I think if we stacked the lists together sadly the List, ME/ME2, HL2, Mirror's Edge, Metroid is on would be dwarfed by the other list. this feeds into my point And if we did the same thing with Hollywood movies, we'd have a list that looks the same. I'm guessing movie culture is a hopeless, sexist mess that should be addressed similarly?
Draugr wrote on Sep 8, 2011, 17:59: Also, comparing men to women in the pin-up categories is a battle you've already lost. Just go to any gaming con. When I see the men being represented the way the women are then I'll say I was wrong. If you're reffering to stereotypical characters, then once again the list of stereo type female characters to stereotyped male characters is, once again, much longer. Duke Nukem, Gears of War, God of War, most every game with a male lead character? What do they all have in common? Six-pack abs, massive muscles, rugged "cowboy" looks to them. AKA, the perfect male form. They all look like Greek gods. Now tell me that isn't anymore unrealistic then women in games? The difference is men don't normally feel "threatened" by these images, but that doesn't mean they aren't there. But please, show me that they have many, many images at gamers con of the average joe (and I don't mean the people attending). |

Right, because games like Bayonetta, DOA, and Lollipop chainsaw aren't all there just waiting to illustrate my point. They might not be offensive in the same fashion, but it does help illustrate Sexism/views of women in gaming culture. Don't forget to add games like Metroid, Beyond Good and Evil, Mirrors Edge and Half Life 2, showing such sexism/views of women in gaming culture. Just to name a few more. Congraz, your able to single out a few games to try to make everything fit only your view. I can single things out to and they can show you a completely different view. Its like everything in life, yes some can offer more "crude" concepts of people and treat them like objects, but the fact is, it's not just against women. For every woman-pinup there are just as many men-pinup (like "Firefighter Steve") |

Think I'll be getting this one. All it now comes down to is what kind of DRM (if any) will it be using? Anyone know? Is it just Steamworks? One of the selling points to me... no auto-regen health like in CoD or Duke Nukem. Granted the auto-regen armor is a bit debatable, but it seems like a fun game. Looks great, plays great maxed out on my laptop. Also love the whole cyberpunk feel it has visually.
*edit* Nevermind about the DRM part. Seems they already addressed this issue. It won't have DRM. Pre-ordered now. Article about DRM (and other game issues)

Tanto Edge wrote on Sep 2, 2011, 00:06: ipad development isn't limited by lack of Flash support. That's just something flash developers bitch about. Frankly, you can export from Flash CS5 directly to iCrap, whereas on the Android side of things we have to ask the end user to install the Adobe AIR add on. Talk about bunk. It's kinda like DirectX, insofar as needing directx where you could write an app in opengl. I'm not trying to compare languages, just the fundamental idea of installing a third party software package. Not that simple. Thing is, last I knew, Flash has great development tools that really help, something iOS sorely lacks. And as long as iOS doesn't have as good as development tools as Flash does then it can in some ways be holding it back. Sure you could code the game from scratch but that adds a lot of overhead to create, where the tools would help speed/simplify the whole procedure. And no, making all games in engines like Unity 3D isn't the answer since engines do have limits. One of the reasons that there are a few out there since each has ups and downs. |

At this point I'd rather play MW3 over BF3 due to origin. But due to the Infinity Ward fiasco I'm left with choosing neither. Guess I'll play Rage + Deus Ex + Fallout New Vegas (late to the party) + Skyrim. Ummmm... I know that both Fallout New Vegas and Skyrim are part of Steamworks... welcome to the game, enjoy playing. |

Some people seem to be treating this as a big new development, especially with Steam vs Origin but it's more of an expected confirmation than anything. Yeah, it's confusing how stories like these always turn out.
If anything, it blatantly exposes people who rant and rave on message boards about things they don't actually know anything about or even otherwise care about. Anyone who actually cares about this stuff would know that Call of Duty has used Steamworks for almost 3 years now, so this story isn't surprising in the least, and trying to paint this as a deliberate move specifically motivated to counter Battlefield 3 is pretty silly. You completely missed my point. I didn't say anything about being surprised about CoD being on Steamwork since, yes it has always been. The issue is now we have 2 of the biggest military-style shooters coming out at around the same time on 2 very different services. I'm wondering how/if this might work out considering how many people have shown they don't like what has been shown so far of Origin. |

^D^ QFT. The man has done more for the computing/tech world than all the haters could ever do. Oh? Name one good thing he did for the computer/tech world that wasn't a copy of someone else's work? Remember, OSX was a copy of BSD, NExt was a copy of the Mach Kernal, iPad was a copy of Android tablets from China made in 2009, ect... Hah. The kernel of OSX, Darwin, is not a COPY of BSD but a derivative of it. Linux is more of a UNIX copy than Darwin is.
Second, there is no way the iPad is a copy of an android tablet. The iPad was in the works for many years long before android was anything at all. The timeline does not make sense at all to call the iPad a copy. Plus, Jobs said a year or so ago in an interview that they were working on the iPad before the iPhone, but decided the time was better to make the phone first.
You need to get your facts straight. As it stands, it's obvious you're just a blind apple hater. If you believe that they had been making the iPad before the iPhone and so long ago then I have a bridge in London to sell you real cheap. Thing is, Steve Jobs is noted for this PR comments. He said the same about removing DRM from music, too bad it was also at the same time that Amazon was about to sell DRM-free music and iTunes sold the same DRM-free tracks that Amazon sold at the same time. Its just a PR move and Jobs likes to say these things to make it seem like they aren't copying as badly as they are.
Also, I'm not being a blind hater, I'm asking an honest question. Where is Apples originality? As always, I ask and people either ignore the facts, repeat the Apple marketing or try labeling me a blind hater , all while being unable to show where Apple was original. And you've decided to be just the same as the other Apple fanboys. Congraz on a lack of originality. |

The claim I keep hearing that the iPad must be new and innovative because it runs off an OS that was made for touchscreens and the iOS powered iPad was the first one to do it, then Android. But Android tablets were out for almost a full year before the iPad. Nice attempt of trying to derail the question though. |

The problem is, the mark he's left in technology isn't a good one, it was a major step backwards one imho. Ranging from copying other peoples technology and marketing them as their own original ideas (OSX from BSD, NExT from the Mach Kernel, iPad from Android tablets in China from 2009, ect...) to turning computer technology into a locked down state like modern consoles (iOS and in some ways Mac computers), this isn't what I'd feel is a good mark in technology, but a really bad move into a feeling of '1984' except its Big Corperation that is controlling the strings instead of Big Brother. |

It's possible to catch every single bug before release obviously I remember the days before the internet. Games had to be as bug-free as possible since patching was almost impossible after the game was shipped. Now with the internet, buggy code is the normal for games since they can patch it up later (if ever...). The games of today are also infinitely more complicated and running on many more hardware configurations then back in the day as well. Yeah, but newer games also made with better tools that can do better error checking, and hardware issues shouldn't be as big an issue since we now have API's that weren't available back then. But these issues (including many hardware ones) still happen today, more so then they ever did. Same has been noticed in console games. Newer console games have so many patches, many zero-day and this never was an issue until companies were able to issues patches. |
