News Comments > Steamships Ahoy - The Elders Scrolls V: Skyrim - Hearthfire
8. Re: Steamships Ahoy - The Elders Scrolls V: Skyrim - Hearthfire Oct 5, 2012, 00:44 MisterBenn

The more I think about it, the more I'm thinking Bethesda have been quite smart in their approach to Skyrim. You get a game out of the box that keeps console and PC players alike happy. Some of the DLC is a bit of a cash in but it is optional as it should be and seems still viable to those with no access to mods. PC users get mods to make the game as beautiful, challenging and replayable as they like. Shareholders benefit from the after sales DLC revenue, and apart from the DLC so far being unremarkable, noone really gets offended.

I think it's to Bethesda's credit that they've been savvy enough to balance the interests of all groups very fairly, offering PC and console gamers alike lots of what they are used to to be happy, while spinning a decent profit without resorting to some of the nastier business tactics that do the rounds these days.

Yeah, I'm still loving Skyrim very much but the DLC so far has left me cold. As soon as they release something substantial, a decent new landmass or something with new game mechanics that are useful across the whole game, they will get more of my money incredibly quickly.

26. Re: XCOM: Enemy Unknown Launch Trailer Oct 4, 2012, 19:42 MisterBenn

I really hope this is awesome, it looks fun but I'm a bit concerned. The streamlining in Civ 5 was too much for me, and things like abilities instead of inventory worries me in the same way. Part of the fun previously was organising the base output to have good supplies of decent weapons and it tied back into the science too. From what I've seen, the aliens always announce themselves with a cutscene so there is no getting shot at out of the dark, that's a bit of a shame. I think there's it will definitely have some fun in it but it might take a bit of a leap to embrace some of the changes.

I got the impression from one gameplay vid from an expo that some effort has gone into the head to head multiplayer. It looked like good fun, you could select from your faction's roster and fight it out over single maps and it gave the impression that the factions in that setting had effort put into them to balance them out. That could be an interesting new facet although it might be necessary to actually avoid the multiplayer unless you immediately see the entire set of aliens in your first sitting!

All you need to do is hamstring the progress of the country and its ability to keep pace with the world, and you could increase the turnover of this specific sector!

I'm really interested in this game but I'll hang fire and get some opinions and watch a gameplay video or two. I think like Civ 5 the streamlining will be a bit polarising and it might take a bit of a leap to embrace the new changes. Things like abilities instead of inventory are quite offputting so I'll wait and see.

What I would say is that the video that I watched a while back made it look like the 2 player deathmatch was interesting. Select some units and abilities from your faction then fight it out over a single encounter map. The action and tactics looked good at first glance.

News Comments > Torchlight II Development Video
8. Re: Torchlight II Development Video Sep 29, 2012, 23:49 MisterBenn

Nice video, I like that tune too.

I am loving Torchlight 2 so much, it's been years since I played a single game so fiercely, day after day. I've been playing Veteran - Hardcore and as a result I haven't seen all of the story yet. I just lost a L26 engineer, he got taken out by one of those sniper engineers from act 2, he was at 80% health but his shield was down and that was enough. Just as I was starting to feel safe behind a wall of gadgets!

I cannot believe this was a cut price game! The action is rock solid and there seems to be lots of different builds available, I have tried all sorts of stuff with varying levels of success. Also while the cartoony style is not my first choice, some of the environments are really good, my favourite was the dungeon in act 2 with the mana fissures that kept spewing out mana bursts.

In my mind this genuinely lives up to Diablo 2. I've been following Path of Exile keenly, particularly the Builds of the Week on YouTube - and while it will no doubt have its particular strengths, I wonder how it can compete with this game as an overall package.

Yeah that's a pretty weak premise for an article. Some games haven't aged well, is that a surprise? Production values, interface and interconnectivity are the main gains since the ninetees but you have a great deal of compromises too. Some ninetees games achieved over 5 or 10 years of replayability! How many games from this decade will manage that?

Of course you still get gems these days but in general the mainstream of modern gaming is more mass produced, less interactive, more dilute, more chaperoned, less finished and less owned than it used to be!

(Ahhh - I know that firmly defines me as old, crusty and predictable but it felt good!)

Definitely arcadey, those cars have like 5x the grip you'd expect and can make large readjustments while going round a corner with no issues whatsoever! I am looking for another sim, my G25 has been gathering dust since NFS Shift 1 + mods.

Considering people normally have a single wheel and PC at their house, I think more racing sims should cater for "party mode" time trails, letting friends play in any order on a chosen course and maintain a chart of everyone's best times with named ghosts selectable so you can jump in and out and compete. It seems to be such a simple thing and yet I always found games wouldn't directly let me do that.

News Comments > Pro Evolution Soccer 2012 Second Demo
2. Re: Pro Evolution Soccer 2012 Second Demo Sep 24, 2012, 10:04 MisterBenn

I've loved the Pro Evo series for over a decade but the big news this year is that League Mode is missing. This was a great and heavily used feature and has been in place as long as the game has, I think the only explaination is that EA has managed to get the league mode removed in their exclusivity deal for the Premiership. The game has had to use unofficial names for teams, players and stadiums as well as unofficial strips for years now but mods have corrected those quickly every year. This is really disappointing, the purist alternative to Fifa just got neutered...

Edit: No riots I'm afriad but I always wished they tracked the temperament of players. They have stats for everything else! I want to see the possibility of moody players like Rooney or Balotelli getting angry when you are losing and getting themselves carded or sent off for arguing or violent conduct!

I updated that quote, sorry Prez. I was alt-tabbing in and out of the game at the time...

The main thing I see with the skills is that by level 20 characters of a given class will not all be the same, there definitely seems to be scope to make different builds within a class. And you can only respec the last few points you spent so you do need to think ahead and commit yourself in a chosen direction. It's straightforward enough but it does everything well from what I've seen.

So what kind of changes did they make to the skill tree since the beta? The beta tree was kind of boring because most of the upgrades were just like +5% to whatever. Yawn. I hope they made it more interesting since then.

I felt the same thing in the beta. The main thing they added since to combat that is that every skill that gives an active ability gets extra effects that kick in at 5, 10, 15 out of 15 points invested to avoid some of the skills being a one point wonder.

Edit: I screwed up when quoting, that line was quoted from Wowbagger_TIP rather than Prez. Corrected now.

I just didn't care for the art syle and, sadly, T2 looks like more of the same.

Definitely try the demo out. Although I wish it was a little darker the style does bug me less than TL1, I think maybe the camera's a little more zoomed out so you focus on the action and the spacing of players and mobs more than the models previously. The skill system got a bunch of improvements since the beta so I don't know what to expect there so much but what I do know from the beta is that the basic mechanics of the fighting are done fantastically well. The action is very slick and the hits that you land are very punchy and satisfying... I was struck by this several times in the 10 hours I played. The difficulty level seemed well adjusted too, you had to stay on your toes not to die a lot of the time. I'm very much looking forward to Path of Exile too but I expect that Torchlight 2 will be my favourite all round package from the current crop of action RPGs.

Fantastic, I am downloading now. Apart from wishing the graphic style was a little grittier, I loved the beta so I can't wait to jump in properly now. I managed to avoid touching D3 at all so this is basically Diablo Day for me. Allthumbsup

I believe I read somewhere that a unified online magic interface bringing Magic Online and a DOTP-like graphics together was being planned, although that was over a year ago and I haven't seen any announcements or anything yet.

It's worth mentioning that the community has come up with about 30 decks as well so far which are all free. I download those but I also buy all the DLC because variety is good but also I think the game in general is great value particularly at budget price and I want to encourage them to keep updating it.

On my third game of FTL I managed to get and afford a decent second energy weapon quite quickly and that was my best run by far, I got mutual destruction with the final boss. It's already been great value for money but I agree there seems to be a small number of random events. I would hope the support would run a little longer and then hopefully in the same spirit as the kickstarter the game would then be opened to modding, then its trajectory would extend hugely. I suspect people would produce good amounts of events and content, along with the obligatory Star Trek and Star Wars mods of course. Escaping the Empire's fleet with the Death Star schematics would be awesome!

Also, get ready for a deluge of imitators. This kind of light content / controls / processing requirement gaming will spin a fortune on mobile devices for whoever makes the effort...
