News Comments > Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Leaked?
67. Re: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Leaked? Oct 31, 2011, 09:47 ^Drag0n^

Agreed.

If you make games that are good enough, the piracy becomes noise, just as in the film and music industries.

There are casual pirates and core pirates: core pirates NEVER intend on buying the game, so trying to fight them is a pointless battle. Casual pirates? Well, minimal DRM keeps most of them honest. If the game's great, they probably will buy it anyway.

They already have. Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 will come with opening cinematics and the player config menu. The rest of the game will be purchasable as DLC at the rate of $10/level.

On a more serious note, piracy is just as rampant on the consoles, and it becomes even easier if you don't shive a git about the console not being connected to the Internet.

Want to fight piracy? Make a good game that sells well at a reasonable price, then the pirated copies wil just be a part of the noise (see Torchlight, Quake, DXHR).

Furthermore, piracy is more a symptom rather than a cause of problems in the gaming industry. Whether they know it or not, they are being given the same kind of message that the RIAA and the MPAA have been served by their content users. They can either fight it with lawsuits and by punishing legitimate users, or they can listen to what they are being told and adapt their marketing and sales strategies accordingly.

I need something to tide me over 'till Skyrim, so this should fit the bill nicely.

$15... They're sure tempting their fucking built-up Goodwill there, but I enjoyed the original so much (and it was such great value for money) that I'll give them the extra 15.

Dunno...I may hold out for the december sales. I have Metro2033, and haven't played it yet, so maybe that can hold me out 'till Skyrim. I heard that 2033 was pretty steep on the hardware, though(?)

agreed. I think the endings would have meant more had the choiced you made in the way you played became the equation that determined which of the four endings you received.

Pushing 4 different buttons after a quicksave to garner the corresponding achievement? Kinda lame.

News Comments > More Sony Hacking
10. Re: More Sony Hacking Oct 12, 2011, 13:36 ^Drag0n^

Got to back up Blue here. Brute force hacking of passwords is the oldest hack out there. The "Social Engineering" aspect is a more recent slant on it, which is not only surprisingly effective, but also the subject of a contest at BlackHat/WhiteHat each year where participants compete by cold-calling someone and obtaining a list of key information to win (user ID, antivirus type, email login, etc...)

Large scale use of this method is definitely an attack on Sony, not just the individual users.

That's the same track list that came with the Augmented Edition in the form of 12 MP3s...Has a bit of a Daft Punk (as in the TRON:Legacy Soundtrack) vibe to it.

(edited for spelling, clarification)

It always amazes me that this is more or less the only thing Jerykk and I agree on.

Games can be RPG-lite so long as their focus isn't on the RPG aspect. RPG elements can make most genres a bit more fun. As it stands the best games tend to blur genres a bit.

I agree as well; most games (especially shooters) benefit from a little RPG baked in.

Eh, CRPG stands for Computer Role Playing Game.

You're both wrong:

CRPG - Crappy Role Playing Game: (n) CRaP-Gee; Refers to the line of RPGs of the post-console era that have been dumbed down such as to not suffer from lack of a keyboard, mouse, or other higher level input device.

But I still pre-ordered Skyrim.

Agreed. the first Trine was awesome, and though the playing curve went very steep suddenly in the last encounter, I enjoyed it immensely, probably because it reminded me of the Mac classic, Dark Castle.

Moore's law works. The A5 chip in the iPhone4S is running games equivalent to UT2004 in complexity right now.

My 35w Ion2 powered netbook runs Doom 3 faster than the rig I ran it on originally; and, in it's day, the video card alone cost almost twice as much as the entire netbook.

I'd gladly give up my 1200w space heater of a PC for something with the same computing power that draws 4watts and is the size of half a brick of soap.

I mean, seriously?

Creston: You joke, man, but I'd be first in line for a house with real time digital monitoring of power, water, gas, and sewer.

For once you could see just how much it truly costs to give a shit

As for the whole Jobs thing (not aimed at you Cres; just a general comment): I still find it lowbrow to crap on a guy after death. Lots of people got into PCs because of him (Apple //e for me), and like or hate him, he did make technology accessible to people that normally would (should?) never be near a computer . I'm willing to bet a lot of our parents are on Macs because of the same reason mine are: I just can't handle running over to their house every time they get a trojan, infected jpeg, or some new phishing-deployed POS.
