News Comments > Gabe Newell on EA vs. Steam
57. Re: Gabe Newell on EA vs. Steam Aug 18, 2011, 09:10 007Bistromath

I'm conflicted. On the one hand, I like Steam, and I don't like Origin, and I am so annoyed about this nonsense that I'm probably going to miss BF3, which I was really excited about. Depending on how much they screw with Bioware's existing systems, (which are already pretty annoying) I may even miss ME3, which I have been hungry for.

On the other hand, everytime Gabe Newell talks these days, he sounds more like he's trying to inherit Steve Jobs' reality distortion field. Take this advice from another heavy guy: it's not going to work, Gabe. You're too fat.

That's great and all, but uh... Too late. I don't even play BlOps anymore. Haven't for quite a while, never bothered buying the expansions. I even liked BlOps, I'm just... done with it. Don't want more of the same, which is what CoD by any name will always be.

Maybe this surprise pro-consumer move will spur EA to unscrew themselves about what they're doing with BF3? That'd be good news.

That's great news and all, but it'd be nice to have an answer to the important part of the question. Is it still canon?

God I wish somebody would hire away Ubisoft's dev talent. Everything they turn out is gold, I can't just not buy it. But their management... jesus wept.

There is ZERO need to be constantly connected. This is just another Acti-Bliz ploy to blahblahblah
With any other game, you'd have a point, but with Diablo II, it was more like "there is ZERO reason to make an offline character." Same deal here, only you don't have the option of doing something that had no purpose to begin with. Nothing to complain about.

Now, with Diablo II, there were alot of people who played offline or on private online systems so they could screw around with the mechanics of the game. It will be alot harder to do that with D3, but ultimately, somebody's going to figure out how to circumvent the lockdown pretty fast, and people will be able to do what they've always done.

Blizzard has done some stupid things since Activision bought them, but I wouldn't count this as part of that. They're just taking how things worked in Diablo II and making it more robust.

Did anybody else reading that automatically mentally replace "even more ways to play" with "even fewer servers worth playing on?"

Since computers are deterministic machines, there are reasons why this is happening to you. It's not magic and you should look into them.

Those are the words of somebody who has never had to debug a program or resolve a hardware issue more complex than improper seating, of that I am certain.

As for it not doing anything though I do see people kicked from Bad Company 2 servers frequently for using hacks.
I've seen a bunch more not get kicked. People think PB works because it tells you when it does something. VAC does its job quietly, which I much prefer.

Sweet! I can finally choose between something that mostly works and is always polite, or something that barely works at all and frequently breaks my games! This is a bold move and I fully support it. Maybe by giving players the chance to compare them side by side, they will finally realize how completely goddamn stupid and useless Failbuster is.

The key phrase here is "provided the customer has a receipt."

I'm pretty sure the only people who still have the receipt for a DNF pre-order from more than a year ago are the ones who framed it.

RPGs are about choice and consequence. If you choose to focus on certain stats over others, you must face the consequence of not being proficient in some areas. If you can respec, these consequences do not exist because you always just change your stats whenever needed.
Except that respeccing usually comes with some kind of significant cost which pretty well represents the research/acquisitions concept I was talking about. Don't forget that RP stands for Role Playing; having your choices artificially restricted is not a reasonable consequence. The total inability of a character in a system without respecs to occasionally change direction to adapt to new situations is largely a limitation of abstraction, not a desirable trait.

I'm all for no respec. It defeats the whole point of character development if you can change your stats at any time.
You don't really know what character development is, do you? The idea that a character researching new topics in their field or buying new specialist equipment or whatever somehow harms the narrative is...

Well, I'm just thinking maybe you should get a copy of Urquhart's plaque.

Sad that a game with no redeemable qualities sells so well, and so many awesome games never break even.
Its name is it's redeeming quality. If you don't think the word "sniper" can sell a million by itself, you don't know shooter kids very well.
