AMD cards are the only ones that still sound like jet engines. Since the GeForce 400 series, NVIDIA has actually been improving the power consumption and thermal output by a lot. For instance, I used GTX 460s in SLI for a long time and they are usually whisper quiet, only going up to regular noise (like just bit above ambient case fan volume) under load. Maybe it gets moderately loud when you're doing some serious shit that warms it up to the 90 degrees C range... Generally if you're hearing the fans roar, something is wrong. But if it's hearing the fan noise at all that bothers you, look into the models with higher quality heatsink/fans, rather than those that stick with the reference design. There are plenty out there that are completely inaudible while keeping the card cooler than it needs to be.
