News Comments > Oculus Responds to ZeniMax Accusations

Let's cut the bullshit on "VR".

When it comes, it will be a hardware piece no different than your monitor. It's not going to be some "platform" like a game console. It's just a display unit, nothing more.

I'm still not certain VR is going to take of in the short-term, as there are still major hurdles to overcome in regards to input. It's hard to sell something as "virtual reality" when you still control things with a keyboard and mouse.

Its also kind of sad that Zenimax owns both id, and Bethsoft. id I couldnt care less about, since the original people have pretty much left it a rotting corpse of a company. Bethsoft I kind of care about as they still produce nice TES games, hopefully they will go on doing so, but after TESO dies in a few months or so I wouldnt be in the least surprised if the honchos running the show at ZeniMax decide to pull the plug on yet another great franchise.

The other day it sort of hit me that Zenimax now owns: Doom, Quake, Wolfenstein, and Fallout.

As the Dude would say, "That's a bummer, man."

We live in a world where Zenimax/Bethesda owns Doom, Quake, Wolfenstein, Fallout, and are claiming they own the work John Carmack has done while working on VR tech for Facebook.

Have a nice day.

Yet another reason id Software never should have sold out to Zenimax in the first place.

As much as I'd like be against what Zenimax is doing here, it sure sounds like legally they have the upper hand here. The fact that Luckey is on record as acknowledging their ownership of Carmack's work is a silver bullet for Zenimax.

You can pretty much forget about them ever doing an open source release of Tech5.

Well after civilization falls, you have to have some way to transfer your funds to Lord Humungus to keep his army at bay for another week.

Call me crazy but I'd rather them put that "an irresponsible amount" of money into the damned game, and not some trinket.

They claimed to fix SLI support but it is still broken.

One month in, and no SLI support on a Source engine game. Not impressed.

Clearly if you don't have 15 dollars on a card you don't deserve to play the game you just paid 60 for. You're obviously broke, a loser, and need to get a job.

Or maybe you use pre-paid cards so companies can't double bill your actual bank account.

I'm not going to lie, they won me over with that 2.0 patch. The game is truly a lot of fun now, and I don't regret getting the expansion at all. Adventure mode is a lot of fun.

I never thought I'd be saying that, either. This is a rare case where I think Blizzard got the message, and listened to the fans. The game feels like it was made by people that actually like the Diablo games now.

Leno had better ratings than Letterman, and Justin Beiber sells more albums than Tool.

Just because you win the pop contest, doesn't mean you're the best.

I didn't realize Runic had bloated into a huge corporate dev house with large-scale development going on.

You seem to be confusing Direct3D with DirectX. OpenGL can't do sound or input.

As for OpenGL, as it's older than D3D, it's interesting that it's not in wider use. Why might that be? I was playing more games in OGL in the 90s than now.

Honestly it's because the committee that steers development of OpenGL put the focus on the wrong things during a crucial time in the early-mid 2000's, and OpenGL fell behind what Direct X 10 was doing. It didn't doom the API, but it made people weary of learning how to use it.

Now it's right there on par with DX10-11, which is why we've seen many more games using it, and Linux support is starting to really take off again. Between SDL, OpenGL, and Pulse Audio, Linux basically has everything Direct X offers.

It really is amazing that they have the nerve to put DRM on a movie that had to be fan-funded. Greedy assholes.

Great news! Valve gave Linux gaming the shot in the arm it needed, and it's nice to see it taking off.
