Re: rope-a-derek...Unbelievable. Truly.
One last word about that Flame War site...having read through most of that very entertaining exchange, I'll agree that that guy's pursuit of you was kind of weird. However, your online behavior here as well as on your own forums (to your own customers no less) is no different than what's on display at that Flame War site. In addition to being blissfully free of humility, you also have a powerful masochistic streak about you. So while the author of that Flame War site may be a bit stalkerish, his case is not wholly unconvincing.
You're an original, no question about it.
Re: Blue's note about schoolyard bullies...yes, I shall defer to your superior judgment and cease my silliness. |

Not to interupt the regularly scheduled dsmart bashing, but Pankin if you're going to make claims you know nothing about and from has been industry programmers who didn't have any first hand knowledge, either stop or don't expect anyone to take you seriously.
As a programmer myself all I can say is that unless you have access to someone's source code you have no way of knowing what a program or game does.
You can bash the man all you want but if you're trying to discredit him using nothing but internet hearsay and urban legends (e.g. that whole Coke machine non incident comes to mind) you only end up looking foolish, jealous and stupid. Like, say, putting Ph.D. in your sig when you don't really have one? That kind of foolishness?
Also one trip to Google shows all the articles which have been written about Smart's work, especially his much touted Neural Net which IIRC is the basic of his gaming technologies. With all the games to his credit go ahead and make fun of him all you want. When you're done please show us what you've done lately. I do ok with my own thing. However, showcasing my own professional shortcomings does not in any way prop yours up. And vice versa. But then, I'm not nearly as demonstrative and spotlight-hungry as you seem to be.
You say "all the games to his credit." Half of those titles are merely patched "gold" versions of buggy initial releases. Much like a Ph.D. from a degree mill, they don't count.

IIRC it was even used as the basis of someone's uni thesis. So get your facts right but that is probably not allowed around here.

Note. since I stopped posting here awhile back for the same behavior exibited here by you regulars, go ahead and acuse me too of being dsmart but that won't change the facts. It really doesn't matter to me if you're Derek. I just get to respond with what I had to say.
And hey, if Battlecruiser 3000AD had a neural net programmed into it in 1996 (as was your claim), I'll gladly admit I was wrong about that single point. No problemo. How this can be proven without bias from either side, I do not know.
I'm a sucker for facts. I am not bigger than the truth. But if you spend a good chunk of time reading that follies.werewolves site, you'll realize that Derek thinks he is. And that's the pathological stuff crazy's made out of! |

Aww come on you guys! You chased him away before I could find out about the neural net thing. Of course, I knew the answer: that there is no neural net and there never was.
With regard to Derek Smart's claim of the existence of neural net code in Battlecruiser 3000AD, former NASA programmer Keith Zabalaoui has been quoted as saying, "I have a hard time believing it's in there... the concept of training [neural nets] to do the complex tasks required in a game is inconceivable. It's mumbo jumbo. I guarantee you that if there's a neural net that does anything in [BC3K] this man would be in the Computer Science Hall of fame."

And to think we could've finally sorted out the whole Ph.D. thing here on Blue forums. Alas, alack, Alaska. |

What about my neural net question? Will your NN code be present in GCO?
Philip R. Spagnolli, former Take 2 employee, albeit with no direct involvement in BC3K, commenting on usenet in December 1996: "Take2's flight engine [named Chase] was added ... but most of the code was sheltered from the programmers due to the nature of Smart's desire to keep his special code secret. Much of the cool stuff like the supposed neural net would not work with the Take2 flight engine."
http://www.capsu.org/bc3k/2.html#intro_6 I'm not sure how Mr. Spagnolli could know whether or not your code worked with the Take2 flight engine if he never saw the code. At any rate, Take2 ain't around anymore so the path is cleared to make use of this neural net code, yes? |
