Is this the patch that makes the game fun?

What? This game is supposed to be fun?

Somehow I didn't expect them to licence the Source engine for very good reasons

10. Source engine? Jul 4, 2005, 14:50 vacs

Why on earth did they choose the source engine for this sequel?

I don't want to stutter my way through all the episodic minigames while experiencing hard lockups and crashes back to desktop every 20-30 minutes.

Don't they understand? Matrix is dead, it's over. No one is anymore interested in the franchise after the two lackluster sequels.

We all know by now that the Wachoswki brother and sister are hacks and stole the whole concept. Game over man!

The ATI level (The Lost Coast) is a short graphical demo (more or less) meant to push the boundies of top of the line PC's

True, the ATI level will run with reduced effects and image quality on ATI hardware and will run the best with all effects enabled on nvidia hardware (FP16 HDR, SM3.0).

em, did I just say "ATI" level?

Funny how this "ATI level" announced last year actually turned into an "nvidia level"

Aftermath will require the same hardware than HL2 if you don't enable HDR. With HDR a PC fullfilling the minimum required specs for HL2 won't run the game anyhow nicely.

Picture quality on top of the line LCDs crushes CRTs.

Ignorance is bliss

I have both an LCD and a CRT (dual monitor, whoohoo!)

I'd never game on anything other than a CRT. My LCD was a top rated two years ago, still looks a bit washed out. My roommate has a brand new Dell with the 20" Ultrasharp - same thing. He was very disappointed when he saw how much nicer my 19" CRT looks during gaming.

Yes, they're huge, but as gamers, don't we make sacrifices for the best possible experience?

There is absolutely no doubt about it, if you want the best possible image quality, you have to use a CRT.

Even the cheaper CRTs are still better than expensive LCDs.

And now I don't care about HDR anymore until flat panel displays catch up cos there's no way I'm going back to one of those unwieldy behemoths.

I didn't say that HDR doesn't work with LCDs because it does. It's just that due to the nature of the LCD crystals, very bright light as also very dark spots cannot be represented as good as on CRTs. So to say, the whole dynamic range is slightly more reduced on LCDs than on CRTs but nevertheless you'll get all the fancy HDR effects possible in those games.

To explain: a very bright spotlight and the sun are normally represented the same way with traditional lighting engines. HDR allows to differentiate between very bright (spotlight) and even more bright (the sun) light and represent them more truthfully on the screen.

Of course can a CRT and LCD not emite the same brightness than a 500w spotlight, we need therefore the tonemapping process to recalibrate those values. A CRT however can represent those high dynamic range values slightly better than a LCD.

.i got geforce 6800 ultra and a crt monitor, and farcry installed.do i have to turn this feature or is it automatic?

no, it's disabled per default, even with the latest patch.

You'll need at least FarCry 1.3 to make it work, just start any level (the first one inside the cave in the beginning is just perfect to demonstrate HDRL), open the console and type "\r_hdrrendering 7" without the quotes. You will see the effect of HDR immediately after turning it on.

"\r_hdrrendering 0" will disabled HDR again.

FP16 HDR can reduce your overall performance by 30-50%, depending on your system configuration.

what is HDR?
do u need special kind of video card and monitor to witness this?can any one tell me about this without the tehcno jargon?

As I said in my previous post basic HDRL works with all PS2.0 supporting cards (DX9). High-precision HDR is however limited to GF 6x00 and GF 7x00 cards.

Concerning the need for a special monitor, actually yes, you do But those monitors which can display a much higher range of brightness are not publically available and very expensive. The problem with HDR indeed is that HDR offers too much precision for current monitors and that's where tone mapping comes in. This technique recalculates the rendered HDR image with brightness values which are more easily displayed on current monitors.

The get the best HDR experience you'll need a CRT monitor, LCD and plasma are much more limited concerning the high dynamic range they can display.

24. Re: HDR Jun 25, 2005, 05:45 vacs

One question, these tech demos used standard DX9/OpenGL pixel shaders to achieve the effect, but I can't tell if this is the case with the new GeForce 7 series or if it will be the case with Lost Coast. Is there a new technology in the GF7s for HDR or are those of us with previous generation cards (thinking about my 9800xt here) going to be able to run HDR stuff (not tech demos) without any problems?

There are different kinds of HDR: HDR used in movies like Star Wars and HDR used in real-time for games.

HDR for games is not the full package but nevertheless quite interesting because all traditional 8-bit lighting limitations since the days of Quake 1 have been removed with HDR. HDR will be omnipresent in games in 1-2 years.

HDR like it is used in movies, adds global illumation or ambient occlusion to the mix to enhance the photoreaslism and makes also use of real image-based lighting, features which are quite limited for games.

Concerning HDR for games, there currently exist to major implementation of it:

One method, used by the RTHDRIBL demo and Serious Sam 2, is the low-precision HDR. It works on all DX9 cards (PS2.0 required) and looks great in techdemos but is quite limited for games. Banding and other artifacts will be visible and the coding is rather difficult because this method cannot handle transparent HDR effect well. Nevertheless is works on all DX9 compliant cards and is quite fast.

Now where it starts to get interesting is FP16 blending HDR. As stated by the Paul Debevec, the "inventor" of HDR, HDR needs floating-point precision to be able to show all its glory and lighting effects. However in order to use this FP16 precision, your hardware needs to support it. Currently only the GF 6x00 and 7x00 series support FP16 blending HDR, as also the upcoming R520. Currently only two games support FP16 blending HDR: FarCry and Splinter Cell - Chaos Theory.

The Lost Coast has support for both HDR methods. If you "only" own a normal DX9 card, you'll get low-precision HDR. If you lucky to have bought a 6x00 or a 7x00, you'll get the full quality FP16 HDR.

Unfortunately FP16 HDR eats up half of your memory bandwidth which means that performance is much lower with FP16 HDR than with low-precision HDR or no HDR. Of course with FP16 you'll get the nicer effects.

Crytek added the feature that Valve is describing to the FarCry engine a few weeks ago in a patch.

A few weeks ago? Are you joking? HDR is available in FarCry for over a year now.

Splinter Cell - Chaos Theory also supports HDR including tone mapping the day the game was released.

Valve is quite late concerning HDR.

AvP2 was nearly better than AvP1 in every area other than capture of fear.

True and that's exactly what made AvP1 is so superior to AvP2: The sense of fear when playing as the marine.

AvP2 never lived up to any of those moments.

"Here is the first screenshot from dod_flash, which is the first map that has been given this complete art pass. We'll have more things to share over the next few weeks."

I translate this as "Well, we're done with one map so far!". I hope I'm wrong.

Funny, that is exactly what I also thought after reading that news update. Sounds like valve will start a public beta with one map in September much like they did it last year with CS:S.

That would mean that we will have about 10 DOD:S maps by march 2006...
