Well said. Bethesda had do to half an hour of video to get the RPG element across for Fallout 3, but still resorted to shorter hype videos like this to appeal to the short-attention-span of most people.

On top of that, all of the Fallout 3 DLC trailers were like this.

It looks to me like they're unique or modified versions of items in the game. For example, the Caravan Pack has a Sturdy Caravan Shotgun, which by the description sounds like it's more reliable than a regular Caravan Shotgun, and lightweight leather armor which is lighter than regular leather armor, but offers the same protection. It doesn't say if these are the items you start with or if they replace the regular items in the game.
