News Comments > Retailer Leaks Dead Space 3 and NFS: Most Wanted 2 Hints
17. Re: Retailer Leaks Dead Space 3 and NFS: Most Wanted 2 Hints Apr 18, 2012, 13:05 MoreLuckThanSkill

Dammit. Dead Space 1 and 2 are unfortunately two of my favorite games, all time.

I am going to have a hard time resisting a decently made Dead Space 3, unless EA goes all out with their usual bullshit. Although I did wait until Dead Space 2 was about 85% off on a Gamersgate sale, and I bought Dead Space 1 for like 1.99 from one of those clearance sales... bah.

Ok... this is getting ridiculous.

While I have been eagerly awaiting a completed Dead State, surely not EVERY FUCKING GAME REQUIRES A KICKSTARTER.

How many donations/investments/preorders do these 'companies' honestly expect people to make? How the hell can NONE of these people get any funding through normal channels? Is it truly so bad that the only way to fund games, aside from the next CoD or whatever, is to beg for money?

I'm starting to picture the Indie scene shifting from self made success stories like the Minecraft guy(s) or better yet the Trine guys, to a bunch of Salvation Army bell ringers, standing next to a bus terminal.

/rant

Sigh.

Looking forward to the retail release of Dead State, good luck Iron Tower Studios.

Why bother with Diablo III Beta. Played Diablo III Beta till the end of Act I. But, I found Path of Exile to be a much better experience. I tried Path of Exile for the first time, when they opened up the beta as a buy-in a couple of weeks ago.

(and: I am not associated with the developers).

Just my 2 cents....

Michael

To be fair, the Diablo 3 beta is about the first THIRD of the first Act, maybe less. It is NOT the entire first Act.

Also, I have the Path of Exile beta myself... I am a bit underwhelmed currently, but I'll probably keep trying updates, since it's free to play.

Currently Diablo 3 is much more playable, in my opinion.

Hrm, this may be the first Kickstarter I actually contribute to... I am really looking forward to Grim Dawn. I definitely want to speed up their publicly announced timeline of sometime mid to late 2013.. for the BETA, lol.

That said, people in this thread are angry that there is no Paypal support?!? Last time I checked, Paypal is still the semi-bank without regulation who refuses to give people their funds for no apparent reason whatsoever... why do people like them again? It's not like there are no good alternatives, either. Amazon payments, Moneybookers, google, etc.

You need to read about what a Ponzi Scheme actually is before you start comparing it to Kickstarter. This isn't an investment scheme, it's a donation. There is never a promise on a return of your investment, so it's as far away from a Ponzi Scheme as you can possibly get.

Well, I don't agree that these are "donations," as there is a list of items/features you will receive if you send in X dollars. That would SEEM to be a promised return on the investment/donation, if obviously not a return in straight cash. Maybe it would be better to just call some Kickstarter projects scams/cash grabs? I did do some research on the Kickstarter stuff though, pretty interesting. The overall success rate is around 45%, WAY higher than I thought it was going to be. I assume there is a fairly detailed vetting process before they get to put up a Kickstarter page.

Also, yeah $400k sounds of whack to me, Beamer. But I guess when you break it down to salaries/other overhead it makes more sense. My gripe was more on 400k for 2D, when arguably 2D is more labor intensive and expensive, depending on how they do it, than some cheaper 3D engine they could license for $500-$10,000.

For everybody's sake, I hope this project succeeds. It just shocks me that multiple people already sent in over 10 grand.

Lol, I like how the TEC world is jampacked with turrets and fighter bays, around the starbase. Just like my slow expand -turtlish playstyle.

Still, the beta on Steam seemed a long way off from a finished product.

While this sounds great(Shadowrun is one of my favorite game settings/universes), the whole Kickstarter for games thing is just starting to sound like Ponzi scheme instead of any sort of real funding plan.

Also, as others have said, 2d? For 400,000 dollars?

I guess I shouldn't be too amazed that people donate to these things, after all people donate to random religious conmen on TV all the time.

Dammit. Loved the first one, and coop in this could be utterly hilarious/amazing/infuriating. Now I am required to not only buy this sequel, but spread the OMD madness to all my friends.

Also, earning skull upgrades from 'old' already solve maps... well it'll make upgrading very easy, but this is already a casual game so no big deal I guess.

Because steam has no control over pricing from other publishers. Beth sets pricing from skyrim. Beth would be stupid to lower the price as long as it is selling so well at full price. They tried a 30% off sale and are obviously satisfied to keep it at full price a while longer.

Well yes, to this and the other replies, if you want to bring accursed LOGIC into it. Still, I'm inclined to wait for the price drop, if only because I still have a ton of games on my plate from OTHER sales. Plus, Diablo 3 looming on the horizon...

Finally got sick of waiting for the completely DRM free Trine 2, bought it on the Steam 50% off sale...

holy SHIT this game is gorgeous. I wonder how many of the same artists are still at Frozenbyte from their Shadowgrounds days?

This game is simply beautiful, and surprisingly fun, only a few levels in and it seems well advanced in all aspects on Trine 1.

In other news, why is Skyrim not 9.99 yet? Come on, Steam!

The cool part of no gold in Path of Exile and you trade items for items, is that you get to a point early enough on knowing you have enough parts for trading for a while. Then when you are hunting and come across loot, you keep what can help and leave the rest instead of hording it and making run backs to the merchant every few minutes. Thinking I may need another million gold for whoever knows what.

Well, I wouldn't mind this barter system so much if players got a skill to ID items or something, because it bugs my OCD to not be able to ID every single blue/yellow item I run across. As it is now, it is not financially possible to do so, which bugs me personally to no end.

If there is a skill or NPC/quest to ID items, I have missed it so far, in Act II.

Hawk, just because.

This can't come out soon enough.

OT: Anyone playing the Path of Exile beta? Thoughts?

Path of Exile is currently in an open beta weekend. After this weekend, those characters will be available (supposedly) once it goes live, or you get into closed beta before live release.

That said, I'm in the closed beta now, and... Path of Exile currently is mediocre at best. The skill system is fairly interesting, but the passive skill map is more cumbersome than cool, in my opinion. I need to do some hard research on the viability of armor vs hp vs dodge vs energy shield for example, before I feel comfortable leveling up in certain paths. This is a good thing long term, but this information is NOT available in game, and only sporadically online, and of course it is changing over the course of the beta anyway.

Combat in PoE is arguably less fun than D3, at least on a Marauder(think Barbarian). The abilities are fun, right up until you try the leaping attack, and see your guy hover slowly for a few seconds. This is more of an animation issue I guess, but the targeting is off also.

Still, it's early beta, I will continue to play PoE and try other classes. It has potential, at least.

The money/barter system is somewhat annoying at first, I blew through many of my ID scrolls before I realized they were the main currency in the game. I'd rather have gold honestly, it makes it a gamble simply to ID a random blue(magic item)... not fun.

*Note* Content is currently limited to just the first two acts.

Hrm, not quite as bad as I expected, but not as good as I was hoping. So basically at least a year away from something approaching retail... still, this game looks good, and I'm halfway convinced I should buy a key now to give them some funding.

I'm looking forward to this a lot more ever since I got into the Path of Exile beta, and was somewhat underwhelmed.

Sooo... we should be expecting a Kingdoms of Amalur-ish game when all is said and done, with some WH40k flavorings?

I am still planning on picking up KoA when it drops below 10 dollars, the demo was relatively fun.

News Comments > Battlefield 3 PC Patched
32. Re: Battlefield 3 PC Patched Mar 30, 2012, 16:14 MoreLuckThanSkill

Ok, I put in about 6 hours with the new patch. AA was nerfed by about 45% percent, damage wise vs infantry, from what people are telling me from examining game files. This seems to be correct, as I am definitely having to hose down people for 3-4 seconds, lucky headshots aside, before they drop. Still, the AA is almost the most mobile land vehicle, you can easily dodge non-laser guided missiles, and those you can just pop smoke and gamble on to miss you anyway. I had no problems after an initial adjustment period, killing infantry/jeeps. Personally I feel this AA nerf was too much, but the AA is still usable. My 50-0 has become about 25-1, and that's mostly because of the HUGE nerf to repair speeds.

However the AA did receive an accuracy buff(at the start of firing) and either that or also a buff vs aircraft, or aircraft just take more damage from the AA fire. I was able to kill multiple jets and choppers easily with about 2/3 to 3/4 of the AA "clip.

HMGs are beastly now, and honestly I was already a fan of them in previous patches. I shot down a chopper with a Growler(US jeep) last night..that was simply not feasible in earlier patches. Coaxial HMGs on tanks are ridiculous, aircraft and infantry take serious damage/get one shot with ease, and Coaxial HMGs have no overheat period.

Suppression... is annoying as hell. Fake realism has no place in games, it's not a fun mechanic, in my opinion. Too strong in this patch probably, but it's just become more of shoot first game than previously. Oh well.

Tanks are too easily disabled, and with the repair nerf, entirely too hard to repair solo. Teamwork you say? It happens occasionally, on pubs, but usually if 2+ people are outside of the tank repairing, instead of one staying inside to defend, they will die anyway. Tank armor reduction + repair changes was overkill. Still, I did very well in tanks, with the HMG damage increase, they are more of a glass cannon now than in previous patches.

As far as the infantry weapon changes, meh. Engineer guns across the board seem to be less effective at range, saw a lot more snipers but I don't walk around outside of armor much at all, so it wasn't an issue for me.

This is actually something I WANTED. I wanted more realism in the fact I thought it was absolutely 100% fucking ridiculous I could fire a M249 at someone and get head shot through the Supression even though I've already hit the person with 5 rounds. And then get to watch as they go prone behind cover with 25% health left.

There is no realism in BF3. That being said, the M249 is possibly the worst of the MGs available, use the M60, M240, or PKP Pecheneg... they are far better than the M249.

Well, interesting patch in terms of intent, but they seem to have:

1) nerfed the hell out of AA vs infantry, to my everlasting regret. You literally have to shoot an enemy soldier for about 4-5 seconds to kill them now... completely ridiculous. Boo! It was probably too strong before, now it is too far in the other direction.

2) Buffed the hell out of the already strong(in my opinion) coaxial HMG on tanks, I am shooting down choppers and jets with that thing easily now, not to mention annihilating infantry with it. Yay!

3) Haven't played a ton yet, but yes, missiles seem to not be tracking any aircraft at all now, flares or no flares.
