Shocking.
Shocking how much hype there is about this mediocre game. As with Bioshock a few years ago, the one-eyed is king amongst the blind. Its a sad fact, that a mediocre (not bad, but not THAT good) shooter like Bioshock is indeed the pinnacle of the shooter genre in our days.

Bioshock Infinite isn't really a pure shooter though, it is one of those genre bending games that make traditional comparisons like yours meaningless. To call this game mediocre because the shooting isn't like Quake or something is just wrong. Unlike most games which forget that the gameplay is supposed to be in service to something, Bioshock Infinite propels you through a very compelling story with fantastic characters.

The gameplay on its own is slightly above average but as a total package the game delivers and that's what matters in the end.

But it is a shooter and if the shooting doesn't feel good then it ultimately fails in that respect.
Again, I have not played the game, I just read about it and I watched TotalBiscuit's WTF where he talks a lot about the shooting and just watching the video made me not want to play the game.
About whether the world is beautifully designed or not I do not care much since these things do not interest me, I am not someone who can appreciate visual art that well. So what would interest me would be other things and shooting is definitely one of them and watching that video made me want to play something like Painkiller because this is a game that has really good shooting.
Genre bending or not, it is still, even partly, a shooter and if everything is absolutely fantastic except the shooting then it's not an absolutely fantastic game.

For me bioshock infinite plot is a masterpiece of writing. Everything in the game is so chalk full of meaning which the designers actually intended and you don't have to read into it to discover it.

This is the one thing I am curious about. I did not play the game but I read (about) the plot because I was curious since everyone praised it so much and I wasn't impressed actually.
The plot is above average, especially for a shooter, but it's actually not that great and deals with the same fantasy rubbish as other plots of that genre. :/
I am talking, of course, about the overall plot synopsis, i.e. the gist of the story. I have no idea about how the characters interact with each other.

Hey, look, Beamer being an idiot. Again!

After having read the posts so far I am rather shocked to say that Beamer is correct in his observations.

Shocked not in the sense that cisgendered males act as expected but by how much this applies to this discussion.

Man, I gotta play Precursors.
I played for what... 2 hours? And spent most of those just talking to everyone at the city. I was kinda put off by how unpolished it is, though.
Don't get me wrong, I was used to this kind of thing from playing a lot of Boiling Point but Precursors was actually worse in that respect.

Ah, sorry again, what I meant to write was that I never played it in multiplayer but I did actually play the game. I remember that this was the game I bought my only joystick for, which I still have. Unfortunately it is collecting dust at the moment but I've been eyeying a Saitek X 52 althought I am not really sure what I would use it for.

At least I think I played this game. This was the one were you piloted this YT-1300 or something, correct?

Don't know whether people play today but for the longest time there was a 32 player CTF server for Jedi Outcast called "[united] Courscant", I think.
Maybe it is still around? Have not played JO in many years. It was really great fun back then.
And in 2002/2003 I also only had a 56k modem and multiplayer was still great although people tended to kick me from the server for having a 300/400 ms ping.

Why hasn't there been a new Jedi SOMETHING game in a while? Outcast and Academy were AWESOME games. Too many good times in multiplayer duel deathmatch. It was awesome fighting or even spectating those matches.
[...]

I can agree with the "fighting" part, however watching most of these matches was dreadful because at a higher skill level the fights consisted of the opponents circling each other and going backwards and forwards the whole time. Then they would swing their swords and hope that they managed to land a hit and that would go and on and on and on...

Still, a Jedi Knight 3 would be phenomenal, although it would lose a lot of its charm because it wouldn't use the Quake 3 engine anymore.
I think LucasArts decided that they'd rather release The Force Unleashed, which looked interesting back when I first saw it on Giga Games in... 2004? 2005?
Anyway, the game itself was dreadful, just awful and not fun in any way. There were also too many quick time events.
But that's probably why there will be no new Jedi Knight. It seems that they just abandoned a series in favour of something that is similar but ultimately less interesting.

Good, maybe now people can do what Raven absolutely failed to, that is fix the absolute mess that was Jedi Academy.
While the single player was okay, nothing to home about, the multiplayer was just full of bugs, clipping issues and imbalances.
The special moves which you could do with the double-bladed saber or two sabres could take away up to 190 health points which was ridiculous.
Loved the JK2 multiplayer but JKA was lacking.

Hopefully someone else will make Jedi Knight 3, Republic Commando 2 and Knights of the old Republic 3 then, but I doubt it.

[edit]
Yes I know that LucasArts only published them and that JK2/JKA were made by Raven and KOTOR by Obsidian/Bioware and so on.

I really liked the setting and the world of the second game (didn't play the first one), though the combat could have been a bit better.
So hopefully we'll see a sequel some day.

I think that at the end of the video he says that it's coming this summer and it will be released on GOG, Steam and the Apogee store (I did not know that such a thing existed) for 14.99 which sounds like a really good deal to me.

Wasn't there also a baseball game on the PC in which you actually played the game (i.e. not a simulation)?
I remember playing something like that in the mid/late 90s. Tried to find it a few months ago actually but had no luck.

The visual history of Linux was a bit disappointing because they just concentrated on the mostly used Desktop Environments, i.e. KDE and Gnome.
There are many other interesting ones like e17.
They didn't even mention stuff like compiz.

Yeah, I have to say that, for someone who occasionally plays Warsow or other Twitch Shooters), it looks a bit too frantic/fast.
Though that is most likely just a habit thing. Play a couple of rounds and it will all come back to you.

I enjoyed the missions that were literally on rails more than the attack chopper ones. In SR2 the attack chopper missions were horrendous. In SR3 they were much easier, and I don't think you ever had to start from scratch like you did in SR2, if you accidentally got stuck on power lines. Hell, at least that beat SR1, where sometimes restarting a mission meant having to drive to it again.

The on-rails ones, though. Don't know why, but I enjoyed the missions when someone else drove the car or flew the helicopter and you just shot.

Yeah, I agree. The attack chopper missions in SR3 were much, much more fun than they were in SR2.

I think the most enjoyable side missions for me where the insurance fraud ones, those were great fun. It was really kinda difficult to learn but once you got the hang of them it was super easy.
Of course you needed a good spot and sometimes no cars would come for half a minute which was infuriating.

I enjoyed the spray shit missions more than the missions where you flew around in the attack helicopter and had to escort some gang members.

Seriously, stop it. Escort mission are NOT fun. Not in any shape or form, not in any game. NEVER. I have never seen an interesting escort mission. If devs would actually bother to implement a decent companion AI so they don't behave like braindead idiots then it would be fine.
Or do what Valve did and make it scripted as hell, i.e. episode 2. Running around with Alyx and killing stuff was actually enjoyable in that game but on the other hand she was invincible if I remember correctly so it was not an escort mission anyway.

The character customisation in Saints Row 3 was pretty disappointing, I agree. I didn't even understand why they changed it that much. Why limit the player in such a way?
It was likewise disappointing that they didn't include an option to import your character from the previous game.

Saints Row 2's port was bad but it was actually more playable than other games. I found the first Borderlands unplayable, and Darksiders 2 didn't even run fluidly if not in windowed mode so the SR2 port could have been worse. It really was an awesome game.
Though I probably have to rewatch the cutscenes on youtube because I have the crappy German version where everything is censored.
I think the only cutscene that didn't have any censorship in it was where you were with Johnny at the graveyard.

Saints Row 4 is a game that I will definitely buy, though.

Reading the review on RPS made me even less enthusiastic about Bioshock. To me it doesn't sound like a good game.
Oh well, that much was apparent in the preview videos. :/
