I don't have anyone blocked either. There are good topics/discussions where I find a lot of peoples' posts interesting, informative, and enlightening. There are obviously some very knowledgeable people here that I learn something from time to time.

There are some consistent trolls, but the majority of the posters here are cool. I know I've had my rants and stupid posts, but haven't we all? Hmmmmmmm, I wonder if I'm on anyone's blocked list Thinking

Man Matrix was a fucking brilliant piece of filmaking. I watched it on DVD and somehow missed all the brouahaha about the movie, so when I did finaly watch it it really blew my mind. Awesome movie, that should have been left as-is. The sequels were godawful.

I could tolerate the second one, though it was clearly a step down. But I hated the 3rd one.

Yes, agreed. The third one was just torture to watch to the point where you were thankful it was the last sequel.

That is why I used the words 'most likely'. Not definite, not for sure, but possibly or probably (most likely).

2. Re: Thief (Review) Mar 2, 2014, 14:09 MajorD

Speaking of Thief. Some were interested in some reviews from Blue's Newsers, so here you go.

Likes:

  • Seeing your own character animations when you look down, mantling, sneaking, peering, climbing, etc. gives a more sense of immersion.

  • Character textures and animations are really nice.

  • Map/Level designs are nice, even though they're so small.

  • Player stats at the end of each level is nice.

  • The broad range of UI settings is nice, but at the end of the day it is just parsley on the dinner plate with the game lacking in so many different ways.

  • Dislikes:

  • PISS POOR optimization. I am no game engine expert here, so can someone explain to me why I can play other games that use the Unreal 2.5 and 3.0 Engines, with even better textures/graphics, run all settings at their max, and play silky smooth? The game obviously wasn’t going to be optimized in time of the scheduled release date, which is why the system requirements were much higher than we all expected them to be or should have been.

  • No manual jumping is downright lame! The developer and fan boys can spin it, slice it, and sell it any way they want, but no manual jumping is downright absurd and lazy development.

  • The opening/training level was really bad and gimmicky.

  • I couldn’t even fall off and/or intentionally jump off any beams or catwalks if I tried. Seriously?

Poor QA resulting in bad continuity: Some of the cut scenes were in higher resolutions than some of the others. I’ll have to go back and look, but I believe some or all of the early cut scenes Garret’s eyes were both the same color, but later on in the game (after the opening/training level), one eye was green (mechanical?) and the other was brown.

    Erin was/is annoying.

  • Too many cut scenes/QTEs. Just when I start getting immersed into the game, it is broken by a cut scene/QTE. Good God, they said they removed QTEs? I'd hate to see what the game would have been like if they hadn't.

  • Not being able to read something on the fly when I pick it up and having to hit F1 for my journal and cycle through the menu to read what I just picked up is a serious immersion breaker. The player should be able to read what they pick up right there on the fly, and then go to journal later to read it again if need be.

  • The maps in each level seemed to be broken up into small sections that are interconnected via loading screens that breaks the continuity. Good god, this is 2014! I just remember playing Thief Gold and wandering around in these levels that seemed to go on forever, and that ran on the Dark Engine developed in 1998. I don’t know, the map sizes just seem to be a step backwards in size comparison.

  • Most NPCs throughout the game just seem like set pieces that you can’t even interact with to give ‘some’ sense of immersion.

  • Key bindings for KB & M suffer from consolitis and not very well thought out.

  • Overall thoughts:

I went into this game with an open mind, I really did, but when all these different annoyances reared their ugly heads throughout the game play, it was hard not to be disappointed.

There are some really good things and some really bad things with this latest release of Thief. The game had a lot of potential, but the game didn’t reach the full potential that it could have due to bad development decisions, lazy design, poor game optimization, and too much artistic license. Overall, I'm not very impressed with the development team.

This game is just ‘okay’ on its own, but most likely it will be a major let down for the all true fans of the original two.

Yeah I love all the old adventure pulps and serials so this sort of thing is right up my alley...except that all the reviews say it's pretty bad. I have too much on my plate atm anyway so I'll bite when it's bargain bin - probably the Xmas sale.

I just put a couple hours into it; it's not too bad I must say. Not great, but entertaining. Indiana Jones-ish, with decent balance of puzzles, combat, exploration, etc. Character textures and animation is decent, level designs/environments are pretty cool, it plays very smooth. MUCH more optimized than Thief (4), which is an F'ing PIG in that department.

IMHO, it is worth downloading and playing during the 2 day 'Free Weekend'.

You keep sayig that about Thief. Maybe you're forgetting that Thief actually looks pretty gorgeous? Just saying. Also, the game runs as smooth as butter on my 2 year old rig so maybe it's on your end.

Keep saying? You may be mistaking me for someone else, as I believe that was the first time I 'posted' how poorly Thief 4 runs, but I am not the only one that has stated that complaint.

Regardless, in comparison to other games that use the Unreal 2.5/3.0 Engine, Thief seems 'very' poorly optimized in comparison. For example, I can crank every video setting to maximum settings in Splinter Cell: Black List, and it runs smooth as silk and looks incredible ('much' better than Thief in comparison). But, if I try the same thing with Thief it chokes. Thief just wasn't optimized well, but if it is running well for you, that's good for you.

I've been looking at this game on and off since its release, but haven't pulled the trigger. It looks like it could be fun, but kinda cheesy too. There seems to be mixed review, but regardless, the free weekend is already under way, so I might as well give it a whirl. DL now....

The first 30 to 40 minutes I was very skeptical for a number of reasons, but kept an open mind. It wasn't until I got past the opening/training level that I finally started to enjoy the game. For those Taffers that were interested in reading Blue's News poster's reviews, I will post a more detail review after I put another hour or so into it.

I don't remember Thief 3 being well-received by purists at all. They hated the (optional) third-person camera, the removal of the rope arrow, the smaller levels, the new item glint, the lockpicking changes, the fact that the game was developed for consoles, etc. The only positive thing I hear purists say about Thief 3 is about the Shalebridge Cradle level.

I'd have to agree; you're pretty much spot on there Jerykk.

IMO, T3:DS was the worst one, and I 'predict' Thief 4 may be better than T3:DS was and/or wanted to be.

I remember Quake being the first FPS with free-look, but you had to hold a key down. So, I used a cap from a Bic pen and wedged the tip of it between the key that was bound to free-look and another key so free-look was on all the time.

There have been times that friends/family and the media (reviewers), have commented on how much they disliked a movie, but when I saw it I ended up liking it, or ones they really liked I thought sucked. I found this to 'sometimes' hold true with video games as well.

I'll have to formulate my own opinions come tomorrow, which I will share, but either way, the game was a gift from my friend so I'm not out any money.

My goal is to go into it with an open mind and not compare it to Thief 1 or Thief 2. If I do that, then I suspect it will be a descent title on its own. Time will tell.......

I've been playing Rust on and off for a couple months now, and I finally started to enjoy it when I finally found a couple/few servers (w/o too many people and/or cheaters). I do understand it is still Alpha, and w/o reading all the forums and such, I'm starting to wonder the direction the development is going. I wonder this because once you gather resources to survive, build, etc., and you're essentially up and running (for a lack of better terms), then what? PVP, help or take advantage of new players logging that are trying to survive, group-up with other people and build your own fortress/town, and defend it? This is where the rest of the development will be important, because if there isn't enough content and/or objectives to keep it interesting, then it will just turn into an annoying PVP, griefing, hack-fest of a game that nobody will want to play much of.

That Verizon story is infuriating. Verizon gets paid by it's subscribers. Trying to milk the other end is just plain greed. This is only possible due to the utter lack of competition. The gov't needs to step in and regulate that shit, stat.

Agreed. For the past several months or so I've been tracking these stories of the different ISPs pulling this crap, and ironically, I've been noticing my Netflix streaming quality diminish too.

The consumers are pretty much screwed right now because there is not enough competition and not enough infrastructure to support more competition. It will be a long time until I see Google Fiber in my area.

Hopefully the government will step in to enforce 'Internet Neutrality'. It is going to interesting to see how this all plays out, and frustrating for us consumers at the same time.
