edit: configure and update it for BF3. Yeah, it was nice to see they posted a prominent notice on battlelog detailing how to manually update punkbuster. I got the "kicked by administrator" bug on one server, if not for that notice I would have just assumed I was getting kicked to make room for clan members.
It's incredible that after sooo many years they still can't get punkbuster to autoupdate, check for the newest version, or give useful error messages reliably. But at least the update worked and only took a couple minutes. |

They already have a fictionalized version of Los Angeles for the GTA series, Los Santos. I think it would be more interesting if they did a city they've never done before, but I guess the San Andreas setting provides a few iconic cities all in driving distance of each other.
Anyway, I'm just glad they're not waiting for the next console generation. Maybe MS and Sony won't really take 10 years as they've always said, but they're still 2 or 3 years off. |

| Sort of irritating that they would call this 'free DLC', when it's just something they promised all along, but failed to have ready in time for launch. Customers would be justified in being upset that they launched the game before it was finished. But rebranding the missing content 'DLC' is weasel like. |

But if you have access to a VPN service, get yourself an Asian IP address to pass the release date check now. I've been playing since 8AM. Thanks man. I used to know that, but somehow I forgot about the proxy trick for release date checks. Awesome. |

The fact that EA was screening favorable reviewers sort of puts a damper on any metascore that comes from selectively distributed early review copies alone. But you've got to assume that the same is true of every major release.
I'll be interested to see how much the score drops a week from now. Though I still expect it to be good. |

Q: Will I require an Origin account in addition to a SWTOR account?
A: Yes, you will require an active Origin account in addition to a Star Wars: The Old Republic account
Dades wrote on Oct 23, 2011, 22:42: Opinions are like assholes on the internet, yours included. Yours being the biggest.
You're both right in a sense. But more accurately Dades is right.
As stated in that FAQ, TOR requires an Origin account. Which is to say that it requires an EA account. That's all that an Origin account is; they just renamed all EA accounts a while back.
However TOR does not require that you, at any time, install or use the Origin software.
I agree that the FAQ is confusing, because it's easy to assume that any game that requires an Origin/EA account would also require the Origin client. But that ain't the case.

I bet you support Steam just fine though. Although Valve isn't any different than any other publisher. (hint: they're in it for the money) It's sooo difficult to make desktop shortcuts to applications oh the horror. It's all about the timing. Steam has had a lot of time to get established, not to mention polished, and over that time has won over a whole lot of gamers. I mean, how long ago was it that Half Life 2 was released?
EA missed the boat. I don't even fire up Impulse anymore. It's Steam or nothing. EA has had their own digital distribution software, EA Downloader, since 2005, a couple years after Steam was released. And it did the basic job of delivering games, without ever needing to run in the background. But they didn't cram it down people's throats by integrating it with any games.
However, those heavy handed tactics pioneered by Valve and MS have paid off hugely. Because ultimately, many gamers are willing to put up with that shit if we really like a game. And I'm no different. I grudgingly put up with Steam to play Half-Life 2 and a handful of games since, and I'll do the same with Origin as long as it works and stays out of the way.

I hope they take a bath on it, the scum.

Yeah, like $60 of that is the figure. Seems insane to regular people, but it's in line with other star wars figures that company makes. Just remember, you can never take it out of the box or it will lose all it's value. |

It doesn't need to be leaked, as mentioned in the article "The single-player section of the demo will be available to all players on day one of the demo launch."
But the multiplayer bit will be locked down to account privileges, like a beta, just getting the client won't get you in.
I do think it's super lame when companies use pay for beta schemes, and pay for demo schemes are even worse. . . Actually, I don't know why they don't just call this a beta. I see no difference between this and the battlefield 3 early access beta (which turned out to be exactly 48 hours).

Are you kidding? CoH pioneered nearly all of the gameplay changes between DoW 1 and 2. Including smaller and more versatile squads, a quick retreat button, directional cover, highly destructible terrain, multi-player based around resource points and victory points, devastating infantry suppression, location based damage on tanks, ect.
Yeah, it had base building which DoW II lacks. But personally I never actually enjoyed building all the structures that build units, then managing half a dozen different queues. Constantly jumping back and forth on the map between dull, repetitive base building and managing battles was irritating when only one of those activities was enjoyable. |

Also, as mentioned earlier, EA has already admitted to and apologized over it. It's only the details of exactly who was sent the questionnaire that are in question, not that EA-Norway sent one out.
So, no it's not an Activision conspiracy. Sounds like either the reporter, Alexander Fuller of NRK, or his source, Snorre Bryne of Dagbladet, made an incorrect assumption about which sites got the questionnaire. The article describes gamereactor and gamer.no as "sister sites" of dagbladet, whatever that means in business speak.

As an ordinary customer I've noticed how review scores start at their absolute highest point and only level out after the game has been out for a week. Even if I didn't know the details, it is obvious that publishers are pulling shenanigans to make sure only the most favorable reviewers get it first.
What irritates me more is that it can only be done with the collusion of gaming sites and magazines, and they are supposed to be on the customer's side.
They don't need to give in to the Pavlovian treatment of publishers. If the sites that got early copies put off their reviews, and replaced them with articles educating customers about quid pro quo early reviews, it would completely foil the practice. |

Yeah, I think console gamers simply will not accept a full price online-only FPS. For that price, they expect a single-player campaign as well. And I pretty much agree with them.
Back when PC FPS games went from having long single player campaigns plus multiplayer(Duke Nukem, Quake, Unreal)to multiplayer only for the same price (Quake 3, Unreal Tournament) I thought it was a rip off. The Battlefield series was the only exception where the multiplayer content seemed so extensive that it justified the cost. But I doubt I'd feel that way if I was playing on an xbox with smaller maps, fewer players, and a monthly online fee.
Or for a more recent example, look at the failure of Unreal Tournament 3 on consoles compared to the success of Gears of War. Certainly the lack of a true single player component in the former had a lot to do with that. |

| I was disappointing that the real MP beta, when they opened up lots of Caspian Border servers the last weekend, overlapped exactly with the largest The Old Republic beta event to date. Those are EA's two biggest upcoming releases this year, why make the short weekend betas compete with each other? |

| Battlefield 2 included 12 maps. Battlefield 3 will include 9 at launch, and another 4 about a month later if you preordered. Not that much of a difference from my perspective. But of course it all depends on the quality of the maps, not the quantity. |
