you want choices that matter? Play Alpha Protocol. Terrible combat but the plot forced you into hard choices that were interesting to make.

MMX requires Uplay. Sadly that is a pass.

18. Re: Metacritic Analysis Jan 22, 2014, 08:30 avianflu

Metacritic is dreadful but we all knew that anyway. It IS revealing when the professional reviews dont at all jibe with the consumer reviews.

There's no other website that shows that dissonance so for that reason only I find metacritic marginally "useful"

Early beta release benefits the devs with consumer $$ but I dont see the compelling benefit at all for the typical game consumer.

Consumers have already figured this out -- you can see people grumbling in the steam forums and many are saying "rip off."

some PR company working with MS to promote the console messed up badly. I am not shocked.

Likely this is simply the xboxlive "HD version" that came out 2 years ago. I realize the press blurb says otherwise but the screen caps shown on Steam dont look redrawn from scratch.

The exec is obviously mad, so I would take what he says to the press with a grain of salt. He's looking to slash and burn.

it is big business and lobbyists that are driving these "federal laws" into existence.

Banner Saga -- it looks good but call me when the game's 3 parts are actually complete.

love these games, even though they have been in a circling pattern for quite a while now.

i am playing the "offline" console version of diablo 3 and its great.

Perhaps 2013 will be remembered as the year that the publishers (hopefully?) figured out that every game franchise cannot be massaged into "Pay to play" format.

I get a whiff of indifference from Valve about all of their own recent Valve technologies.

Not sure Valve cares all that much, as they swim in their cash.

Granted "Steam Machine" is nice and catchy for selling purposes, but few will buy these things.

14. Re: Criterion Cofounders Leave Jan 4, 2014, 08:51 avianflu

That's Just Wrong.

1. Their criterion engine on the PS2 was truly a marvel for its time. Ridiculous framerates with impressive particle effects.

2. Burnout 2 is an arcade racing classic game. Burnout 3 and 4 are really solid.

Their later games are bland. But their starting point was memorable.

41. Re: GOG.com Drops Fallout Games Jan 2, 2014, 09:32 avianflu

The genuine consumer success of Steam is 98% founded upon that they sell major release games for 10 bucks. Consumers really like that.

39. Re: GOG.com Drops Fallout Games Jan 2, 2014, 09:20 avianflu

As long as the Steam network client is *required* to be installed in order to play game, it is a form of digital rights management whose purpose is to authenticate your "right to play that game"

Saying that Steamworks is DRM, but Steam is not, has me cross-eyed.

Cmon guys, in real world functionally, the Steam client is corporate DRM.

Slash re: your statement that Steam would be around "till we all die"

That is a very 20th Century statement. Few businesses of any sort large or small last that long these days. I couldnt take that idea at all seriously.

I do think Steam will be completely viable for another 5 years. After that? Who knows.
