News Comments > Quoteworthy - Paradox on DRM
41. Re: Quoteworthy - Paradox on DRM Jan 25, 2012, 20:52 ^Drag0n^

Just going on record that Fred has the right idea all the way around on DRM. It's too bad that the big houses still refuse to understand not what they lose to piracy, but what the true cost are of protecting IP at a draconian level is. So many people I know have not touched any EA and UBI pc titles this year on the PC that used to simply due to the problems, real or perceived, that those respective company's DRM packages throw at the end user.

I don't believe in not paying for a game, but I sure as hell don't believe in draconian DRM either.

Very nice. Bethesda's support seems to improve with time rather than degrade; a welcome oddity in the PC gaming world.

Here's why I think the playoffs are not rigged: It's totally against the interests of both the NFL and the media companies to have a Superbowl where the two teams playing are a mere 200 miles apart and are located as far from the center of the country as one can get. A 49ers - Pats or even 49ers - Ravens game would have had much more national appeal, me thinks.
49ers and Ravens would be interesting instead of seeing the same recent Super Bowl teams.

Dueling Coach Brothers?

Yeah, that would have been one for the ages.

Yup. Should be great. Pats lucked out, and the 49ers got sloppy, so we end up wit hthe rematch of the Century.

Grab some popgorn. GO PATS! (Hey, I was born in Boston )

This game sounds like a plot for Sum of All Fears 2 and not a Rainbow Six game. I wish Red Storm would take their studio back from Ubisoft.

Agreed. Tom Clancy never should have sold out.

Wow. Really? That's pretty ass, kid. They may be many things, but PC gaming haters is not one of them. Most of the people working in the FPS genre owe a hefty toll to id and Carmack. They deserve a little more respect than that.

Looks like that mod author was dead to rights, based on this line item regarding the PC version...

Improved compiler optimization settings (PC)

Wonder how this will fare compared to the mod fix for same...

And there was much rejoicing....

Can't wait to get my hands on the SDK...one of the first games in a while I've been interested in non-professional modding thereof.

Sorry PJHF, but I'm with Jerykk on this one. I'm not one that likes or adheres to rails... I easily spent 100+ hours on Fallout 3 and New Vegas... I tend to explore the world and sidequests, rather than running it like an Infinity Ward game on rails.

Honestly, I believe that the game has enough content to outlast just about anyone's willingness to explore.

Supposedly the words of Oblivion and Morrowind are already in the game, just waiting for Bethesda to populate them in an expansion (or enterprising modmakers to do same)

YMMV.

I may be wrong, but I think that I remember them saying that they are working on a PC port of RDR in a recent news post(?)

Kinda Meh on that, though... Have it on theXbox already, and, without mods, it'll just be another mediocre PC port.

I may be wrong, but I think Steam is checking any of your cloud-saved games for newer saves.

^D^

It's possible, but it was doing this LOOOOOONG before they ever had cloud-saves. (and it's still doing it on games that have no cloud-saves functionality.)

Good example : Skyrim. If I launch Skyrim through the Steam shortcut, it'll happily sit there for 2, 3 minutes before starting the launcher. If I launch it through Nexus Mod Manager, it starts IMMEDIATELY.

Good job, Valve.

Creston

Wierd. In that case, I'd guess they are validating the files. As I recall, the Bethesda launcher/config util USED to be the exe that checked DRM...I remember FOMM launching fallout 3 faster as well.

I also remember that launching to FO3.exe directly eliminated the disk check completely. Beth was kinda cool about that and hinted that was the way around keeping your disk-in-tray. ;-)

84. Re: Layoffs at id Software Jan 16, 2012, 16:03 ^Drag0n^

I never like to hear about layoffs, regardless of the company. And while the road with id is sometimes rocky as of late, they are still top shelf people with top shelf ideals. I wish those affected the very best.

That said, I think my only real complaint with rage was thus: the game was too short. It felt like a precursor to a larger game that just stopped mid-sentence.

I actually read the rage novel, thinking that the game would cover far more than the book once it was released. I was horribly disappointed.

The engine? It's got long life. I'm sure the next few games will utilize it better as the hardware improves and 2+gigs of VRAM becomes more common.

46. Re: Bethesda Buys Fallout MMOG Rights Jan 16, 2012, 15:41 ^Drag0n^

Oh, now come on, guys.

The Skyrim engine has about as much in common with the previous engine as Quake 3 had with Quake 2.

Iterations based on each other?

Surely. I mean that's game development 101: don't throw away everything unless you HAVE to.

But the SAME engine?

no way.

Models are higher resolution; view distances are greater, load times are FAR FAR faster. Characters have more realistic motion and don't "freeze" when you talk to them...just to name a few.

Yes, it's bound by DirectX9, but that is to be expected, as the lead platform was the 360. And certainly a reason behind why the PS3 version is....lacking (like that's ever a surprise. Sony really needs to invest in software tools...theirs are an absolute joke by comparison to MS and Nintendo).
