Halo of limiting players to two weapons and recharging health have changed the FPS.

I'm sure there are earlier examples, but Trespasser did those way before Halo.

I'd prefer the approach in track-IR supported shooters. ie your head movements only rotate view relative to where you're aiming (which is still controlled by your mouse/gamepad).

I too agree that while it may be competitively priced (compared to other tablet/pc things) it's not really worth the money. I'm sure there are people out there who'd pay $1k for this thing, but I'm definitely not one of them.

Too bad it's not sci-fi themed like other Sins games. MOBA in space is something that could actually stand out.

The thing that impresses me the most about this thing is how competitively priced it is (well, compared to ultrabooks and surface pro at least). Given their history with Razer Blade I did not expect that.

What .000001% of gamers use it and that's real proof of success?

Streaming video/audio is already acceptable for gaming - OnLive (if you live near their servers) and WiiU are proof of that. In fact there are plenty tests online that shows WiiU's streaming is even faster than low latency TVs (over wifi, no less!).

The new Total Recall movie was remarkably bad. They took all these events from the original movie but strung together in completely different situations so they end up becoming glaring plot holes.

For example (spoiler!), the whole reason Quaid had his memories wiped is supposed to be because the leader of the resistance's a psychic who may spot out spies. The leader is not a psychic in the new movie, so why go through the trouble?

The GPL is not the same as the BSD, and that is why Apple went with the BSD one. It suited them better.

As I said, last I knew, not it is this. From what I read it was, this is why Darwin code its available but why it can't be compiled into a working OS because only what its needed to be open sourced is.

Now, instead of acting like a little bitch, could you stop swearing at me and explain the differences and why Darwin is open sourced but not complete? Or do you have no idea? I took a quick look at the BSD license before my last response and from what I read, it works pretty much the same as GPL.

BSD: you can modify and add new features to existing open source project, close it off, and sell it.

GPL: you can't. your changes must be open and in same GPL licence.

The Big Picture mode was laggy and took forever to load anything, so I disabled automatic proxy as per reddit's advice - and what a difference! Everything loads instantly and super snappy.

And yet, his "findings" are questioned by most medical experts and are not confirmed by one study. Not one. HFCS and cane sugar are processed differently by our bodies. That lecture is a viral video and contains as much junk science as 2 weeks worth of shitty news media coverage.

I'm guessing you just wiki'ed his name.
He's not some get-rich-quick self-help-diet book writer (although I guess now he became one after that lecture went viral). But doesn't matter - even discarding the lecture altogether, sugar cane sugar essentially turns into HFCS in your body anyway (unless your body can't generate sucrase).

edit: if you want more detail, HFCS is about half glucose and half fructose, separate. Sugar cane sugar (sucrose) is half glucose and half fructose, chemically bonded but broken to component parts (exactly the same as HFCS) by sucrase during digestion.
When your body absorbs them, it doesn't know the difference (again, unless you don't generate enough sucrase due to genetic disorder or whatever).

Here's the famed lecture about sugar and obesity. He makes a point during the lecture that HFCS is no worse than (or more accurately, equally as bad as) sugar cane table sugar because our bodies process them the exact same way.

its a few lines of config to dissmiss the metro shell on boot. Its also hardly taxing to manually dissmiss it. Metro is more like a start menu/task/widget manager than a full shell.

A tiny bit more complicated than that: you need to create a shortcut and set up the task scheduler to launch shortcut upon boot:
how-to-boot-to-the-desktop-skip-metro-in-windows-8

Most people wouldn't know how, or even bother (like you said, the desktop is just a single tap/swipe away) and I bet that's what Microsoft is counting on.
Although I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft added the option themselves due to overwhelming complaints. Remember how the free version of Visual Studio 2012 wouldn't allow desktop apps to be created (only Metro apps) until there was a huge outcry on social media? It's not too late for them to change their mind.

Microsoft allows you to make in-app purchase externally to the Windows Store (app certification [4.7]); although it doesn't explicitly state so, that should avoid Microsoft taking a cut of the transaction (the same goes for ads). The trade-off is that the user is prompted every time an external transaction is made. However, if you are indeed correct - which is a distinct possibility - then that would have to be a breach of competition law, at least in the EU. Afterall, Microsoft is already being investigated by the EU for not allowing other browsers onto Windows RT. Otherwise it would be HUGELY destructive for the entire industry.

Oh cool, I didn't know they allowed 3rd party transactions - although as Verno mentioned Microsoft gets final say on what's allowed or not.

Apple is inching towards similar model with their latest OSX (Mountain Lion) - it won't allow you to install apps that aren't digitally signed by Apple. If you want to run unsigned apps, you have to opt out of the Gatekeeper service (assuming users are tech-savvy enough to know what that is). Their excuse is the same as Microsoft's: keep malware out and make the system more secure.

I do hope Microsoft gets into trouble by breach of competition law, as you said, but I'm not familiar with the law to know if that will be the case. Is it still considered anti-competitive when Windows 8 isn't out yet and its marketshare and dominance is yet to be seen?

Clint Eastwood would say "They better build a Win 8 front end for Steam then". Or is that something not possible?

Under current Windows 8 Metro, apps and games have to be digitally signed and certified by Microsoft and installed by MS's Marketplace service. So I wouldn't say it's impossible, but Valve and Microsoft must work out a deal, either to allow Steam storefront to distribute Marketplace games or get Steam games to be signed and approved by Microsoft (and take additional cut of the revenue). I don't see either happening because Microsoft is likely to promote their own distribution service over Steam.

edit: oh if you meant just a Metro live tile that takes you to desktop and launches Steam, then yeah I guess that's much more likely to happen - although Microsoft has the final say on whether that's acceptable or not.

edit2: I just realized what you meant: a Metro Steam app that lets you browse the store and buy games, and possibly allow you to remotely download the games on desktop in the background? I think that's within terms of service (unless, again, Microsoft doesn't allow it), but that would be considered an in-app purchase and Microsoft will take 20% to 30% cut of each transaction (which Valve wouldn't like).

I'm interested to know what evidence and logic Gabe can offer for his statements about Windows 8.

It doesn't matter how good or bad Win8 is. The fact that steam isn't allowed on metro is reason enough to despise it from Gabe's perspective.
(Win8 only boots into metro, no option to go to desktop by default, and windows marketplace is the only digital distribution service allowed. Period. If you want steam you must switch to desktop which is now brushed aside as legacy by Microsoft with no guaranteed future support)

If I didn't have a tablet already I'd order one in a heartbeat. By far the most impressive thing about it is its low low price, despite using seemingly hi-quality components.

Also... 7" sounds a tad too small. All the demos they showed so far were done in portrait orientation, which is suitable for smaller form factors like this. I just hope Google isn't going to recommend or mandate portrait presentation for app developers going forward, because that's definitely not my preferred way to hold tablets.

I have a feeling that Indilynx controllers are a lost cause - they're poor performers and OCZ is trying to compensate for their faults with ridiculous amount of cache and overclocked controllers (at the cost of increased power consumption). Vertex 4 is competitive right now, but I don't think they can keep this up for much longer.
