Exactly. If you think about it, 9 figures for a videogame is insane. It's a game, not a Hollywood mega-production to have 9 figures. However it's been proven that indies can attain 7 figures if the idea is right, from KSs to projects like Minecraft. And an indie can do a lot more with 7 figures than most publishers with 9. |

Considering the number of successful kickstarters recently I'd say you don't need a 9 figure to make a great game. See: Grimrock, Frozen Synapse, any good indie. Keep on dreaming a good game needs 9 figures. Ok, seriously? You really need to stop letting your dislike of Beamer blind you, because that was a remarkably stupid thing to say. No one is denying that you can have great indie games, but he's absolutely correct that you wouldn't have a massive game like Skyrim made that way. And that's not even mentioning that what you list are PC games, when there's no PC exclusive games on the top ten list, and quite a few non-PC exclusives. There's a good reason that kickstarter isn't funding any major console projects.
Publishers still have a significant role in gaming at present, and that isn't going away any time soon. I am not denying that nor did I actually say anything like that. I said you don't need 9 figures to make a great game and that is true, I didn't say they could make games to the level of Skyrim, not yet anyway.
One of the major problems right now, one which is especially hitting the console revenues hard, is the lack of a middle ground, of $20 and $30 type of games. Today, at least on the consoles, you only see cheap XBLA games or full on $60 AAA games, no middle ground. That is something that may cost publishers dearly in the future. Why? People do not have infinite disposable income and that means that working people who own a console or who have kids who own one won't be able to spend a lot on games. This lack of middle-ground really hits revenue hard because it puts console gamers with two choices, AAA or XBLA, if they go XBLA they get nice games for a cheap price but it'll be rare to have a XBLA type of game that can really fulfill the wishes of console gamers, on the other hand with AAA games prices being so high they'll be forced to buy one or two per month, maybe three. This is happening now, is an economic reality and is one of my basis for the publishers crash. They aren't diversifying on console games, they keep on publishing the same IPs recycled every year and they keep pricing the games high. With publishers all moving to these AAA level of prices it means the opportunity they had on banking with games at a $30 pricepoint is gone and that would bring in a lot of revenue for them since that price point seems to be rather elastic.
In short, indies cannot produce yet Skyrim games with that breadth but the demise of middle ground prices on consoles is hurting publishers a lot, PC gaming is gaining a lot because it has tons of those games well made and that means slowly some indie devs are getting enough revenue from those games for PC gaming to start seeing more vast indie productions in the future. |

For the record, it really was only Megaupload (and possibly rapidshare, we'll see) that people here defended taking down. And why not? When even the employees claimed that they only get rich through piracy and the CEO has the license plate "pirate"... I'm sorry but the MPAA and RIAA disagree with you concerning hotfile, which they consider as bad as Megaupload. And nevermind all the blunders committed lately on MU, they're pretty much handing the case verdict to Kim. |

But having said that, I think this could add an interesting level of strategy, but I wonder... at what point would you rather block than attack? When the enemy attacks kill you before you can kill the enemy? Isn't that kind of obvious? You have two people in the back row who can still DPS while shields up front tank. You can put spears in the back people and they will attack normally, but only with spears. Also rogues can develop a skill that allows them to attack from the back normally as if they were in the front. |

Beamer wrote on Apr 13, 2012, 11:31: ASeven doesn't get what a cycle is, does he?
Hints: it revolves around console releases (Vita is not a console) and it doesn't change from month to month.
But it's ok, keep cheering the demise of major publishers. We don't like playing Skyrim, anyway, so let's pray that the only method of funding it gets destroyed! We can kickstart nine figures, right? Yeap, I've said it and here it is, the usual industry apologist who seems not to have a single clue about the economic concept of cycles chimes in. You seriously trying to teach my own job, Beamer?
It's obvious you have no idea what a cycle means, that's for sure. An economic cycle is defined by small variance in the ups and downs of an industry. 29%, 35% and 26% is anything but small variance. Hell even most other analysts in this industry have started to realize that, even hated Pachter. But no, Beamer in his infinite apologist wisdom still thinks he can understand what an economic cycle is despite this being everything but. Let me guess, you also define the Great Depression as a normal cycle, right? Here's a hint: It wasn't, same as this.
Stick to what you know, defending a dying industry, and stay out of trying to make sense of economic data you clearly have no grasp on. Keep on being blind, deaf and dumb, it'll help you a lot. I'll be here to laugh at you when the shit really hits the fan.
EDIT: I also love how you keep disregarding what I keep telling in each reply about the new console cycle. It will not impress gamers who think the current consoles are more than enough, add to it the rumored lockdown of used sales and you have a disaster waiting to happen. Then again, Sony hurting $6B will ensure a top of the line console will come out! Oh wait, no it won't, they're bleeding money and close to bankruptcy. Ah well keep living in your fairy apologist world Beamer. Like I've said, you may not be a shill but you sure were born a natural one. |

Anyways, the development costs of the game have now been covered many times over so the future of the company seems pretty secure. So, everyone who has bought our game and supported us, you have our gratitude! Fuckin awesome! I was little worried after their "going gold" comment about living homeless...
These guys deserve all the success this game gets. I'm honestly thinking this will be easily my GOTY and with modtools and custom levels this will only get better and better.

Right, and people still claim this to be a cycle. 29% drop in January, 35% in February now 26% in March despite having more games released in this month than the average, including ME3. Hardware was even worse despite Vita and 3DS.
Dark clouds are over the mainstream segment of this industry and only a fool will deny them. When for the first time a CoD title sees sales slumping down drastically only 3 months after release then it means retail sales for consoles are close to crumbling. Hell, most software retailers are gone, Game, Best Buy, even Gamestop is now being target of rumors about its dire financial state.
But ah well, I'm sure the same people will keep on saying everything's ok, it's a cycle, etc. Will be fun to see them explain the now almost inevitable publishers crash. |

More than likely this was some relatively new art dev working for the studio that's making the game who's just not imaginative enough to come up with some original designs. And as a huge, wealthy business don't they have, you know, people who edit stuff before it comes out to the public? It is their obligation, especially their legal teams, to make sure nothing made by their inhouse people infringes anything. These pictures are so blatantly infringing when I first saw them I thought it was a new WH40K and then I read the headlines. |

Orogogus wrote on Apr 12, 2012, 14:00: From what I call of the BGG furor, they were hosting a lot of files, which put together as a whole pretty much obviated the need for ever buying the game if you had a printer. GW sent a notice that BGG was in violation, without specifying what exactly was in violation of what, and in response BGG nuked everything. Fandom went apeshit, life went on. As a long timer BGGer I can say that the files were player aids, totally harmless. There were a few files that were infringing but most of them were plain player aids to help people understand better the game, many of them original works by the fans.
You underestimate the furor it caused, to this day most people there refuse to buy anything GW and many passed on the priceless Space Hulk remake. It pretty much changed the people at BGG, especially those who spent months doing player aids that weren't infringing in any way possible. |

Who else found the secret room right at the first room when you start playing the game? Speaking of spoilers:
The room with the pressure plate in the middle was obviously a trap, but who else was surprised when it turned out to be 4 of the skeleton warriors. Before that, the game was pretty easy. Actually there's quite some neat loot in that room. |
