What if the Curiosity cube prize is to make a game with the help of Molyneux?

Hilarious. US, the birthplace of SOPA, PIPA and ACTA want to impose sanctions on another country for internet censorship?

Irony at its best.

News Comments > Elite: Dangerous Art
9. Re: Out of the Blue Nov 9, 2012, 13:46 ASeven

Taken from here:

Copied from my EG postÖÖ

I love elite, but I want to raise some concerns about this kickstarter and the company behind it.

Itís been in development for over 10 years (14 years at present), like duke nukem forever.
It is being made by a proper commercial entity, like duke nukem forever.
The company has produced a couple of good hits (lost winds) amongst a sea of mediocrity (generic kinect stuff), like duke nukem forevers parent company.

There are no screenshots, concept art or any assets at all. Unlike Duke nukem Forever, which did have concept art and a trailer video.

As it stands at the moment itís on course to be even more vapour like than DNF. Itís already past the same timescale.
Ask yourself, why would a company that has been around for years suddenly need money upfront without proof of anything. Especially, after promising the game from as far back as 1998.

http://uk.gamespot.com/news/qanda-david-braben-from-elite-to-today-6162140

This is a cash grab to keep the studio going for a few more months. Traded on the back of a promise, looking at nostalgia.

The company accounts show that from 2009 they have blown through almost £5m in 2 years (down to £1m) and at that rate will be bankrupt by next year.
The shares have dropped £4m in a year. And the liabilities have more than doubled.

This £1.2m kickstarter is to make sure they can get through to the next financial year. Nothing more. The expected delivery date is AFTER they have run out of cash even with kickstarter backing.

http://companycheck.co.uk/company/02892559

Most damning of all their last game (announced 2008) has yet to materialise. Beyond a trailer from a few years back.

I really do want to be proven wrong as Iíd love another elite, but Iím afraid the writing is on the wall. This will most likely be a high profile kickstarter failure. And the collapse of a company to boot.

Gamespot review has now been pulled. Wow. It was so bad even Gamespot did the unthinkable, pull a review.

Someone please save the review for posterity. Such terrible reviews are rare to come by.

When you surrender your rights by being a criminal you don't have anymore say. Particularly as it applies to violent crimes like rape, murder, etc. Honestly those guys should consider themselves lucky because if it were up to me they'd be looking at a death sentence.

Here's the problem, urinating in public in California makes you a sex offender. Wish I was kidding. So people who pee in public are barred from anonymous speech as well.

The problem is that this offering isn't free: it costs 30 bucks.

Well that about sums it up, in the very first paragraph he gets the price of the game wrong.

Not only that but there's the implication he wanted this for free. Worse, he doesn't think this game is worth any money.

Wonder what this means to Bioware. I got a feeling their whole existence is riding on the success of DA3.

Also, read Gamespot's review for this game. I rank it on top 5 in the list of worst reviews ever made. Factual incorrect, full of golden nuggets like "Part of the reason it's difficult is that the game is well balanced", it has it all! It's one of the most hilarious reviews out there for all the wrong reasons.

On one hand, D3 sold 10M units and helped prop the revenues for Activision in a major way. PC gaming dead and all that.

On the other hand, D3 sold 10M which is a terrible precedent for a mediocre game with always-online DRM.

In this case, a 47% crash is only $1.40, so it's not quite as dramatic as the percentage would suggest. Still, I'd be surprised if THQ survives into 2014.

Well, THQ is currently worth about $11 million, which is a third of the budget of one of their games, give or take a few.

This is bad.

47% crash. Good grief, investors are jumping ship and from what I'm reading and hearing, some of the higher management at THQ too.

Apparently the CEO wants to put THQ for sale.

I remember hearing a while back (maybe on the Giant Bombcast) that THQ's been quietly up for sale for a long time now but no one's interested in the company (and their debt), just the IPs and maybe a couple of the studios. At the rate things are going, those parties can just wait until they're bankrupt and get them for practically nothing. Some people on the SaveTHQ.com forums are also speculating that they'll get scooped up by a private equity firm which likely means the games in development will come out, they'll take most of those profits and then cut the company up and sell it off.

The conference call was very eye-opening. Not only what wasn't said (refusal to answer analyst questions) more important than what was said, he left a very strong hint that he would put THQ for sale in a more public way.

The selling to a private equity firm is also a very strong possibility indeed. Either way I fear that THQ won't last more than a year, it's in its final death gasps. The conference call yesterday was unfortunately one I heard too many times, a call of a company that is about to die and the CEO knows it. I think it will take more than a miracle to save THQ now.

BTW, THQ stocks are crashing almost 50% today. 50%. It's over.
