I doubt LoL hurt this game as much as DotA 2 has. You went to HoN for competitive play. You played LoL just to have a good time. DotA 2 has eaten up the competitive market so that doesn't leave HoN with much left.

This is not true at all. Hon was a ghost town long before the dota 2 beta came out. And LoL had more tourneys long before dota 2 also.

Hmm. I'll take your word for it. I only played HoN regularly up until release. LoL was more of a joke game at that time, in my mind at least, with no real balance.

The fact that they are going tactical turn-based I take as a good sign that they know at least a little of what they are doing... but "meh".

I would be more interested in a project that completely virtualized the pen and paper experience of Shadowrun by supplying an online interface for running your own Shadowrun game. Resources, map builders, character generators, video chat, tactical maps that automatically incorporate game mechanics without having to reference tables and books. Have a couple pre-built runs and campaigns for lazy GMs or a group of gamers where no on wants to GM, but also include tools for a passionate GM to customize and build their own game and then either look for players or hand out logins to their friends.

I see a project/concept like that doing a lot better with pen and paper source material and their audience than trying to convert them into an MMO. Monetization may not have the same dollars as working in the raw pen and paper environment, but your distribution and printing costs would be nothing and you could sell pre-built campaigns, tile-sets for the map builder, different versions of rule-sets or even charge a low subscription.

Anyways, might give this a look. Browser based isn't really a concern unless by that they mean it is going to be Flash. At which point I say "Ugh."

Something like Roll 20, but tuned specifically for Shadowun and better itegration.

Not saying HoN isn't a good game, but the only reason to keep with it now is that their style is more preferable to you than DotA 2 or LoL.

Metacritic is useful in the same way that Market Spend is useful, Pre-Order Sales is useful and Actual Sales is useful. They give the publisher/developer some standard tools and metrics to gauge the success or failure of their product in a logically consistent way.

The problem is when the the publisher/developer/consumer any one metric (or even all of them) to be the "END ALL BE ALL" metric that has everything to do with a game's success. Making Metacritic a line item in contract payout and bonuses is about as dumb as you can get. Especially once you consider how Metacritic converts certain scores or a reviews site's bias.

IGN and most other "reviewer" outlets are just pissed cause metacritic has no affiliation with anyone, and allows users to post their own reviews.

Long live metacritic - F IGN.

I'm pretty sure GameSpot owns Metacritic. In addition to that, no one cares about user reviews in the industry. They are meaningless.

The MMO market is fine, and there's still plenty of people paying for subscriptions. There are more games out there and people are spread out across them, but for the most part they're all doing fine as long as they were created and are run with reasonable expectations of subscriptions.

The fact that Horizons and a number of smaller MMOs still exists is a clear sign to me that there is a level that most MMOs can live at that is well below "WoW" expectations and still deliver to its player base an enjoyable experience, even if it is just a glorified chat room.

Seriously, he enjoys hanging out in the Den and stays there almost ALL day. But close the kitchen-door to the Family Room (still giving him access to Den AND Kitchen) and he wants out.

We have two huskies and it is the exact same thing. They will lie under my desk or under my fiance's desk for hours on end in different positions. Close the door to the office and they just sit right in front it whimpering like it is the end of the world. Open it and they will run around like crazy for a few minutes until they figure out nothing changed.... then come right back into the office and plop down.

Nah, dogs are awesome pets.

Can't agree more. Dog parks are great for getting a lot of the socialization problems out of the way. Once our pups were vaccinated we started taking them down there and that helped work out a lot of the issues with other people and other dogs. You have to be very mindful though of your pup and other pups at the parks though because other people usually aren't or their dogs don't socialize well and things can get very ugly to the level of blood and police being involved. If you see a hint of a problem, it is usually best just to pack your pup up and go for a walk. That being said, our pups are now great with kids and have no problems on walks when most other dogs are encountered.

The best thing I could ever suggest for a dog owner is to establish a regular pattern with your pup. Make it active, involve them in the little things in your life, but keep the pattern of exercise/feeding/bathroom basically the same and you won't have many problems once they learn the rituals.

Sorry, blithering idiot alarm has sounded.

Oh. Offline characters wouldn't be able to get achievements, join Battle.Net games (could join LAN games maybe) or participate in either the Gold or RM Auction House. Sorry. I thought that was pretty clear that those things were possible and wouldn't cost much money (given Blizzard's profit margins) to implement.

I really need to get my hearing checked. I didn't hear the "blithering idiot alarm" till you joined the thread.

So which game features fully destructible environments aside from minecraft?

Someone just needs to take the Minecraft engine, multiply the number of blocks the specific units of environment and objects consist of from 1 to about 1 million and there you go. Fully destructible environment and objects.

Oh. A good theoretical quantum computer to run that game wouldn't hurt either.

I guess you play Diasko 3 ?and if so forget about this "Hopefully they will get rid of this DRM" because you accepted it with one game tho not the other....Thats wierd don't ya think

Although you can draw a comparison between Uplay and Battle.Net, it really isn't that cut and dry. Even though anti-piracy is a big win for the publisher in how B.Net functions, it at least makes a honest attempt of giving the user features and security in exchange for the annoyance that is DRM. Blizzard has no legitimate reason for not offering an offline mode to D3, but to say their DRM scheme is the same as Uplay when it comes to user acceptance leaves out the added value B.Net offers.

I suppose though, in the end they are both still shackles that hamper your gaming experience, and a solid gold shackle with gems and shinies in it isn't much better than a cold iron one, but at least B.Net makes an effort to make up for it. If that effort isn't enough for you though... Well, don't buy any of their games. Problem solved.

And I find that odd given how close most major and minor Canadian towns/cities are to the border and even technically closer to ship to than some American border towns.

Curious if that has something to do with US or CA Customs. Governments do a lot of funky shit to stabilize their markets and since MX and CA are so close they might have more costly regulations than SG. SG for a matter of fact might even have some lower costs or streamlined customs because it has high level of exports. The US is also mainly a consumer. We don't like to give other people stuff. Shipping to other countries is a strange and foreign concept to us. Unless it is guns. Those are free.

Don't know. Hopefully the one world government/robot overlords will solve this problem.

That's vastly overstating the importance of Amazon. People still want and need to go shopping for food and clothes in actual stores.

I agree with you for the most part as most people are reluctant to change their shopping habits and clothes shopping itself is always useful to have a fitting room instead of buy it, ship it, doesn't fit, return it and wait for a different size. As a guy though, unless I'm buy a suit I don't really try things on beforehand anyways and I know my dimensions well enough to order online and usually not have a problem.

Food will be even easier. Sure, I'm not going to order fresh fruit, vegetables or meat from Amazon. That is what Farmer's Markets are for the most part. But Tuna? Bread? Mayo and instant dinners or mixes? Sure. Why not? The stuff is filled with preservatives, frozen or with a long enough shelf life where it wouldn't matter. Why not get it delivered to my door?

Ouch. A lot of a CEO's power is in their image and confidence. Talking with Pachter and saying something like that is almost asking for confidence in you to dwindle and cost you your job. Certainly doesn't help boost your stock.

That's just splitting hairs over the terminology. You brought up some examples of modern franchises that seem like there is no downside, your exact phrasing was "if that were true then Call of Duty 3 or Black Ops wouldn't have sold half as well". I brought up some previous examples to show that nothing short of the Mario franchise is etched in stone in the videogame industry.

My point with bringing those up was that a large customer base for video games are willing to have the same non-innovative crap shoved down their throats similar to generic, special-effect filled, action movies. Not to suggest that those specific IPs would sell forever, but what they currently represented would always be present in some form or another in the industry as a counter to ASeven's post saying the customers are going to suddenly revolt and crash the industry unless only a certain quality of video games were developed and the industry stopped with DLC and iterative IPs.

Dades wrote on Jul 11, 2012, 18:26:
I think F2P is a lot more promising but it begs the question of what investors will finance the upfront costs if there are no box sales.

I don't think the F2P model works well for all genres/styles though. Skyrim, Bioshock & Fallout 3 would of been horrible experiences in the F2P model, in my opinion. A solid base game with a ~$60 amount of initial content with episodic/extra additional content at a reasonable fee is the only way to tell a decent story through a video game. Maybe they could of released the first 3 hours of the game for free and then make you pay $10 for each additional 3-5 hours, in an episodic-ish model... but that is pretty much just like offering a free demo.

If you are saying that maybe there will no longer be a place for games like Bioshock, Skyrim and Fallout 3 and the experiences they delivered in the industry's future, then that possibility makes me a sad panda. :C
