I think there's another core problem with the game design that contributes a lot to why items feel so crappy. It's their horribly uninformed decision to copy the "primary attribute" system from WoW. It basically divided the entire item set into discrete categories where, as say a Barbarian, you are NEVER going to use an item that rolls dex or int (or whatever they're called, I can't remember).
Further, it creates the situation where your primary goal is to find gear where a single number is increased. Whereas in D2, you didn't care nearly so much about your attributes which meant there was more room for variety in the items that each player finds attractive. In D3, there is no disagreement on what's an attractive item AND there's an auction house which totally kills a normal player's motivation to actually farm for items. |

| So, all that information that your character can access on the surrounding environment is just a sly way of forcing relentless quest compasses and hint boxes onto the "next gen" player? I can't wait to play the next gen version of "walk toward a HUD icon in third person and then press A." Gonna be thrilling. |

If those who think that did 5 minutes of reading on Jade Raymond, they'd know she actually worked quite hard and is well regarded in the industry as an exceptional project manager. But she's cute so that must be why right. And people claim there isn't a sexism issue in the industry. Christ.
This isn't Jessica Chobot we're talking about here. Look her her game industry "origin story", compare it to Raymond's and spot the differences. They're rather significant. Um, Jessica Chobot is a talking head. Obviously she's going to be judged based on how she looks. I'm not sure how her story is relevant to Jade Raymond's.
But you're right, Jade Raymond's story is probably somewhere in the middle between her good looks and her skills. Which is still unfair, no? |

Maybe but they employ people in positions regardless of appearance which was the point. I understood what you originally wrote. I think the real point is that, if BioWare had hired Jade Raymond, she would have done just as well at BioWare as she would have at Ubisoft. Maybe even better considering my point about their maturity level. |

Nothing wrong with that; it's just how things work, right or wrong. Oh I don't know, Bioware for example has some women fairly high up who I don't find very attractive. Gaming as an industry has grown up a lot in the past ten years. Being attractive certainly never hurts your chances I suppose though. Considering Bioware's staff has the sexual maturity of an 8th-grader, I wouldn't use them as an example.
Anyway, it's obvious that Raymond got ahead through her looks. But it's also obvious that she got ahead by towing the company line. Just listen to her vomit-inducing interviews about how games are so difficult for some people that she thinks they should have an option to just play themselves. |

"Capcom believes it can produce a large profit through mobile games, and digital PC titles. Monster Hunter 4 and Lost Planet 3 are two titles in particular that the company hopes will help it turn things around."
The way this sentence is worded seems to imply that MH4 and LP3 are going to be either mobile games or digital PC titles. |

But we're not resting on our laurels," said Mark Rubin, "which is why we've decided to eschew the Modern Warfare 4 title entirely for this next rehash! We think it's a huge risk we're taking -- after all, how will customers easily find the same old game with a new name when they're looking for it at Walmart?" |

"Barely acceptable in its day"? It might as well be my favorite game of that generation, and easily in my top 30 games of all time. I don't know if it aged well (because I haven't played it in what, 12 years now?), but it was pretty awesome back then, and it was a commercial and critical success.
Then again, its sequel ("Fade to Black") was not nearly as good. But the box it came in was awesome. It actually aged really well. The graphical style holds up and the gameplay/level-design is still superb. I replayed it last year. One of my favorite games ever. |

| This is an amusing combination of two similar interviews. Garriott is a guy who hasn't made a good game in years tooting his own horn. Then we've got Tom Bissell in a ridiculously long interview about video game storytelling when his latest contribution is writing the poorly reviewed script for a Gears of War game... |

Well, it'd be almost pointless to get BF3 without the DLC at this point. I don't imagine there are many servers out there running the vanilla release.
DS3 and ME3 for free even with no DLC is a pretty reasonable value, though, assuming you're into that sort of thing... |

They deserve just as much indignation for this mess of a game release and it pains me to see them potentially getting away from this without much damage to their reputation. There is no difference between EA and Maxis. Its the same company. EA only kept the Maxis name for brand reasons. That may be strictly true but I doubt they disintegrated legacy Maxis and replaced them with EA workers. This is mostly the original Maxis except now they're just a piece of another organization, no? |
