I really wanted to buy SSHD... until I saw the price.
Seriously, I'm not handing out 18$ just for high-resolution textures for a 7 year old game which I completed already at least 10 times before.
10$ and I would have bought it; and it's not really about money but rather about principle. Just have a look at the classic Lucasarts releases. LA got at leaast that part right. |

This company was not brought to life to make money with its services, it never will.
They are just waiting to be bought by a much bigger player because of its patents and (theorectical) potential, fulfilling the wet dream of Perlman and his co-founders to make a lot money by fooling people.
This is like Ageia all over again... |

Those runtimes updates should always be installed because these are the only updates you get for your DirectX installation.
These runtime packages are released every two months and include all the latest bug- and securityfixes, and most importantly the latest DirectX libraries needed by the latest games.
Not sure why Microsoft is not offering these on Windows Update because some people think this redistribution packages are only meant for developers and do not include any updates, which is clearly wrong. |

It's mind boggling that it took 10 freaking years for him to pull his head out of his ass and actually make something beyond a 2d 8bit sky.
And who says that the sky in Rage is now 3D FP 24-bit and still not another high-resolution 2d bitmap put around a sky cube?
Looks 2d-ish to me, the added sun flare effect doesn't mean it's now a real 3d sky |

I can hear the complaints already, if LA released the games on Steam without the CD audio.
No problem at all, Loom uses CD audio tracks for all dialogues, they just compressed some into a Monster Sound file, typically for the Lucasarts Adventure games at that time, and offer it with the Steam package.
I guess, they will do the same for all the other concerned games like Monkey Island 1 or Zak McKracken and hopefully also Outlaws.
The four adventure games released now are original, completely unchanged games with exactly the same content at their initial releases. The only thing that changes is the interpreter which has been ported to Windows and a added "graphics smoothing" option.
BTW, The Dig is also currently not available for me, strange. But one can still play it using ScummVM, it's just that the interpreter won't run, the game content is intact. |

This is a whole new game, new characters, new locations, new weapons, new infected. There are serious improvements in every area that was lacking on the first. From a more intelligent director, to actual random weather, world objects, and the levels change up as well. There are more chapters, each chapter is supposed to be quite a bit bigger bla bla bla yadda yadda....
or maybe it's still exactly the same engine which the addition of weather changes and a Director capable of changing it, reskined characters and weapons, the same buggy and POS matchmaking system (slighty enhanced of course) resulting in absolutely the same gaming experience and which will obsolete in 2010 when L4D3 comes out.
I lost my trust in Valve, I will not buy this new beta version just to get deceived again by Valve with no real updates or added content. I made this error last time, it will not happen again. |

If your definition of "for a while" is 7 months, than yes, L4D is out for a while.
And still, the major problem is not that L4D has not yet been out for a year but Valve's stellar track record with other games (mainly CS:S and TF2 which has been out for 3-4 years and still getting major updates) but Valve now seems to completely ignore L4D.
They promised much more content, new campaigns, weapons, achievements but L4D will not be left in the cold. It even took Valve 6 months to release the content they already promised with the initial release of the game.
L4D just feels like a huge beta test (for the price of 50$ of course) with all the bugs remaining, mediocre matchmaking system, lack of content.
... and a year later a sequel should now be released with the same engine, gameplay principles, only one more campaign and slightly tweaked Director and we should shell out another 50$? no way, I've been burned by Valve with the lack of support of L4D, I don't trust them this time that they will do better,

I really have to stop recommending sony cameras to friend which is the really the only Sony product worth buying. But those arrogant ignorants really don't deserve any money.
Glad that I didn't buy a PS3 as my home media center and instead opted for HTPC.
Has the head of Sony still not noticed that most people now know that Sony doesn't stand for superior quality and technology but for overpriced plastic... at least Apple offers some quality and design, eventhough their products are still overpriced and only meant for wannabe elite and hip egomaniacs. |

Multicore Rendering, does this refer to multicore CPU support, or Multicore GPU support?
Are you talking about two GPU cores on one board or SLI? Dual-core GPU support is driver dependent, game developpers cannot improve or change anything here. SLI is already supported by TF2 for a very long time.
This new update adds multi-core CPU support. |

and they still haven't fixed the no-sound issue with the demo many people are experiencing... do they really think anybody who gets no sound at all with the demo will buy the full version when they keep absolutely quiet about the issue? For my part, I certainly won't buy the full version. |

It just comes off rather whiney and spoiled when people complain about getting new content only 2 months after release. I don't think anyone would turn it down now, that's for sure, but to already be saying things like "come on Valve WHEN?" is rather silly.
I think you are forgetting something. When TF2 was released it had a lot bugs, correct but it offered lots of content (9 characters with different abilities, lot of tactics to try and test out) and above all you could get that all for 20 bucks.
L4D is available for 50$ on Steam and it offers only four small campaigns with limited replay value. People are just expected way more content for 50$, especially because you can get games like Fallout 3, FarCry 2 or STALKER for the same price and offering at least 10 times the amount of content and production value.
L4D needs at least another 4 campaigns to be able to justify it's 50$ price tag. |

They fixed the melee exploit - makes it tougher.
I am still trying to finish all of the campaigns on Advanced. I shudder to think how I'm ever going to finish them on expert.
Didn't notice much change and I finish yesterday my last campaign on expert.
It all actually depends on the team, if you are playing in a great team, even expert is not really that difficult. We only had play the 4th chapter two times and completed the finale on the first run (with actually only one surviving but without teamplay, no one would have survived).
great fun on expert. that's what the game is meant for

2 things:
1. FarCry 2 did that "good" not because it is a fantastic game with a lot of innovation (it is not) but because it had a lot of advertising and because it was called "FarCry" even though it had nothing to do with the franchise.
2. The next big budget game from Ubisoft will most certainly include again the latest DRM protection because the PoP did not meet expectations and they can blame the lack of success on pirates which are downloading millions, em of course billions of copies for free on their local torrent sites.
Anyway what unrealistic expectations did they have for that game? The level design and visuals were great but the gameplay is the worst, dumbed down console BS I have seen in a long while. |

Also, everyone and their dog LOVED these things when they were in System Shock. Then id does them and everyone hates it.
Not sure about you but I played System Shock because I expected a decent techno-punk cyberspace action thriller with light RPG elements while solving puzzles and finally opposing an mysterious enemy.
When installing Doom (1&2) I expect nothing different than killing 5000 monsters from hell. I got that... but not with Doom 3. id artificially tried to glue an explanation to why 100 monsters spawn behind you in a closet but nobody asked for story nor 100 closet monsters. People wanted raw shooting action.
If id, or whoever develops D4, does the same thing again and tries to put a serious story in a game which requires none, instead of optimizing the fragfest, then D4 will fail as horribly as D3.
... and please, just don't try to compare System Shock with Doom 3, it makes you look ridiculously (even though I know that you really didn't want to). People loved messages in SS because this added depth to the experience. Doom never can and never will offer this kind of game feeling, |

Does this imply that there will be more to the story then "run around like mad and blow up monsters"?
No, this means there will be more more messages uploaded to your PDA during gameplay which no one will read because they are both tedious and boring.
Remember that id had already hired a professional author to write the in-game mails... I stopped reading them after the 4th or 5th I got, I expected action out of this game, not chat messages. |
