It's good if they have creative control. But it's hard to imagine that EA isn't in charge of the funding and development window for each game. That was the main problem with DA2, it was rushed.

The entire game is an online pass for the pc so congrats, you're stuck with it. I traded my 360 copy to some other lucky fellow and I'll be getting a copy of MW3 or BF3 in return at some point.

Of course, that's true of all PC multi-player games and has been for many years now. We often forget what a shit deal we're getting compared to consoles in terms of resellability.

Anyway, I think an online mode for ME3 could be welcome if it's just a distraction and accompanies a very full single-player game. GTA 4 did this quite well. The single player game wasn't lacking in any way, so multiplayer felt like just a bonus that proved fun for a few nights.

When you have to pre-order a game or buy a completely different game in order to gain access to a beta, the beta is obviously being used for marketing purposes. That's exactly what happened here. People who bought the Medal of Honor LE were guaranteed access to the BF3 beta.

Anywho, based on what I've seen of the "beta," BF3 will very likely be a buggy mess upon release. The game comes out in less than a month and we're still seeing major, obvious bugs. At this stage of development, the only bugs remaining should be obscure and hard to reproduce ones. It seems that EA really wants the game to come out before MW3, even if it isn't ready to.

Yeah, I've got to agree there with both points. EA gave up saying that the beta is a "privilege and not an entitlement" when they started selling access a year ago.

And I'm sure it will be buggy at release. But the bugs I've had weren't game-breaking, just annoying and plentiful. Judging from my experience on some of the Caspian Border servers, I'll enjoy it at release in spite of the bugs. And if they fix them at a steady clip, all is forgiven. On the other hand, if they only have a skeleton crew working on patches, I'll really have to stop buying Battlefield games day one.

Anyone know how to find said hacked servers? I tried sorting by player count, but that alone doesn't work well because the maximum number of servers any search returns is 100. I've tried a few filters but nothing has worked so far.

Sorting by game type did reveal a 32 player team deathmatch server that seemed suspect. But what I really want is a to try a 64 player conquest server.

Developed in-house at Volition in Champaign, IL

Were they the ones responsible for the disastrously buggy and quickly abandoned PC version? Or did they outsource the PC port?

A full list is outlined on the Battlelog forums, and here's the condensed list:

Anyone know what the URL for that would be? From the goggling I've done, I'm sort of doubtful there is any more extensive list than this one. The battlefield blog entry (first link in this story) doesn't mention anything about a full list. And all of the websites I've seen so far only have this incomplete list.

Knifing is horrible in the game. Also no way to see in game ping really messes with betas, as you can't tell if it's the server, client, or both lagging.

I disagree on the knifing. I've always hated the way it was handled in other games with a random slash resulting in an instant kill. Using a knife in a combat situation is supposed to be a last resort, not a common thing. It's also not instant-fast. You have to lower your weapon, draw a knife and slash, and god help you if an opponent sees what you're trying to do.

It SHOULD be used only for humiliation kills and last resort situations. It SHOULD NOT be CoD style insta-kill as soon as you press the button with someone in melee range.

Vast VAST improvement over knifing from other games.

Couldn't agree more. And I love how a teammate can even save you from a knife kill if they shoot fast enough in the animation. CoD Black Ops was simply goofy with the dual-wielding ballistic knives. However, it's still very satisfying in BF3 to knife someone, maybe more so since it's a challenge.

no ability to remap keys?!?!?

It's just a bug that effects most mice, it's not like it was a design decision. You can still remap any of the keyboard keys, and certain brands of mice can be remapped.

Caspian has some serious bugs and was supposed to be for internal testing only which begs the question why they are publicly posting the PWs on the forums/twitter. Hell, Metro has serious issues and glitches so they should just open it up already. The current password is the shoppingcart one but it only works on the official servers from EA that are running Caspian I think.

Caspian is way more fun and indicative of a true BF experience, no clue why they pushed Metro on us again after the alpha.

If this game succeeds it's going to be in spite of EA/Dices best efforts, they keep shooting themselves in the foot.

They weren't trying to do internal testing on Caspain, more like a moderate size closed beta. That's why they are running enough servers to accommodate a couple thousand players. The passwords were just supposed to be for the members of certain forums or clans.

But whoever came up with the system is not very familiar with the Internets. Of course the password would leak if there's a single one given to a few thousand people who just happen to be members of the right forums.

Anyway, I totally agree that it's senseless and irritating that they didn't choose to have at least half the servers playing Caspian from the start.

16. Re: Battlefield 3 Beta Graphics Analysis Sep 27, 2011, 22:18 entr0py

They don't have enough servers, and quickmatch doesn't work well, but if you know how to work the server browser it doesn't take too long to get in. I've joined maybe 10 servers today, and it's never taken more than 3 minutes of trying.

From battlelog point at multiplayer, then click filter. Set the region filter, then check 1-5 free slots, and check Operation Metro and view servers. Now you can sort by ping or player count. Try servers until you're in.

If they hire Axis Animation to make the film it would be a must-see. Short of that, there's nothing interesting about the Dead Island setting.

You do understand that just firewalling it does not fix the issues right? People have had issues with it just existing. I was one of them till some patches fixed my problems. But others still had tons of issues.

No I didn't know about those issues, I was responding to Elessar's troubles. That would suck. It does make me wonder what sort of deal they've reached with Microsoft to include GFWL. Because it does nothing useful in the game, and it's not designed to be DRM.

I have never had trouble with GFWL either, certainly nothing to compare with the trouble I've had with Steam.

But if you don't want to worry about it updating, you could just block Arkham Asylum and GFWL in your firewall, then create an offline profile. That only takes a couple minutes, so I'm not sure why you'd bother downloading a crack.

It does irritate me that Warner Bros. choose to include GFWL, simply because it does almost nothing. The only online feature of the first game was the time trial leaderboards. And I think it's safe to say that no one in the world cared about that.

If they could fix the combat, I'd love to see another Jade Empire. Fortunately there have been a large number of games since then that have nailed 3rd person brawling. The sub-par gameplay was what kept the first game from becoming a classic. But it was great as far as characters, writing, artwork, player choices and setting.

So it's $60 plus another $78 for the six months I would play it? $138 for a game? Sorry, that's too much for me. Plus: I wouldn't sign the ToS.

Yes, except that one month is included with the initial cost of the game, so that would be for 7 months. You'll find the price is pretty standard with new premium MMOs. It is a lot of money, but I guess MMO gamers compare the hours they spend on it every month to what they might spend on other new games to keep them occupied that long. And you would expect regular content updates included at that price.

Also, I assume you're talking about the Origin ToS. You don't ever need to install or use Origin as long as you don't buy through Origin. Unlike BF3 it's not tied to the game.

That's a relief. Usually when a big game isn't ready in time for a thanksgiving weekend release the publisher will wait until March for some idiotic reason having to do with fiscal quarters or whatnot. I'm just glad it's coming this year.

8. Re: Op Ed Sep 23, 2011, 20:15 entr0py

Well, console games don't JUST care about ease of use. They care about cost, someone can break into console gaming for $200 rather than maybe $700 for a PC that can handle newly released games. There's also the recurring cost of PC upgrades; you can play the latest games on a 6 year old Xbox 360, but not on a 6 year old PC.

And for me, the ability to rent console games is a huge advantage. With a game that lasts 10 hours you're really better off paying $8 for a rental than $60 to own a new release. They also care about selection, with the quantity and production budget of console exclusives outweighing that of PC exclusives. Also, the vast majority of console games don't have serial numbers, meaning they retain some of their value and there is a market for trading and selling. Again making the hobby more affordable.

I still prefer PC games for all the reasons that everyone else has articulated. But I think you guys tend to sell short the advantages of consoles.
