Aero wrote on Jun 27, 2012, 14:44: So, other than that, is it any good? For some reason, largely due to boredom and some cash to burn, I decided I was going to buy either this or Spec Ops (knowing full well neither was going to be particularly good) and the couple reviews I read pushed me towards Spec Ops and it is so far, as I expected, good enough for me to play and have some fun with, but very thoroughly mediocre in the grand scheme of things.
There's a good bet I'll end up buying this one eventually too though, because there really isn't much in the way of upcoming action games for the PC until winter. It's just a question of how soon. I haven't really read any reviews on it or been following the game either. I'm curious what any owners of the game have to say about how it measures up. Is it basically Call of Duty Recon or is there squad gameplay and such? It's... Ghost of Duty. It has the big budget backdrops and action sequences of a Call of Duty campaign. But it still has the open endedness of a Ghost game where there are a few routes even in a smaller areas like a camp to decide how you want to tackle things. Some parts of missions require not sounding alarms so your only way to really tackle those areas are complete silence and not dropping a dead body next to a guy long enough for him to alert anyone (i.e. you can mark 4 targets, each squadmate takes 1, but if there is an extra 5th guy you still have time to tag him out before he can call for help if you're quick)
It also has the customizability of Ghost Recon's guns. I can't say there are anywhere near as many guns as say, the original R6 or Ghost Recon games. But there are plenty... 30ish? maybe. 5 or 6 of each Shotgun/SMG/LMG/Assault Rifle/Sniper Rifle/PDW/Pistol.... so maybe closer to 35? I guess that actually is a decent number.
The AI isn't your classic standard point and click RTS style squadmate placement. They are actually fairly intelligent and if you're marking targets that have to be taken down silently they will move into position in a way that keeps them hidden etc. They aren't retarded and don't run out into the open. In all fairness I've died far... far more times, than the AI squadmates have by doing stupid things myself. Fortunately they can rez you once or twice before you're completely dead.
All in all me and my buddies have been enjoying it COOP very much. It's a fun game.
Just a little Edit to add. It has a mode called Guerilla mode as well. Which is an objective based "Wave" mode with 50 waves. Where every 10 waves you have to secure a new HQ and defend it for the next 10 waves. You get "Wave Bonuses" every 5 waves, like maybe an airstrike or a helicopter to call in (Really not sure what they all are as we haven't put much time into it yet, trying to finish the campaign first) as well as supply drops between some waves to replenish claymores/grenades/possibly switch weapons. Seems fun so far.

*shrug* I've always been a huge Ghost Recon fanboy. Had this preordered, along with 3 buddies for the Campaign COOP.
That being said. We haven't run into any of the problems other people are having. With the exception of No Crossfire/SLI Support (It causes flickering) which is easily turned off.
We haven't had a single issue with WASD and Mouse. So we can't complain. Game runs great, and it has been a lot of fun coop. My keyboard works perfectly fine. Not saying others aren't having problems but it's not as wide spread as the Ubi-Haters would have you believe.

Verno wrote on Jun 26, 2012, 14:42: Yeah I played tons of BC2 and it was a lot easier to get ammo in that game (even if Grenade Joe was just dropping it for himself). The trouble with BF3 vs previous game iterations is that the weapon lethality is so high and suppression so powerful that there is no rear firing line or anything near that strategic, if you want ammo you'll save more time by simply dying and respawning. I can see it working in theory but in practice its just a mess. I'm referring to pubbie play btw, not with RL friends or clans. Ohh, well if you're simply talking about oblivious morons that won't drop ammo for you, I agree that that sucks. :p
I was commenting more on the gameplay design/balancing aspect, which could actually still use some work. The problem occurs more now, I think, because they made that boneheaded move to improve the global potency of suppression; what they should have done was make it less effective for all non-Support classes, so that more people would have a reason to play ammo guy. The LMGs are easily outclassed by rifles, so after the mortar nerf, all he's really good for is the risky-but-effective tactic of C4ing vehicles. All he's good for? Really? I just run around with an MP7 or a 870CS and destroy people and drop ammo for my squadmates. I guess I'm doing it wrong. I didn't know supports only use was the Mortar in Battlefield 3 *rolls eyes* |

I know more than I need to know about this game to know I will play it constantly for a very long time.
There have been several videos posted to Blues with actual gameplay. If you missed them, that is on you.
It's also not very hard to go to Youtube and type in "Planetside 2 E3 Stream" |

I am full blown speechless at their audacity to treat paying customers as unprivileged thieves for 3 days? You paid 60 dollars for your fucking game, you should have full access to it. They're confining people to a part of the game you can get to in a mere 2-3 hour sitting for 3 days.
You have got to fucking be kidding me. |

I never played PS1. The game is very open world. 3 continents at launch (with 2 more planned in the first year) with 2000 or so people able to fight on each continent. They kept people at e3 and in sneak peaks contained to one finished area so they could find each other to fight. As the continents are something like 600 square miles of open land and facilities.
And I could have sworn I sent this vid to Blue the week it came out but it never showed up on the main page. |

C22 sounds like a lot of fun, I love outfits where the goal is just having a good time trying different things other than zerging. We did a lot of things like this. Our original Claim to Fame on Konried server where our Tower of Power nights. Where we would go take a Tower in the middle of a fight between NC/Vanu where we didn't belong and see how long we could interrupt their battle. (Sometimes it was a half hour or more)
We also experimented with going to a locked continent, draining a base neutral in the middle of the continent to bring a fight to us and start the new continent that way (Instead of following the designated lattice lines)
We did the standard outfit things, ran Reaver nights and Armor Column nights. But the Spec Ops stuff we had the most fun with.
We became well known for doing random things like this and I truely hope Planetside 2 left room for this kind of gameplay.
More than welcome to come hang out with us, though right now until the beta starts it's mostly just a few of us playing BF3 or the original Planetside at night. |

That being said, PS2 looks awesome. Very glad SOE decided to do this, PS1 was in need of a "reboot" Thanks, it is good to see people still remember us. I recall reading a post recently from another NC player who refered to the last 2 minutes of a base hack as the "C22 Mark". As we'd suddenly appear in a Galaxy and wreck the CC Hold. Nothing like resecuring at the last moment to piss an entire faction off.

The tagline,"Size always matters." is just embarrassing and alienating to Planetside players not of the XY persuasion. It also makes me think of the not fun zergfests late game PS1 turned into. This is entirely based on what outfit you are in. Not all Outfits are part of the Zergfest. For instance, C22 as well as The Enclave where well known for being Black Ops/Wetworks outfits. Always on the back lines cutting lattice and flow of Tech to the front lines. Don't generalize the game because you were in an Outfit that followed the zerg or a Lone Wolf.

There are far, far better looks than this at Planetside 2 from E3. like their live streams with TotalBiscuit: http://youtu.be/fLakXgelJGY?hd=1 Day 1 http://youtu.be/0xcmHYuUbn0 Day 3
Both of which he talks to Margaret (one of the Vanu Devs) and Higby (One of the main Devs and a NC Fanboy)
They discuss the Cash Shop many times and how it will ONLY be uses for Cosmetic things, helmets, goggles, skins, skins for guns, skins for vehicles, hood ornaments. And of course, the XP Boosters that EVERY F2P model has which doesn't bother me at all.
That being said this new video does give off a great look at classic Planetside style in door squad vs squad combat. Which I was greatly excited for. As well as the superior faction, the Terran Republic being victorious.

I cannot confirm or deny whether or not I may be in some sort of test for this game.
But it plays like Mechwarrior Lite. Feels floaty even though the mechs way tons. It's also really impossible to tell if you're damaging an enemy mech.
I was excited for this game. Not so much anymore.
I'm becoming as cynical and jaded with the gaming industry as Cutter, it hurts.

They really are so blind they don't understand what made the ORIGINAL Modern Warfare a success on the PC at all do they.
It kills me, really, I loved that game, I'd probably still be playing COD games on the PC if they hadn't released 1 every freaking year and cocked up the dedicated servers. |

The combat, especially the melee combat is fantastic, the graphics are incredible, animations are best genre has ever seen (both monsters and players), dungeons are very good. Poster who dismisses it as an endless grind is cynical and dead wrong. Even my wife loves the game, and she was skeptical after being burned by AOC, WH, Rift, etc. We have 2 lvl 40's and love it.
Just make sure you have beefy computer to enjoy it to its fullest. We bought 2 new computers just to play this game after we started playing it and loved it. There is your endorsement.
Trust me, the game is freaking awesome. Period. The game *is* an endless grind though. Unless I missed something, somewhere, once you get to like level 10 you start slowing down and having to slog through the riff-raff of "Kill X" and "Fetch X" quests.
It is a nice looking and entertaining MMO to play in short bursts, but to tell someone that they are dead wrong and cynical for stating a bold-faced truth screams otherwise. Agreed. I found the game refreshing at first due to just the combat but once I hit 10, got past the first city and out to the first quest hub it was once again like every other MMO, mindless kill 10 of this gather 10 of those quests where I just kept clicking "next" on the useless paragraphs of text they used to make it sound like you were doing something new and different.
I'm done with MMO's till someone combines Tera's Combat with SWTOR's Storytelling without resorting to mindless dumbass quests. Hell I'd prefer returning to EQ's mindless Mob grinding in groups sitting against a wall at Karnor's Castle just for the mindless banter and making friends due to being there every single night for weeks at this point. |

And I'd even buy the entire sims 3 package if they priced it reasonably on steam and included all expansion packs. The last steam sale with sims 3 collection they wanted $120 and it did NOT include all expansion packs. $120 isn't reasonable to me. Yes, EA is ridiculous with the number of expansions, but thats part of why I want to try it, lol. Don't lie, you just want Katy Perry's Sweet Treats. |
