That is great stuff there for an enthusiast, but what MS has done has driven off the casual/average user. Those folks won't go looking for a regedit fix, won't do a regedit fix, and in most cases don't feel like they should have to do a regedit fix. Then they will ask you just what the hell regedit is.

Casual users will find start screen better suited to launch desktop applications than the old start menu. The start screen button pops up at exactly the same location where start menu used to be. There's very little learning curve there, if any.

The metro-apps though will throw a curve ball, mostly in terms of learning the search/print/settings options in the charms menu, but that's a different issue. The start-screen itself is just a better start menu.

Most casual users would have a bunch of desktop icons any way (from installing applications), and will not use start menu or start screen in the first place.

It's incredible how much the lack of start-menu has been mourned by some, when it was one of the most useless parts of the OS, at least in the way it was designed.

The point of the article is that, at least according to some the hardware manufacturers, the casual/average user is *not* finding Win 8 better suited to anything and are thus leaving to something else they do find familiar. While your opinion may be that the casual/average user should find it easier than the start menu, the article seems to indicate that this is not the case. Sales have been weak, the manufacturers are complaining, and Apple continues to increase it's own PC sales despite changing virtually nothing about the products.

Heck, you may even be right...it might very well be easier in some sense. I myself tend to agree that Win 8 is pretty damn easy to use, but that point is irrelevant to the larger problem. People don't like different. It looks different, they go find something that looks familiar. I am not sure why people keep argueing over whether Windows 8 is a "good" OS, or if the start menu being gone is a "good" thing. It is irrelevant. The mainstream (and more importantly the business sector) seems to be saying they don't like it and, at least according to this article and various others that have been popping up over the last 6 months, the manufacturers that provide Windows hardware are starting to get even more anxious than they were when Stevie B and crew first started pushing it.

Again, as enthusiasts, I don't see how any of us could possibly be surprised by any of this. Look at the Windows Phone. You could make a strong case that the mobile OS is strong and easy to use. It is however pretty different in appearance to just about everything else out there. People who used Palm back in the day could easily transition to iOS or Android. People who use iOS can transition to Android. Android transitions iOS easily. People can stay loyal or bounce from OS to OS and it doesn't matter. But then we have the Windows Phone...and it's tiles...and people take one look and say "damn, that's weird"..and without even bothering to give it a shot, they move on to something else more familiar. Blackberry is facing the same problem. People who use them don't like it when they change stuff and once they go use something else they don't come back because the competition is easy to use and transitions easily. My mother can use a iOS phone without getting instructions from anyone even though she has owned an Android phone for the last 3 years. Believe me, if you knew my mother and her technophobia you would understand just how big of a statement that is.

The same thing is happening here that has been happening to MS on the phones. Given the choice the mainstream is either staying with what they know (Windows 7/Vista) or going to Apple rather than learning something new....and it was so entirely predictable I am seriously at a loss for why anyone would be surprised or feel a need to defend it.

I disagree with this concept that MS is blameless. They have seen the success of others and instead of building on it they have tried to present the exact same results with a visually and functionally different UI. They made that choice, the results are on them. I do agree that articles that don't specify numbers or sources specifically are ultimately not very useful however.

It is so easy do disable Metro,

go in regedit

go to : HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer

Double-click the key labeled: RPEnabled

then change the value from 1 to 0

and voila !!!

Dont even know why so many people are bitching about windows 8 its the same freaking os than windows 7 (when you reg edit Metro)

That is great stuff there for an enthusiast, but what MS has done has driven off the casual/average user. Those folks won't go looking for a regedit fix, won't do a regedit fix, and in most cases don't feel like they should have to do a regedit fix. Then they will ask you just what the hell regedit is.

The enthusiasts already had their panties bunched. This isn't about them. This is about MS failing at trying to force the mainstream to do things in a different way and the mainstream taking their money and running off to Apple. It says something, it says a lot actually, when the mainstream is willing to pay the Apple premium just to avoid using a Windows OS. Apple is no longer "think different" to the mainstream, it is "why isn't everything this simple".

MS is failing at keeping it simple. Maybe in practice Windows 8 is simple, that doesn't matter if the perception is that it is not. Start telling people they can "regedit" stuff...and the perception is not simple.

People here, on this forum, we know that crap. People keep posting about how you can get rid of Metro as if the readers here don't already know that shit and haven't already known that since before the OS was released. You can regedit this, you can download that...blah blah blah.

My damn grandmother isn't going to do that. She is going to wonder why her computer isn't as easy to use as her smartphone...and then she is going to go buy a computer made by the same people who made her smartphone. Kinda like the article attached to this thread says is happening.

Whudda thunk? Oh wait...everyone. Except Stevie B...apparently.

Everybody has already hit on my biggest complaints. Re-releasing the same game 3 or 4 times in 5 years is always a bad idea. On disc DLC is generally a bad idea. Making games nobody asked for (Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles and Devil May Cry: Emo Edition) wasn't a great idea either.

Dragon's Dogma, good idea. Marvel vs Capcom being brought back, good idea. Find a way to develop actual gameplay enhancing CONTENT for your games to sell as DLC rather than "OMG SKINZ"....that would probably help as well.

Capcom just seems to be struggling to adapt. Perhaps some changes high up the food chain would help with that.

What a great next year or two for sci-fi and superhero movies. After Earth and Oblivion both look good to me. I know I am in the minority here but I am very much looking forward to the next Star Trek movie. Marvel release schedule over the next 3 years looks fantastic to this fan boy as well. As for Superman, well, I am trying very hard to set my expectations very low but I have to admit the trailers look great. The soundtrack sounds amazing as well. I can only hope that a well made and successful Superman movie leads to more DC movies.

My inner cynic keeps telling me that all of these movies are going to fall flat, the fan boy is forever hopeful.

I didn't watch the premiere of Defiance but in my experience sci-fi television shows rarely start off well. They take awhile to find their groove usually. (X-Files, every Star Trek series ever, Babylon 5, etc) It wouldn't surprise me if this show faced the same issue, particularly given the added element of the parallel game world.

Yes this is the MMO that succeeded in being very different from WoW. And on that alone, it's worth trying.

Yeah, it is a great break from the norm. I like the investigative nature of the gameplay myself and now that it is B2P (like GW2) rather than B2P+subscription (like WoW), it is easy to pop in and out whenever I get the itch.

As terrible as this is I did notice in the replays of the explosion a tremendous amount of people, police and private citizens, running toward the detonation area to help. There are some fucked up and dark people in the world but even when they manage to show their fangs to the greater population it is somewhat reassuring to see even the non-obligated and scared rushing to help those in need.

Best wishes to anyone in the Boston area or those that have loved ones there.

Travel. See the shitty parts of the world that are a result of US imperialism and you'll get a much better idea. It's not like these people just wake up one day and decide they're going to go bomb the US because they're bored.

Yep it's the US fault the world hates us, yet asks for us to step in anytime anything happens anywhere in the world.

Well, I mean, the billions annually we paid dictatorships in the middle east really worked out well for us and is certainly something the people demanded.

Including all the money handed to the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt. We're funding our own enemies at this point. Still though, who's the first country called when shit goes down? It sure as shit ain't France.

Sure, but maybe we ought to stop answering the phone. Or at least start screening the calls.

Rigs, -10 million gamer cred points.

No but seriously, the TES games obviously aren't for everyone...even if Bethesda seems to be to be trying harder and harder with each passing game to make them that way. They often have weird glitches, particularly at launch, and because they are so "free" with questing and progression some people find the game easy to get distracted from.

I loved Arena and Daggerfall, despite all of their glitches. I played Morrowind but never finished it and consider it the least interesting of the games....which puts me in the smallest minority of TES fans as most long time fans consider Morrowind the peak of the franchise currently. I played Oblivion all the way through but had much more fun modding it then playing it. Skyrim is the first game in the series where I have enjoyed playing it as a game as much as I have enjoyed the modding scene. It has entertained me for 500+ hours according to my Steam page. Well worth the 50+ dollars I spent on it.

Sine Mora for PS Vita is my current time killer of choice. Think R-Type with steampunk elements and a 3D environment. At 2.50 for PC it is a steal. If anyone has played Söldner-X: Himmelsstürmer or Söldner-X 2: Final Prototype it has similarities to those more modern horizontal shooters as well. Many more varieties of aircraft, pilots and weaponry however. The storyline isn't so bad either and it is presented well.

News Comments > EA Layoffs
25. Re: EA Layoffs Apr 12, 2013, 20:34 Jivaro

Since we are sharing firing/layoff stories...

You haven't truly lived until you, the store manager of a Fortune 500 company's retail store, arrive at your workplace to find a bunch of guys putting black plastic in the windows of your store and a HR representative hands you a stack of severance packages. No warning, no courtesy call, just "Hi, I am HR Rep #340 and today you are going to fire your entire staff. Don't worry though, we have another store we want you to take over, so your job is safe. Now if you'll excuse me, these things tend to depress me so I am just going to let you handle this. Call me if you have questions." (seriously, that was basically the conversation in the parking lot outside the store)

As if knowing that you still have a job makes one feel better. Made me feel like even more of an asshole. Fucking sucked. After a horrible day of telling 30 something people they were fired and convincing them to spend the next 7 miserable days closing the store so that they could "receive all of the benefits they are entitled to under the terms of the severance package", I decided that my tenure in retail was going to end sooner rather than later and left retail 2 years later.

I don't know how many good ways there are to go about firing people who haven't done anything wrong, but I do know that there are classier ways. It made me feel like a true asshole to have to participate in that process. All of the people that I fired that day had spent the last 3 months working the single most profitable company store in the country. In a bit of cruel irony, two days beforehand the store was given an award by the CFO based on profitability. I was told later that the decision to close the store was based on the numbers previous to my arrival. (I took over 4 months before closure) Which of course means I got transferred to a store they knew they were going to close which sucks for all sorts of reasons but mainly because my job up until that point had been to "fix" problem stores. Never had anyone ever told me that any store was in danger of closing should I run into troubles "fixing" it....let alone succeed at fixing it. Naive of me to not figure that out on my own I guess.

Anyway, yeah, it sucked.

Funny how you only seem to be defend your position by degrading others in some fashion. Your opinion seems to be the only one of worth, people must use their money and play their games as you think they should, and if someone has another opinion or preference not only are they wrong but there is some larger problem in the world they are contributing to by having thinking in that way.

Seriously man, that is so completely loony. It does however explain what I was asking, so thank you for that.

49. Re: Dark Souls PC Apr 12, 2013, 14:59 Jivaro

I just got finished reading this thread, beginning to end...and something jumps out at me. My memory was jogged and I recalled a previous thread regarding Aliens CM.

Darks said:
It is not that I’m defending the game; I’m just getting tired of all the negativity when it comes to pc games in general here at Blues. It’s becoming a routine here listening to whinny assed people bitch about pc games in general when there are not a whole lot of them to go around as it is.

That's you Darks, a while back when I asked why you were defending Aliens:CM so adamantly even though by that time it was quite clear how poor of a game it really had turned out to be at release.

Funny how when it was a game you liked you were "just tired of the negativity", but now it is a game you don't like and people are "console freaks" and you are on the attack, as negative as anyone in the thread.

So which is it? I mean with Aliens:CM we had a game where the developers insisted it was a high quality game. The previews showed footage of graphics and gameplay that didn't even make the final cut. People weren't just angry because the game came up short of expectations (myself included), they were angry because they felt deliberately misled. Here with Dark Souls we had the developers admitting to being a bit lost with the PC port before the game even released. Turns out they were right, and many people (myself included) were pretty uptight about some of the problems. That said, I don't know about you but I prefer the honesty angle. Not only that, I am more likely to believe them now since they owed up to the shortcomings before whereas Gearbox was nearly silent and in some cases defiant.

I do know one thing for certain however. In both situations fans have had to come up with their own solutions to make the games (somewhat) more enjoyable, and in both cases they did. Why? Because they were on a PC and they could. The PC platform is uniquely capable of allowing the gamer to tweak and fiddle with things until they can play the game exactly how they want to. (You as a modder are well aware of this) Whether they are using a controller or modding the game settings or whatever, I have no idea why you would hold that against anyone, regardless of whether you liked their game of choice or not. That freedom, that capability, is what makes the PC the superior platform.

Given all of that, ripping into people for choosing a controller as a matter of personal preference seems to fly in the face of exactly what it means to be a PC gamer. Heck, given what you have said previously in other threads, ripping into someone for simply liking a game you don't, despite it's shortcomings, seems a bit hypocritical.

As for Dark Souls 2, I have enjoyed this franchise since Demons Soul on PS3. I chose not to buy the game on PC because of the porting issues and instead stayed on PS3. I don't pre-order or Day One gaming purchase anything any longer, but I expect that I will be picking up Dark Souls 2 on PC shortly after release unless the initial reviews report yet another crappy console porting job. I really hope it is done well. This is a franchise that was meant to be on PC and I would love a chance at playing with a mouse and keyboard.

EDIT: And yes, I did buy and play Aliens: CM. (Well actually, I bought it for my stepson and played it when he wasn't) And for the record, I didn't find it as bad as the Internet would lead a person to believe, I did find it underwhelming and substandard in many ways...all of which many people have already beaten with a stick, so I don't need to. Bums me out that this franchise has so much trouble with the video game market.
