They don't have enough servers, and quickmatch doesn't work well, but if you know how to work the server browser it doesn't take too long to get in. I've joined maybe 10 servers today, and it's never taken more than 3 minutes of trying.

From battlelog point at multiplayer, then click filter. Set the region filter, then check 1-5 free slots, and check Operation Metro and view servers. Now you can sort by ping or player count. Try servers until you're in.

If they hire Axis Animation to make the film it would be a must-see. Short of that, there's nothing interesting about the Dead Island setting.

You do understand that just firewalling it does not fix the issues right? People have had issues with it just existing. I was one of them till some patches fixed my problems. But others still had tons of issues.

No I didn't know about those issues, I was responding to Elessar's troubles. That would suck. It does make me wonder what sort of deal they've reached with Microsoft to include GFWL. Because it does nothing useful in the game, and it's not designed to be DRM.

I have never had trouble with GFWL either, certainly nothing to compare with the trouble I've had with Steam.

But if you don't want to worry about it updating, you could just block Arkham Asylum and GFWL in your firewall, then create an offline profile. That only takes a couple minutes, so I'm not sure why you'd bother downloading a crack.

It does irritate me that Warner Bros. choose to include GFWL, simply because it does almost nothing. The only online feature of the first game was the time trial leaderboards. And I think it's safe to say that no one in the world cared about that.

If they could fix the combat, I'd love to see another Jade Empire. Fortunately there have been a large number of games since then that have nailed 3rd person brawling. The sub-par gameplay was what kept the first game from becoming a classic. But it was great as far as characters, writing, artwork, player choices and setting.

So it's $60 plus another $78 for the six months I would play it? $138 for a game? Sorry, that's too much for me. Plus: I wouldn't sign the ToS.

Yes, except that one month is included with the initial cost of the game, so that would be for 7 months. You'll find the price is pretty standard with new premium MMOs. It is a lot of money, but I guess MMO gamers compare the hours they spend on it every month to what they might spend on other new games to keep them occupied that long. And you would expect regular content updates included at that price.

Also, I assume you're talking about the Origin ToS. You don't ever need to install or use Origin as long as you don't buy through Origin. Unlike BF3 it's not tied to the game.

That's a relief. Usually when a big game isn't ready in time for a thanksgiving weekend release the publisher will wait until March for some idiotic reason having to do with fiscal quarters or whatnot. I'm just glad it's coming this year.

Well, console games don't JUST care about ease of use. They care about cost, someone can break into console gaming for $200 rather than maybe $700 for a PC that can handle newly released games. There's also the recurring cost of PC upgrades; you can play the latest games on a 6 year old Xbox 360, but not on a 6 year old PC.

And for me, the ability to rent console games is a huge advantage. With a game that lasts 10 hours you're really better off paying $8 for a rental than $60 to own a new release. They also care about selection, with the quantity and production budget of console exclusives outweighing that of PC exclusives. Also, the vast majority of console games don't have serial numbers, meaning they retain some of their value and there is a market for trading and selling. Again making the hobby more affordable.

I still prefer PC games for all the reasons that everyone else has articulated. But I think you guys tend to sell short the advantages of consoles.

Regularly having to respawn right at the back seriously affected the flow of the game in the alpha test. I'm glad they're getting rid of the problem.

The reason for that in the alpha was that 95% of squads were bugged so that there was no squad leader, and no squad spawning possible under any circumstances.

I hope they didn't make that change as well as the change to the objective placements based on the alpha, because the squad leader bug threw everything off.

The new squad system seems fine to me. The limitation of spawning only on the squad leader helps keep the group together. And the 4 man limit means there is a realistic chance of actually eradicating a squad so they have to spawn back at the base.

The only thing that bothers me is that, from what I've heard, in the alpha there was no way to see squads or join specific ones. You'd just hit the "join squad" button and be dumped into a squad at random. Strangely this was coupled with the new ability to join servers as a group with other friends and spawn in a pre-made squad. Hopefully proper squad control was just something they hadn't implemented yet.

I love how more people bitch and moan over the release dates of DLC than the fact there are no mod tools to make our own "DLC".

I don't expect any game I buy to have mod tools any more. If I did, I wouldn't buy any games.

Yup, except I disagree that Quake had a plot.

Quake had Axes.

In the end, that's all that mattered.

Haha, yeah I mean that all of those games had at least one of those qualities; interesting characters, monsters, or plot. With Quake it was the all about the monsters, weapons and ambiance. I still find the Quake monsters far more memorable than the strogg strogg strogg of later installments.

20. Re: Epic Not Working on New Unreal Games Sep 21, 2011, 18:22 entr0py

Exactly, the IP of Unreal does not include any of the things we fondly remember, like the engine, the pretty environments or the tight shooter game-play.

The IP is the story, character and aliens from Unreal and Unreal II. And really, those were not memorable or interesting at all. I remember that the aliens had tusks and wrist blade things, and that the second game featured an attractive girl. I couldn't tell you the name of any character or why I was shooting at aliens for hours. I suspect crystals might have been involved somehow.

This is a stark contrast to other big shooters of the era, like Doom, Quake, Duke Nukem and Half-Life. All of those had memorable characters, monsters or story-lines that are worth following up on.

It would be great if Epic to make another game like Unreal, only set in a more interesting and imaginative world.

There are a couple of early screen shots on the developer's website. Looks early. Honestly, I'm not going to get excited about either of these games unless they get good reviews. Blood Bowl was passable as a low budget game, but it isn't much of a track record.

Though I have to say that being required to Alt-Tab out of the game to join a new MP game through your browser+plugin has to absolutely take the trophy for smoothness.

Creston

It's a bit more awkward, sure but it also works faster than you can swap servers in BC2 or BF2.

I don't think you can alt-tab out. It's designed so that you close the game client every time you leave a server, and restart it every time you join a server. But again as Teddy mentioned, the entire process is still faster than switching servers in any previous Battlefield game. And the web-based server browser has more features than previous in-game browsers. For example, you can join simultaneously with your friends as a squad.

Fallout turned into a good sandbox action-rpg series. I could see a good squad-based X-Com game come out of a setup like that.

As a straight up FPS, no, I'm not interested. That's like the cheapest way out there is.

I don't know, I think I would have liked it better if Bethesda had created a new IP for their "Oblivion with guns" game concept, and kept Fallout a tactical, turn based, overhead-perspective RPG.
