News Comments > Diablo III Turning One
12. Re: Diablo III Turning One May 14, 2013, 10:37 flechett3

Getting good items won't happen until the items (especially rare/unique/set) are balanced to enhance and expand the skills the plays use, instead of ALL being straight stat upgrades. Right now all the end-game item hunt is is looking for items that increase Primary Stat, Vit, Resist All, with certain damage or defense modifiers thrown in depending on item type. You don't go grab a weapon because it has a low-level bleed effect, or because it has a 1.2 chance to freeze a target.
Dammit, remember how awesome it was to find +skill items? Not having damage be skill-based was a terrible design oversight. They could have had set items change the basic function of skills, to provide new and varied game styles. They could have in turn provided a shit more ton of sets, instead of a whole bunch of crappy leveling sets (which... you won't ever find unless you go buy it off the AH), with each set bringing new play options to the table.
Charms, runes, more gems, all could have have enhanced the gameplay. An option to show only certain 'levels' of loot (if angband will let me filter drops, why the hell not d3?). Is anyone really going to argue that grey and white items add some sort of benefit to this game in it's current state? Why must I look at them at all, when all they do is get in the way when I'm trying to loot that yellow item (or tome, or gem, which could be auto-picked up!).
Blah, whatever. This game still bothers me.
Edit: That being said, the change to monster density is definitely a change for the better. Now if they'd only add another 50-75% more monsters again, it'd feel even better.

You guys just don't understand. The action part isn't the part where you use skills to kill monsters, and are rewarded with better items to improve said skills, it's now the RMAH! That's where all the excitement and adventure is! See if you can be the first of your friends to sell enough items on the RMAH to make the money you spent on the game back!

Very first fucking item on the agenda:

Players can now identify all items in their inventory by speaking to Deckard Cain or by using the Book of Cain that can be found near the shared stash in all Acts.

Next biggest thing I saw: Tooltips in the Auction House will now show an item comparison for a player's currently selected character.

Things that should have been in the game since day 1!

I skipped this. I just pretty much skip EA titles automatically now.

I always wanted follow-ups to SimLife. I even emailed Maxis (the real one - before EA bought them) about a sequel but the guy who emailed me back said that it didn't sell enough copies of the original to do a sequel.

I fricking loved SimLife back in the day on my LCii. That game taught me so much, and in such a simple way.

Steven Brust! To Reign in Hell is an amazing book, and if you love fantasy in general, read the Vlad Taltos novels. Just be warned, Brust does not really follow one style of writing. To Reign in Hell is not written the same way as Jhereg or Issola or Dragon is (nor are those three written the same as each other).

Seems like there's plenty of ARPGs coming out now though. Torchlight 2, Path of Exile, Bordlands 2, Krater, Grim Dawn, and I think I'm leaving a couple out still...

I'm hoping TL2 is a big leap from 1. I got into the PoE closed beta, it gets really blah. Sorry, but infinite dungeon killed it for me. I'll probably play through Borderlands 2 one time, just like I did 1. I liked it, but the linear gameplay, the fact that there were invisible walls everywhere, and places you can see but have to backtrack to after you've opened more of the plot up killed it for me (which seems like it goes against the linear complaint, but really it doesn't). I've only seen a bit about the last 2, I recently got married and moved, and I'm stealing shoddy wifi while waiting on EPB to come hook me up with some Fiber.

Yeah because Hellgate London worked out so well. Oh wait.

I ordered a copy online to be delivered on release. Somehow, I would up with 2 copies. I still have an unboxed still-in-shrink-wrap copy of Hellgate. I really wanted to like the game, because I loved the concept and I knew Roper had his mitts in it. Still kinda bummed that more people aren't investing in the action-rpg genre. It seems like it's all story driven (Mass Effect series/Dragon Age series) or the combat isn't real-time. So few games now give you the thrill of new amazing loot swarming over you while you cut a swath of death through the overwhelming numbers of bad guys...

Perhaps instead of being a douche, you could actually read what I've written. I never once said anything about how the drops in Diablo 3 are going to be handled, nor did I say that how they were handled in Diablo 2 would have any impact on them. In fact, the entire point of my original post was to demonstrate that the individual claiming you couldn't get duplicate uniques was wrong - except for a special case. Which the rings were.

A special case that existed for 1 year out of the 12 year history of the game. I don't really think that's 'working as intended.' You didn't say it, but you pretty well implied that's how unique items work currently, which isn't the case.

Meh, whatever. I know I'm going to play the hell out of D3, and I'm going to make damn sure I have 10 auctions listed every time I log off.

I wouldn't actually be surprised if the drop rates are tweaked to the point that even quality rares, never mind legendary items barely drop at all to encourage use of their embezzlement scheme of an auction house to begin with.

Which is exactly what I hope they do. Some dip out there is going to be willing to pay crazy money for the first Inferno difficulty Unique/Set/Crafted items to show up on the RMAH.

No, it's not wrong. You, apparently, just don't know your history.

http://diablo2.diablowiki.net/Unique_Rings

In D2C, prior to v1.07, the game always dropped the three unique rings in a preset order:

Nagelring > Manald Heal > Stone of Jordan

This meant that if the game generated a Unique ring, from a monster drop or gambling, it would always be a Nagelring, if there was not already a Nagelring in that game (previously dropped or possessed by one of the character). If there was a Nagelring, then a Manald Heal would drop. If both, then a Stone of Jordan would drop. If all three, then the ring would spawn rare instead of unique.

So yes, they changed that in later patches, but for a time, it was not possible to have any of those rings drop if you already had one.

D2 was released in late June of 2000. LoD was released exactly a year later, and the expansion brought the game to version 1.07. The game is now up to 1.13b. While you are correct, that for one year the game had wonky drops for rings, it was NOT the case for a anyone after the expansion came out. What you said implied that in some cases unique items wouldn't drop if you had them in your inventory, which isn't true, and wasn't working as intended. I guess I could say that in D3 we should expect some Elite items to NEVER drop, because until patch 1.04 Lances and a handful of other elite items couldn't drop.

I'll refer you to my previous post, where I linked to a Bashiok post where he stated that D2 uniques only dropped once per-game, and that they're called Legendaries now

There were a few special uniques that would only drop once per playthrough, and wouldn't drop if you already possessed them, but they were extremely rare. The vast majority of uniques could drop multiple times, and could still drop if you had one.

This is wrong, wrong, wrong. There are no checks against items already in your inventory. If you have the best uniques already equipped on your character, and you do mf runs, you have a chance of getting the same unique item to drop again. D2 does not check your inventory first. This is the whole reason the name Unique is being changed to Legendary. They are NOT unique, and never really were.

From the Arreat Summit website:
Can I get a Unique again if I already have it?
Yes, but the same Unique will not drop more than once in each game from Monsters or Chests.

I used to make a fortune on Ebay selling items I found using pindlebot (with an amazon scripts I re-wrote specifically for the one character I had that could kill him the quickest), and this thread has been infuriating to read with all the bad info floating around.

I'll be fine once the 15th hits. If, you know, the servers are up.

Oh good grief...
1) We have video games on our PC's!

2) We have shareware!

3) Game companies drop shareware for time/content restricted demos!

4) Game companies let quality drop off the face of the planet, and games wind up being much shorter than the old games we played back in #1.

5) Game companies realize they can keep the shortened games and add DLC (i.e. content they were just too lazy to put into the shipped game, or really blah, very short additions to games that already kinda suck, for the most part) to make more money!

6) Now they think that bringing back shareware is a good idea? So they're going to continue on with #5, but they're going to basically try to sell us a portion of the complete game? If a game from #4 is say, 1/3 the size of what a game from #1 is, then can you imagine how short a shareware version of a #4 game will be? We're talking maybe 1/3 of a 1/3 #1 video game. And they wanna charge us for this? They
need to improve the length of the games they are releasing, or drastically improve the quality of what they put out. We're inundated with buggy, shoddy, short games, and we're kinda sick of it.

Sign up on the official d3 facebook page for the beta, thats how I got in. Note that its NOT necessary to have a facebook account to do so, they have alternative entry instructions there. I signed up and a couple weeks later I was in (this was back in november). I think they've been increasing the beta signup waves significantly.
ALSO, make sure in your battle.net profile you've opted into beta's such as D3, and make sure to run the hardware thingy.

Yup, done all of that, still no beta invite for my account, or any of my co-workers who have done the same. I know of no one (personally) who is a part of the beta, and it's driving me crazy.

To the people who got in the beta and played through it once or twice, I hate you. I tried my damndest to get into that beta, and would have played that game until it cried.

Also, I can't wait to make a 95% profit on items I find that I don't physically have to store, hold, or mail while playing a game I'm going to love. I will gladly take 4.50 for a Shako. Someone out there will be foolish enough to buy it.

did you NEVER see the spam characters in Org or SW? And that's just the hacks that the spammers use. There's a lot of them out there...
