

Now what I'm *really* looking forward to some kind of system that can do this with my phone calls-- just monitor every one of them and send me an e-mail (or PM on Facebook, LOL) listing all the stuff I will need to buy from Wal-Mart based on that conversation. That is Utopia for me-- (to coin a term..) "Consumer Nirvana".

I think Micro$oft has a bad patch policy, but Fish knew what he was getting into. It is his company's fault that the game has some significant bugs, including wiping out everything a player has put into the game, and he has made money from releasing the game. On top of that, he is talking about releasing on other platforms - about making further money - and his answer is "f*ck off" to the gamers negatively impacted by his company's programming faults?

It is not that they cannot resolve the issue, it is not that they do not have the money to do so, it is not that they can give guidance to people on how to avoid it or use a workaround - his answer is simply that it is not worth it to him to patch it.

And what if his game needs another patch? Or there were bigger issues? A larger player base was affected? Just screw those people, too?
Creating, hyping, and selling a game have expectation repercussions.
Thinking issues with Micro$oft are not grounds for destroying saves,

Yep, 1% of 360 users that play this game have to suffer or get it on another platform (yay!) when it's available. I think if anyone can show they were the victim of this bug they should get a refund or voucher for the game on another platform from the dev, if he decides not to patch it.. and I see why he would choose not to.

Honestly though, I would expect a legit indie that does not have mojang sized bank accounts to *NOT* pay $40,000 for a patch that affects 1% or less of the player base, it just does not make sense and detracts from the funding of your next indie project. That 40,000 will do *MUCH* more towards the development of a new project or porting Fez to a decent platform without monetized systems (..that should be free) at every turn. (Monetize the patch process! It will improve quality! DA HURRP!)

Right about now, I'm glad to have never paid a cent for anything Xbox360 related. (EDIT: I take that back-- both my 360 controller and Hori 360 Arcade Stick are in almost-daily use on my PC, but never once hooked up to a 360!)

Don't hold your breath. If anything indie was ever officially described as a "Battlefield Killer" in any kind of serious fashion, it would be bought up by a major publisher and turned into what the shareholders would rather have, a "Call of Duty Killer", likely the very next day.

Exactly!

Precisely!

Gross corporatism is echoing a rot throughout the gaming industry currently. )= Personally, I've seen enough of this cash grabbing, IP whorehouse of a "gaming industry". We need a return to roots here, and supporting indies who understand this, as well, is a great way to start.

The monetization of even the beta testing phase of games in combination with offering yearly subscriptions to players who want to "advance faster" and be able to experience the full game they already paid for more quickly, (than the schmuck who only shilled out $60 for the game or $80+ for the limited edition, and is obviously not invested enough in the "franchise" to up his trickle feed of 'game' that's been provided in the form of 'unlocks', any quicker) is in itself, quite telling.

Duh! It works for free-to-play, so why not games we pay full price for!? Man that's ingenious!
