All the debate aside, I'd say criticism on Valve saying the game could be 'released early' through community efforts has some validity.
Yes, releasing it a few hours ahead of schedule can be considered 'early' in the strictest sense of the word, but to the average person, and more importantly-to the average gamer, a early release constitutes at least a one day difference. Valve's wording here can be seen as misleading at best.
With 7 of the 13 games completed, and the projected release date still hovering around midnight on Tuesday, and the fact it is now almost Monday, it seems very unlikely that completing the rest of the games will result in the game being released significantly earlier.
The gist of it all is, Valve should have started this promotion LAST week, it would have still given the Indie games some spotlight, while giving gamers a decent time frame to actually work for a SIGNIFICANT early release of Portal 2.
TLDR: A few hours difference is not (really) an early release. |

Lies, the game ran horribly on my GTX260, it was just not optimized well for the PC platform. |

Agreed, the PC port has absolutely terrible performance for average graphics. |

Almost but not quite, it depends on what the injunction states Hotz must, or must not do from now on - if he violates those terms he may suffer civil/criminal penalties. My guess is that he basically can't release/help work on new cracks for the PS3. |

| I hope this is true, Gothic 2 was my favorite of the series. 1 was great, but there was a lot of improvements everywhere in the second that everything just came together really nicely. 3 had potential, but the bugs and everything really marred the experience-someday I'll try and play it again with the community patches. |

And to those who say it has nothing to do with the first game, what are you basing that on? The first was basically just aliens and portals, and this looks like: aliens and maybe no portal but with a bigger scope.
Seriously, if portals don't make the cut I won't shed a tear, they didn't do much for the original game anyways. |

Definitely not a true mech game. Any mech game can be classified that way.
If creating mech builds and what not is how you would further classify it as a mech game, then you should know there was talk of that being a possibility. Well, (for better or for worse) classic mech games usually do have their own unique, and often more challenging, control scheme. And then there are things like radar management, subsystem and limb specific damage, a more configurable and extensive amount of weapons, etc etc.
I'm not debating that this isn't a mech game, and some of these things may make it into the final game like you said, I just wished they'd gone more into that route than following the usual FPS mold.
Still, looking forward to it and what modders can add on as well. |

Sounds good, reminds me of the Resident Evil Outbreak games, but this time with a bigger audience and more accessiblity.
And there's no reason why they couldn't put some puzzles in the levels, in fact solving things as a team could be loads of fun (And better than what a SP RE game could offer if done right.) |

As much shit as Broussard gets for being a lazy prick, at least he knew how to make a fun game. Here we have a bunch of prima-donnas trying to reinvent the wheel. Mirrors Edge? ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME??!!
Die HH, just die. The original Prey was made by Humanhead, might I remind you.
That said, there's nothing wrong with them being inspired by other games, the first Prey wasn't that great except for the portals and shifting gravity, and even those things didn't make the game all the awesome either. |

An Air Martial? What are we going to do...bust someone for smoking on the plane? Why can't we be someone more dangerous like an accountant or attorney? 3D Realms weren't involved in the development of Prey (at least not in the product that was actually released) and neither are they with this one. I don't even think they owned the IP anymore after the first.

Now if they only make the portals player controllable for Prey 2 like they were originally supposed to for the first one that would be great. |

Horrible Idea, this is Freespace, not Battlefield - obviously you've never played a Freespace game, otherwise you'd know why this would never fly.
Implementing a on the ground FPS element to FS would be like adding a FPS mode to Starcraft; completely irrelevant and taking away from the game's core strengths. |

| It's so sad that games like these have almost completely dropped off of the gaming scene in favor of other, often droll and derivative, shooters and third person action games. Such is the curse of an industry that has gotten so large that it no longer can afford to create titles for popular, if slightly niche, markets. |

You're wrong. Techdemos don't have gameplay, their sole purpose is to show the technical feasibility of a idea, or to draw in interest. They might have segments that look like gameplay, but they're not actually player controlled.
Project Offset had actual gameplay in it, so no, it wasn't just a tech demo. See: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FpdPWVfaBQs That's a lot of gameplay for a tech demo don't you think?
Too bad it was canceled, I was looking forward to it. |

| Why exactly is COD:BO an awarding winning game? It looks like every other single COD game before it, well perhaps they have improved since COD4, but still, the series has done absolutely nothing innovative except drive the industry further down the festering, uncreative stink hole of 'realistic' and 'gritty' FPS shooters. |

Consoles exist in their current state mainly due to PCs, I doubt the current generation of consoles would have been as advanced as they are now if there wasn't the huge push and demand for rapidly improving 3D graphics on computers that there was back then and still is now.
And well, lets face it, if you buy a console, you kind of are stuck in the past, because there is no serious way to upgrade its performance. |

Merging with Activision was one of the worst things Blizzard could have done, and now Activision is hard at work destroying the fan support and loyalty that Blizzard has rightly deserved, until now at least.
Starcraft will sell, for sure, but it's hardly revolutionary, or even innovative. And all this bullshit about RealID, Battlenet 2.0 impotency, and everything else they are doing to try and milk the series for every last penny will deal a major blow to their credibility, and ultimately their bottom line.
Well, I guess that's what happens when you sell out. |
