Makes me sad all the DLC is for time limited stuff. This game basically begs for a sandbox game-mode of some description. Where you only job is to survive in an changing environment for as long as possible, with hunger/thirst/sleep mechanic...

Freelancer though massively over-hyped was still one of the greatest space games ever made though.

Anyway, as long as Squadron 42 is delivered with cinematic production values (And we know Cry-Engine is up for that) then they make what I wanted out of it...

And for the rest, I assume the tiny closed levels currently are exactly the way they are because the MAJOR part of the game, which requires massive engine modifications, new netcode, new simulation and new AI, is nowhere near to being playable for normal players. And since everything is modular (And Arena Commander is supposed to be the "combat simulator" module that is basically the training mode) we are getting an early peek, but nothing even remotely like the full game.

And that's how game development is. Some parts are done early, some parts take forever. And boarding itself is a module that you need to take into account when making art, and when coding the engine. It's impossible to "patch that in" later. FPS module and every single SHIP making (both from Squadron 42 and the other teams) has to coordinate on getting this to work....

Not directed at me, but...
I'll play it when they patch in what they said they would day 2 after release. They have gone completely radio silent at this point and I look at it as if no patch has been released because the one they did have did nothing if not create more issues.

I finished the game with nary a problem.

Thousands did, thousand finished a game you didn't like. My point is most acknowledge bad controls, they did day 2, said they'd fix and then nothing. Or put it another way... you've knocked games for less around here I'm sure. EA isn't living up on their end. Don't defend it.

You have a point That patch is still MIA... and that's a pretty fucking bit MIA considering when they promised it'd come

Needle and the damage done?

Yeah, stereo needle and huge fucking speakers.

Actually, there is a need for HD audio. There is a big difference between 128k and 256k audio but you need a quality stereo to notice and the right music.

This, this and more this. The quality we are fed streaming is good for headsets. But you put it on the stereo with speakers and crank it, most of it breakdown pretty badly, You can sense the low bit rate. Ripping CD's if not using CD's is still where it is at if you have the need to blast through speakers. I still have that need.

That said, who do you guys feel has the best quality downloads/streams?

Youtube in HD 720p -> 384 kbps AAC-LE

When music is uploaded that way, it sounds awesome. Which is why youtube is REALLY popular for music videos. The quality is far above mp3 and that bitrate makes it so you can *not* tell a difference.. assuming the source audio was uncompressed... just remember to always set to HD, because without hd the sound is 128kbps...

Even though I am major RPG fan Geneforge, Avadon and Avernum always just bored me to tears. I can handle grind and that, I mean when there is a point. But the story in these games is so off-hand, so dry. There is literally no immersion.

I think it's good he makes what likes to make, but for me these are not shining examples of good CRPG's....

How long did it take to develop:
GTA V, World Of Warcraft, Destiny, The Witcher 3, Guild Wars 2, Call of Duty games and so on?
Most AAA games take 4-5 years to make. Most games suffer release delays. Many crowdfunded projects and games have suffered delays and still did well when released. Divinity Original Sin. Wasteland 2 and so on.
In fact the kickstarter projects with a higher chance of success usually come from veteran developers. In fact most projects fail.

As you point out. SC has the funds. Has the talent. It continues to show progress on the project. The fact that they are financially stable is precisely why they have a better chance of success than many other projects.

I actually BACKED Star Citizen since 1/2013 to the tune of $930. I absolutely want this game to succeed but at the same time I'm not drinking the Kool-Aid that CIG keeps releasing. I look at this project with a very critical eye. If I see something I don't like I ask in the Star Citizen forums. Unfortunately most of my threads have either been bashed by fellow backers, closed by the Moderators or out-right removed. There was an organization that did stuff like this in the past too: They were called the Nazi party. In Chris Roberts' New World Order there is NO DISSENT. If you dissent you will be silenced.

TL;DR You're not on robertsspaceindustries.com. You can tell us what your REAL feelings are about Star Citizen. No one will silence you here.

P.S. Blue can you tell us if Comet has an email ending in @cloudimperiumgames.com or @robertsspaceindustries.com ? The history looks very suspicious. Like this person is employed by CIG as their resident social media person.

The RSI forums are by far the most insane fanboy slum I ever saw. At this point you might as well forget asking any real question there.. which is really sad ;(

I don't think the powers that be even realize how much damage this does to the feedback they receive. Because if all you have is yes-sayers then you never gonna be told where the real problems are.

You'll note that no one from the Americas was there, either.

Considering some of the names on there (turkey...) and their track record on press freedom that may have been a conscious decision. For EU leaders it was no option to stay away (especially not for UK/Germany) since France is close enough and has nearly the same problems as all the other big nations in the EU.

Anyway, I think on that list are more leaders that are against press freedom than there are for it... pretty fucking sad that they to use such a tragedy for their political gain.

REHD is going to bring back great feelings of the golden age of pc gaming. Seems to be a great new theme, especially with devs making games like D:OS and Wasteland 2. Now is the new "best time" to be a pc gamer.

Wha? RE was never a PC series. Some of the games were ported to PC but they were console games first and foremost. Make no mistake, I think now is a great time for PC gaming but "RE" and "golden age of pc gaming" don't really have anything to do with each other.

Who said anything about it being a pc series? Replaying it on the pc will remind me of the golden years of pc gaming because the last time I played it was in '97 (one of the best years for pc gaming) on my pc! (not on console)

Just a weird association, I guess. When I think of the golden age of PC gaming, I think of Fallout, Planescape: Torment, Baldur's Gate, Quake, Duke 3D, Mechwarrior, Interstate 76, Carmageddon, etc.

Settlers.. Doom... Wolfenstein.. ?

Because aside from Chris Taylor's experience 20 years ago making space sims...

See, it is coming. Chris Taylor is on board for the RTS module of Star Citizen. I KNEW IT!!!

Not sure I see a problem with that. IT WOULD BE AWESOME.

Justly deserved mocking for posting before coffee.

But actually I always thought that a modern day space sim could seriously use a fleet commander seat like Homeworld or Ender's Game.

Fleet commander would be in charge of assigning waypoints and target priority, backup, etc... As a pilot, you have a "score" split between pilot ability and how readily you follow orders. If we're doing open matchups commanders can decide if they want hotshots or team players. At the end of every engagement, wingmen get to thumbs up or thumbs down their commander. If more than one commander wants to command a battle (and it's not big enough for multiple commanders), then whoever has the highest community rating wins the commander's seat.

In something like a guild this would be far more structured. Voice comms would let you talk to your wing and to your wing commander. Wing commanders talk to each other and command. Command talks to wing commanders.

In a basically MMO scenario like this you could probably request escalation/support at the command level, bringing in more commanders at risk of more resources gambled on the fight. Sort of like a doubling cube in backgammon.

I'd also break down guilds into smaller options. Fleets of course for the big guilds, but for the smaller guilds let them fly as merc wings that can be drafted into the fight. Potentially neutral mercs that can be drafted by either side.

The problem is that fleet commanders would end up being very hands off, and that's something I'm not sure if people would be ready for. I guess you could give them limited control over cap ships and defenses and whatnot to keep things a little more interesting, but generally speaking you have to do a whole lotta back-seat driving.

To solve the last problem you could make the fleet commander command the flag-ship for added pressure/excitement and I mean hands-on control, with avatar on bridge and all Meaning a losing battle would mean the commander is under direct attack and so there is some investment and deciding factors involved in where to move the flagship and how to protect it via orders.

Overall, that game mode would never work on pubs though...

So uh, why do they need a KS?

People need to get used to seeing this. Projects following the Kickstarter model will rarely be successful enough to fund a second project. Unless your project is a rare runaway success, you're probably going to have to go back to Kickstarter for your next project.

I see this a lot on Blue's where people seem to think that a moderately successful Kickstarter project ensures some kind of future for your company. In reality they have three choices.

1) Call it quits after one project.

2) Sell out to some publisher.

3) Go back to Kickstarter.

A lot of people around here seem to prefer that companies just disband and never come around ever again if their successful Kickstarter project doesn't fund their company's future.

Nah I don't want them to disband, my point is they used the money they had for gifts to backers at a point where that was absurd and on the back of real customers with much needed cash that they needed to survive.

I admit I thought this game had enough sales to finance next game easily....

I think FVA was also why Kunos Simulazioni decided to sod it and make Assetto Corsa without publisher meddling and with mod support. And I hear AC is one of the few racing games that are an absolute blast with VR but we'll see once CV1 is out

Just a lesson to be learned here, don't support always online games that are essentially just glorified SP games with MP tacked on.

Or, at least true for Star Citizen, fly only single seaters and stay away from the FPS-enabled locations.
Not sure how ED is going to do this? Is every ship boardable? If not, you could also stick to the ones that allow you to fly without any chance of a FPS encounter.

As for HOTAS setups, if anyone is real serious about space/flight sims, then this (among other options) is the way to go. Not the only way but a very good way if you have the room and the cash (it's not even *that* expensive luckily):

http://obutto.com/index.php/gaming-cockpits/

This is exactly what I am eying.. but then to replace my entire desk and chair, and everything, basically that's gonna be my main workstation for sims, typing, mouse fps and everything else. It would make a lot of room in my pc altar room...

But for the full workstation replacement I'd be looking at 800 .. and that isn't exactly cheap ;p

And a huge gamble to take without ability to actually sit in that "car" chair before spending 800 (shipping and accesories).. I am very picky about my seating comforts

But yeah, Obutto Revolution Workstation is what I am planning to get after I tested VR

I own a r3volution cockpit and let me tell you that if you are picky about seating comfort, then you probably don't want to get this as a desk replacement. I now have a second desk PC but for about a year I used the Obutto exclusively. It's great for gaming in general and sims in specific, of course, but as a desk replacement it's really not that great. It's OK. You get around but it's far from ideal.

For example, getting in and out of the chair once you have everything installed (HOTAS mounts etc.) can be a little tricky. The seat is also very low above the floor and it does not swivel so you can't really get up quickly to do anything as sometimes you need to when doing actual work.
The keyboard and mouse tray takes some time getting used to since your mouse hand rests on the metallic edge of the tray (might depend a little on keyboard size and personal mouse sensitivity preferences etc.) and the hand rest space in front of the keyboard is very narrow (Logi G19 in my case).

So after extensive testing, I would personally only recommend this as a "toy" and not as a desk replacement but YMMV.
For a sim pit, I can't think of a more ideal solution at this price level though. The flight sim bundle is awesome, especially if, like me, you own a Warthog. There are endless options to arrange the controls exactly as you like.

That's very interesting to hear.. can you put gel wrist-rests (mats) beneath keyboard and mouse, or are the trays simply not large enough to do that? Mhhh, to be fair as an SIM only thing this isn't such a bad deal either, but for VR it'd have to at least accommodate fps games and the likes... I mean not ALL vr games are gonna be sims ;/

And no place to rest my wrist would be a major issue for WASD and mouse controls. Yikes ;/
