| Ubi/Blue Byte's own Settlers Online is better (much better) than Anno, at least at this stage in Anno's development. The only thing I like more about Anno than Settlers is the slightly superior updated engine being used. If they could port that over to Settlers it would be a win/win for Blue Byte. |

| I seem to only play Spellforce (and certainly not through Steam) when my internet connection goes down, which is only about once a year. But I do keep an install going just in case. |

The first thing you have to do is go into the video options and disable the Color Correction, otherwise everything has a blue/green tint for some odd reason, and looks way too dark. There might be a certain appeal to that spooky super-dark look but being able to actually see everything realistically is far better, and there are still areas of dim lighting.
I've had a LOT of fun in Warframe's CB for the past couple months now, there have been a few pretty major changes in that time, most of which offered big improvements. For the truly-free player there's plenty of gameplay, and you can upgrade two frames to max level for free as well as plenty of weapons. For non-paying players the only limit is in how many max-level frames and weapons you can craft so you only have fewer options but no disadvantages over paying players. |

DrSquick wrote on Nov 7, 2012, 13:09: Has anyone been able to get into this game? I have tried a couple times, and I just don't get it... I absolutely love crafting, it is my favorite part of MMOs. I also kinda love farming games, so this seemed like the perfect game; but I just don't get it.
If anyone has been able to get into it, do you have any good resources or tips? Yes I've gotten into it, and basically "maxed out" everything one can possibly do (so far) as far as learning every skill, and crafted every possible item, and built every structure and have several villages under my control. It takes a while, a couple months at least to get there but the depth and complexity is much more than first impressions may give. It's a true open sandbox, no quests no levels and almost no guidance or set goals beyond the first few steps so you pretty much create your own game within the framework laid out. There are several game mechanics that are very original and difficult to grasp (such as the Gluttony system) even for the experienced well-educated old school Gamer, and a different game pace than almost everything else out there that takes some getting used to. The learning curve is odd also - very very slow at first and simply finding a good place to build a small settlement in the huge unexplored New World can take days of real-world time. At first you can find and "see" almost nothing, but as you progress the items which can be found increases exponentially until eventually your screen and minimap is literally filled with forage-able treasure just waiting to be gathered while exploring.
Here is an excellent up-to-date guide from the Forum: http://forum.salemgame.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=181
And the Wiki is very helpful, although a few things out of date since there was just a new UI released with new graphics: http://salemwiki.info/index.php/Main_Page
There are also a few custom clients (the vanilla client is VERY rough and very beta) with a popular one here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/18779594/salem/salem2.jnlp
There are also quite a lot of YouTube videos that are helpful, just search "Salem mmo". |

| I tried it thinking maybe I was in the mood for something a bit different, and knowing ahead of time about the simplistic graphics. It turns out I couldn't handle THAT much graphic simplicity no matter how solid the game might be. Also, movement speed is snail-paced and exceedingly slow to the extreme. Uninstalled after my first match. |

Ant wrote on Mar 10, 2011, 11:06: So, is this game any good? Just played my first match after the quick tutorial and it was fun for sure. Combat is very fast, smooth and chaotic with possibilities of more tactical play depending on what weapons you use. The production values are quite high and it is much more polished than I would have ever expected. I thought the gameplay videos that have been floating around for a while made the graphics look a bit plain and maybe a little boring but I was totally wrong about that - the look is super fantastic! It looked decent at the default low-rez 1024 x 768 but after cranking up to full rez and maximum detail the look is awesome.
The art style is a little generic but not bad at all. Of course it won't be for everyone (maybe the more serious minded hardcore) because it is all toys and shrill-voiced schoolgirl shrieks of joy after a kill, bright cartoony models and over the top weaponry that could never exist in nature, but if you don't mind all that and are an open minded shooter fan then there is some lighthearted fun to be had. Plus its free so why not? Remains to be seen whether the younger demographic will prove to be too annoying in the long run but for jumping in for a few quick toy-on-toy ultra violence and mayhem matches it seems pretty good. It's basically "Toy Story" lite with fragging.
Maybe it is only for the OB, but I was a little surprised to see that you start a match with an entire full arsenal of weaponry which has seemingly every archetype ever known to Man, so you can start right off with whatever you want to experiment with - very cool. Two of the four characters are unlocked right away (the Big guy and the Schoolgirl) with the Robot and the Evil girl locked but purchaseable with in-game $ that you earn through playing. I noticed that I started off right away with enough funds to purchase both immediately if I wanted - maybe another OB perk - but I think there are better weapons you can buy too so I held off spending any $ on new characters for now.
tl:dr - first impression is that it's pretty good and worth a look |

Longtime Stomped fan here too, I still miss it although Blue's is alright I guess. I know there a few other former Stompers here like DryHump and others whose names I don't recall offhand. Great bunch of gamer guys for sure |

| I see the "lighthearted cute goth" theme to be more along the lines of maybe sony's old MediEvil series or going back further like Ghosts n' Goblins, you know that basic style. Or as in the trailer description Tim Burton's Nightmare before Christmas. Or even some of the cartoony yet incredibly gory stuff as some of the more obscure toons on Adult Swim. Those all have pretty macabre themes and depictions, yet are very stylized and unrealistic. And they manage to be enjoyable. |

They end up kind of skirting the issue of perma-death this way, if it works out how it sounds. You DO really die. but the player can still continue on as their own descendent. I don't know how much of an actual penalty that is - not too much it sounds like. After the little mini-controversy the original announcement of perma-death stirred up, this just makes you go "meh". They may have missed an opportunity to capitalize on something that would make them stand out a bit from the crowd of other MMOs even though truly losing a toon by dying would be brutal.
On the other hand it does build on that idea of Revenge against the one who killed your previous incarnation - your Father, or Uncle or however they handle it. Might work out ok, we'll see. |
