I couldn't agree more about Warlock, I've played the demo 3 times even though the start is the same each time. The first play I built a human army with equipment upgrades and felt out the game. The second play I built many mana traps and cast spells and summoned creatures. The last play I just tried, I had a go at storming the portal to the desert world to see if I could settle there... I got my ass handed to me by werewolves, vampires, imps, devils and a greater fire elemental, it was awesome.

I am breaking my "one commandment" and preordering this, the demo is more fun than Civ 5 and is genuinely addictive. Also it's a proper old fashioned demo with a genuine slice of gameplay and replayability that puts some full games to shame.

Edit: Just pre-ordered, the release date is a week away. Wow, I am looking forward to this one and it came out of nowhere! I didn't know it existed a few days back.

16. Re: Warlock - Master of the Arcane Demo Apr 27, 2012, 23:43 MisterBenn

I really enjoyed trying out the demo, it plays quite a bit like Civ 5 except the hexes/1UPT/tactical nature of things seems better suited to this scale rather than trying to capture a planet scale.

The best parts of the Civ 5 combat are there except you have the RPG layer on top, with traditional strenths and weaknesses between factions and creature types, along with improvements and equipment upgrades from your buildings, and the enchantments, blessings and curses that get thrown around by the magic system.

The overall gameplay flows very well and I really think they captured the "individual decisions are simple but they allow for good variety and strategy" well and at first glance I think it's got several advantages over Civ 5!

I agree completely with the disadvantages that Totalbiscuit was talking about:

* Microing all your units is a little bit too clicky (your city defenders wake up every turn even when the attacker is flying and they can't engage it).

* The tech tree is a set of spells but you are offered a shortlist of 5 each time, in seemingly random order so there doesn't seems to be progression or specialisation. Maybe this will get improved? It feels a bit placeholder.

* There are only 3 factions. I didn't see all of the one from the demo so it seems there's quite a lot to each one, but I can't see that that is enough.

Anyhow I am really excited about this one, it's very accessible and playable and seems to have a good RPG side to it. And it's 15!

like asking that fly on my wall to hit itself with a magazine and fall neatly into the trashcan.

I've heard of asking turkeys to vote for Christmas... is this one a real phrase? I like it!

Ah that's interesting about Dynamic Merchants... I've already swapped over so I'll see how it pans out. The greeting range seems good so far, I had something similar in Morrowind.

I've mostly used Nexus Mod Manager and Wrye Bash until now but just started getting some mods from the Steam Workshop. I noticed you have to redownload the mods from Steam every time if you use an external utility to reorder the mods! That's a killer for me with a 2Mb connection. My newly discovered tip of the day is to just favourite them rather than subscribe...

If there's time for a couple more suggestions, here are my current favourites:

1) Skyrim Creatures Alive (wilderness spawns are reworked. High level creatures are rare but possible at any level so you are genuinely taking a risk to go out wandering at low levels.

2) Realistic Lighting with Customisation - an overall weather and lighting mod with options to set the nights and dungeons super dark if you like that. Natural skies at all times of day and no performance impact from the method they use.

3) If you like hunger/thirst mods, Imp's More Complex Needs is superb. You'll need to think about your eat/drink/sleep as you go adventuring, great if you like to take your time and really get into it!

As mentioned, SkyUI is the absolute must. Your life will be a lot easier if you use the Nexus Mod Manager to install your mods.

You know that MS will come up with some "incentive" to upgrade, such as DirectX 12 only being available for Windows 8...

I suspect that the decking was a bargaining chip: Blue foregoes settling on the contested zone in exchange for preferential treatment in trade negotiations with Blue Towers. Manstovia is a burgeoning state but lacks natural resources and is dependent on raw meat imports for its economic wellbeing!

WoW was the "Beatles" of the MMOs, it was a world phenomenon and gave something on a scale that had never been seen before. That's an incredibly hard achievement to repeat in what is now a diversifying and fragmenting genre. Only something genuinely revolutionary would rejoin the same player base and attain the same level of success that WoW had.

The MMOs on the horizon offer numerous technical improvements, higher production values, better technology... you name it. But can any single product deliver something so special that all MMO players will come across to it? They all offer an evolutionary step on top of what has come before but you can only experience that mind-blowing shattering of your innocence once!

Off topic a little: did you guys see that the Yogscast have launched a Kickstarter appeal? I just saw it on YT a second ago, I actually thought it was a late April Fool's joke but I think they might actually be serious. It's almost indistinguishable from Minecraft and they go as far as to say "Screw you Notch" in the clip!!!

CLIP

If this is in fact a joke, consider me successfully trolled...

That doesnt stop Adobe Flash Player from crashing. It just doesnt crash Firefox with it, but it does lock up FF for about 30secs while the plugin crashes, which happens constantly.

This is my exact problem too, it drives me up the wall. I get it every day when using YouTube, particularly when my connection is lagging. Interesting to read that Chrome plays better and has AdBlock... I must give it a try. AdBlock and Sync are the only addons I really care about in my browser.

Thanks for replying LittleMe. Yep that's what I meant with the YouTube videos, by restart the vid I meant "seek to the start"

You're right about havign patience, although it's been this way for about a year. Firefox, Flash Player and ATI drivers have all been been through multiple updates and I've stopped holding my breath when one of them is patching these days. What I haven't tried is another browser, I like Firefox, don't want IE and don't like the idea of putting more power in the hands of Google with Chrome...

I just realised I don't have any interest in the next gen of consoles. I owned all the generations of playstation but my PS3 just gathers dust with the exception of family gaming on Rock Band 3. Consoles are also too restrictive and inflexible to operate as a media centre compared to PCs too, so overall I can't imagine I will buy one. I've been primarily a computer user since the Spectrum but I've always had a console too... feels a bit like the end of an era is coming!

News Comments > New AMD/ATI Reference Drivers
18. Re: New AMD/ATI Reference Drivers Mar 28, 2012, 20:57 MisterBenn

Let's see how these drivers fare then. I'm not hugely impressed with ATIs drivers on Windows 7. I have two systems with ATI, my desktop has a 6950 and is 64 bit, my laptop has an X600 mobility(!) and is 32 bit and both run Windows 7. Both systems have the same issues with YouTube:

1) The video is corrupted and plays as though it started from a plain green key frame (i.e. wierd details move within a sea of bright green) when you start a video. This sometimes fixes itself within a few seconds otherwise you need to restart the clip to make it right.

2) If you scroll YouTube while the clip is playing, sometimes all text disappears and the video window goes plain black. After you stop scrolling, after a few seconds all returns to normal again.

3) I get quite frequent crashes if I jump between several videos in quick succession while looking for something. I get the firefox crash with the error report screen.

Numbers 2 and 3 occur much more at times of slow connection. I have had literally hundreds of occurrences of number 3 between the two systems!

Does anyone have experience of this? The laptop was fine before Windows 7 and both systems are quite regular. It happens so much that can't be the only one! I wonder if it's a compatability issue between Windows 7 / Firefox / Flash Player / ATI driver combination....

(Fuck, I should have started downloading these before writing all that!)

Hey Batman have you tried the Skyrim Creatures Alive mod? It's my new favourite... it keeps the wilderness spawns themed by region but it unlevels them. The most powerful spawns are very low probability but potentially you can meet them anywhere! I can fully attest that it removes the lack of fear you normally have while wondering and my new character has had to run for his life on a few occasions!

(By the way I realise this is the worst kind of addiction support but it's really worth trying!!!)
