as a longtime duke fan.

This game is a giant piece of crap in its current state gameplay wise.

easy fixes.

1.) remove weapon limit.
2) gore levels returned
3) kick removed. no melee weapon, is fine as long as there is a kick.
4) release SDK so we can do it.

I believe the fanbase with its High resolution pack for the modern ports attitude can conjure up a modded DNF that delivers.

LittleMe wrote on Jun 7, 2011, 17:47:
I agree with the overall sentiment here, especially Dmitri M. The fun is gone in Arma2. Even in this press release they use words like 'gameplay' and 'players' but where is the focus on the game fun and playability? The shitty net-code, the bad performance, the heinous UI and the uncooperative players on public servers all combine to make this game fail hard. It could be good. I want to like it. I just.. can't. Btw, if you want outstanding squad work, Project Reality is where it's at. I would love it if BIS outdid PRmod. I expect hell to freeze over before that happens.

Fun is gone?

Maybe if you aren't creating levels to keep you and your friends playing. ArmaA 2 is great modded esp with the Blastcore pack. I'm happy to finally have some physics, now if they have ragdolls then this game already has some more shelf life for me.

I never purchase a Bohemia title expecting a lot of mission options, I expect a lot of options in the editor and with the games content. So Far they have done a good job.

Now streamlining the game to play smoother and easier for the new guys, thats a big problem it's always had. I think I would have to admit I very recently finally learned just about all the controls in ArmA that are critical to playing as quick and as effective as I do now.

I'll take ArmA3 I know BF3 will be awesome as well, they are different games.

I like to know there are Sim FPS games, Action FPS games and Arcade FPS games, which all have their place.

The other things I really want to see fixed is the lack of activity in the world, and everyone wanting to kill you, even if you worked for their faction.

I can't remember, didn't they try to explain that away by saying that you were "secretly" working for the sides?

Either way, I agree, it's annoying. I'd rather see a Just Cause 2 system, where people ignore you unless you are doing something obviously "bad".

Yeah they did, and it was stupid. They didn't feel like making actual factions in the game, so they just had everyone shoot at YOU. Even if you played cat and mouse with a Jeep patrol to another checkpoint, the enemies still wouldn't fire at each other.

So despite all the backstory of the two factions being at war, the only one they were actually both at war with was YOU.

Oh, and the toolbag that came up with that design decision recently called LA Noire trash and kitschy. The fucking moron.

Creston, you're starting to sound like me with the anger. I call it passion.

What Duke 3D had was great maps, in my opinion especially the plutonium pak levels. There's not much you can do with a game if your map design isn't any good. I still haven't played the DNF demo and can't base anything off of screenshots, but these levels don't look good. Hopefully I'll be surprised when I play the game.

No level design can fix DNF's awful game mechanics. It has to play better before he can drop into a cooler level and still stay fun once fighting starts.

I must have constructed almost 500 or so levels with that build engine over the years because the gameplay itself was tight / solid!

To Gbox trust me as a duke fan on this.

You fucked this one. Maybe not wholly financially, but credibility wise. We all know the two weapons at once was gearboxes change.

It's not a run and gun shooter, which is what Duke Nukem has always been. Instead it's a Halo Warfare 4 console shooter with all the stale gameplay trappings that have diluted the appeal of the FPS genre. Graphics aren't the issue with the game, it's the gameplay. All they needed to do was bring back the gameplay that made Duke3D great and they failed miserably. It was never about the hookers, the language, or the shit and dick jokes. Those were all just garnishment on the fun gameplay.

At this point I'm just hoping Gearbox don't lose their shirts over this and have it negatively effect Borderlands 2. :\

most pertinent and well said.

the gore is a joke, no kick or hands to punch is a joke. Stale prey'esqe physics when Broussard teased with Megon physics quality.
the two weapons at a time feature is worse then I could imagine.

If Valve did that to any of their titles it would be detrimental to the fun.

The game is not even out yet and they are announcing DLC that you'll have to pay for too? Not a very smart/good marketing strategy there boys.

I don't really get the impression that many people will be purchasing this title this time around anyway, let alone paying for DLC.

Yawn.......

Look I'm all for making money and making games and finding the balance but this type of news just looks like a joke.

80. Re: Duke Nukem Forever Demo Jun 3, 2011, 19:29 SectorEffector

Ray Marden wrote on Jun 3, 2011, 18:51:
It is nice to finally be playing this, but I still question some over the overall decisions.

Upfront, the graphics are tad outdated, but that is expected. Old or new, though, I do not get the obsession with making games look ugly. I do not want motion blur. I do not want film grain. I do not want everything outside of my immediate focus to be covered in vaseline. And when I do want to turn off this crap, I want to be able to individually select it, not lose every graphical enhancement.

Playing the demo, two thoughts spring up - one, they need to work a bit on the options/control/feel and, two, a lot depends how how much the final game opens up.

For the former, it is all the little things - it does not properly support 1920x1200, I want to tweak the FoV, Duke walks a little slow, running is overly exaggerated and has a split second delay, I do not like how the mouse input is handled, the scripting is a bit wooden, the animation feels a little stiff, weapons feel a bit weak, you're confined to only two primary weapons, the contextual use command is a little flakey, Daikatana taught us long ago that shooting small toads suck, I wish the kidk feature was there for opening crates, etc.

For the latter, I am coming into this game looking for the fun and over the top aspects. From the demo's perspective, at what point was I really free to run around everywhere, explore for secrets, and create havoc? These were relatively linear, confined sequences. Looking back to just the first level of the prior game, I was using a jetpack, finding secrets, looking for cracks in the walls, playing in the arcade, screwing with the projector, going through an air duct, finding a secret via the cash register, etc.

I am mildly intrigued and need to play it again, but it really depends on what the final game is. If this style of gameplay - confined, linear areas with few special areas - is what the game is about, I would argue both developers failed at making a Duke Nukem game. So long as there are more unique or just improbable situations - the alien is in the building; go kick its ass! - in the final game, it has the chance to be fun. Even then, though, they really need to tweak some things to bring back the sense of speed and power.
I must be naive, but I see the possibility. I just don't think they did it.
Betting the driving segments will be the weakest portions of the game,
Ray

I have relatively realistic expectations for the full game.

I'm just hoping its better than painkiller. Which I had a blast playing. And I expect to laugh. (not at the game being horrible or the graphics sucking )
