News Comments > BF3 Norwegian Review Shenanigans Alleged [Updated]
18. Re: BF3 Norwegian Review Shenanigans Alleged Oct 18, 2011, 21:16 entr0py

As an ordinary customer I've noticed how review scores start at their absolute highest point and only level out after the game has been out for a week. Even if I didn't know the details, it is obvious that publishers are pulling shenanigans to make sure only the most favorable reviewers get it first.

What irritates me more is that it can only be done with the collusion of gaming sites and magazines, and they are supposed to be on the customer's side.

They don't need to give in to the Pavlovian treatment of publishers. If the sites that got early copies put off their reviews, and replaced them with articles educating customers about quid pro quo early reviews, it would completely foil the practice.

News Comments > DICE: Battlefield 3 Beta "Mission Accomplished"
63. Re: DICE: Battlefield 3 Beta Oct 17, 2011, 18:06 entr0py

Yeah, I think console gamers simply will not accept a full price online-only FPS. For that price, they expect a single-player campaign as well. And I pretty much agree with them.

Back when PC FPS games went from having long single player campaigns plus multiplayer(Duke Nukem, Quake, Unreal)to multiplayer only for the same price (Quake 3, Unreal Tournament) I thought it was a rip off. The Battlefield series was the only exception where the multiplayer content seemed so extensive that it justified the cost. But I doubt I'd feel that way if I was playing on an xbox with smaller maps, fewer players, and a monthly online fee.

Or for a more recent example, look at the failure of Unreal Tournament 3 on consoles compared to the success of Gears of War. Certainly the lack of a true single player component in the former had a lot to do with that.

I was disappointing that the real MP beta, when they opened up lots of Caspian Border servers the last weekend, overlapped exactly with the largest The Old Republic beta event to date. Those are EA's two biggest upcoming releases this year, why make the short weekend betas compete with each other?

6. Re: More Battlefield 3 Map Details Oct 15, 2011, 00:27 entr0py

Battlefield 2 included 12 maps. Battlefield 3 will include 9 at launch, and another 4 about a month later if you preordered. Not that much of a difference from my perspective. But of course it all depends on the quality of the maps, not the quantity.

This reinforces the suspicion that they choose the worst possible map and game type for the Alpha and Beta. Which is good, I don't think I'd be buying if operation metro represented the game.

You do realize that ME2 basically had, for all intents and purposes, always-on DRM, right? That's what the Cerberus network was. Always sign in when you play, and if you can't sign in for whatever reason, such as EA's fucking outsourced-to-Guatamala servers being down, then "fuck you, you can't play the DLC you just bought, you FUCKING PIRATE."

Combine that with the Galaxy at War thing which ties SP and MP together, and that pretty much SCREAMS always-on DRM to me.

Creston

True enough. I never bought any DLC for the game since I believe that nearly all DLC is ridiculously overpriced compared to proper expansion packs. So for me Cerberus network was just a pointless message at the beginning of the game. But, for the DLC at least, that does qualify as always online single player DRM.

God, I hope "Online Pass" for consoles doesn't translate to "Always Online" for PC. I have a sinking feeling it will, however.

It will. Absolutely. I've already resigned myself to that fact.

Creston

While Blizzard is pushing forward with always-online DRM in single player, other publishers have had huge backlashes lately and reversed their stance. The fact that ME3 would have some sort of online pass for consoles went without saying, that's EA's policy, but I don't see why it would suddenly be associated with always online DRM on PCs.

I'm just as sure that the PC version won't require an internet connection for single player as you are that it will. . . You know what that means, a bet is in order.

I don't think there's ever been a big budget western MMOs that started as F2P. It seems like the standard practice is to attempt a boxed game /monthly fee model, then resort to F2P when sales or subscriptions slump.

. . . which he does not say was their best work, but he does call their "best console work," though we can't tell if there was any irony intended with that, as Space Marine is the first Relic game to appear on consoles.

Naw he knows what they've made. He's referring to "The Outfit", an Xbox 360 exclusive game developed by Relic and released in 2006. It actually had some pretty inventive multiplayer, making for a much better stab at a 3rd person action RTS hybrid than Brütal Legend. Unfortunately the overall quality just wasn't high enough, it felt like the rushed 1st gen title it was.

Yeah it seems obvious that the decision to include a multiplayer component was made primarily to ensure second hand console buyers and PC pirates don't get the entire game. They sort of did that with the online pass last game, but it was easily circumvented by PC pirates, and console gamers were unlikely to give a damn about Zeed.

Less Felicia Day, please. I'm sorry, but it's getting to be too much. When I see her in something, I do not go "hey, wow, that's Felicia Day! This bit of entertainment has been immediately elevated!" I instead say "ugh, she's involved in *this* too?"

We get it, Felicia. You're pretty, and a little geeky, and you have a rabid fan base. That doesn't make you a stupendous actress who has to start "diversifying."

Yeah, I think this is aimed at Felicia Day cosplay fans more than at Dragon Age fans. It's also written by her and made by her production company.

Okay now I'm actually feeling old if this is being remade. What's next Battle Chess with the queen in full 3d wiggling her ass as she moves instead of just a sprite based wiggling ass?

Both Leisure Suit Larry and Battle Chess got their first remakes 20 years ago. We are indeed very old.

It seems like it's just a remake. I'm not sure what Al Lowe can do, maybe tell them how to draw the characters. Well, I hope somehow it leads to a new game that doesn't suck.

3. Re: More on Mass Effect 3 Multiplayer Oct 10, 2011, 21:38 entr0py

That's good, it sounds like they won't be devoting too much of their time to the multiplayer. I don't mind there being some multiplayer component as long as 90% of their effort goes into the single player game. That is why people are going to buy it after all. Making multiplayer half the game would have been a terrible mistake.

I can't believe they finally listened to players and opened up some Caspian Border servers. I really thought they were just avoiding that out of spite. "None of you like operation metro? Well too bad that's what's for beta. You should be greatful, there are kids in china who don't even have beta. Now eat your metro." Angry

Those are working quite well on my 1 gig AMD card. It's still a pain in the ass that they didn't include proper menu options, and the automatic options make some bad choices. But the game makes up for it once you've gone to the work of optimizing it.

Part of the trouble is they missed their window, probably due to other projects tying up their developers. Had they been ready to release it six months after the console release it would have done well.

But now that it's 17 months out I doubt it's worth pouring money into. Excitement for console ports only lasts so long, look at the Halo and Gears of War.

So I guess that means they didn't provide review copies ahead of time, or they did on the condition that reviews not be published before launch.

I know that's a terrible sign when it comes to movies, I wonder if the same is true of games.

It's good if they have creative control. But it's hard to imagine that EA isn't in charge of the funding and development window for each game. That was the main problem with DA2, it was rushed.
