| So far I'm enjoying the game on its own... but it really seems to fail in terms of continuity with the first one... and especially with the interim comic. |

Hopefully, but it doesn't look promising so far: it seems to include hats (I even received one that was carried from TF2), gestures and other mostly cosmetic things. |

...only to have it glitch and keep you from entering the chopper. Try a suggested fix, go through the whole sequence again only to find out it doesn't work. Rinse and repeat.
Happened to quite a few people (including yours truly). |

| Has anyone successfully loaded a game that was started prior to installing this mod? I've already had to start a new game after my harddrive crashed and I don't have the energy nor time for a third play-through. |

They are definitely working on the next HL and it will be huge. At least, that's ho I read it. 
It's certainly more encouraging - and perhaps revealing - than any form of PR-laced "We're truly committed to the franchise and you can expect us to innovate in ways unimagined before." type of remarks. |
