Points also make it a little easier to do promotions. Putting a 1600 point card on sale seems to make more sense than putting a $20 gift card on sale. It also makes it a little simpler to make it non-refundable. If you have $10 in your online wallet, you might want to be able to take that money out. If you instead have 800 points, you're less likely to think you should be able to cash that out. That leads into more promotions, where you can give away points more like you'd give away a coupon or gift card instead of cash.

Why rely on third-party opinions when your own opinion is far more useful?

Because it's illegal. And boosting the dl/seeding stats helping doom your favorite hobby?

While I openly admit it's different, as it isn't a physical good (which is why I go nuts when people compare used cars to used games), you're still taking $50 of value and paying only $20. Again, with the time value of money it's even worse.

Why is the value of playing the game $50 when it comes out and $20 several months later? Why is the buyer ripping off the developer in a few months instead of the developer ripping off the buyer now? This is the heart of the whole issue.

I remember Crysis and Far Cry 2 originally claiming to let you "lose" missions while still allowing you to progress through the game, with your failures having long-term conseqeuences. Of course, none of this ended up in the final games. While it's a great idea, it makes game design much more complicated, as you have to account for far more variables. Pretty much every game would turn into an RPG.

They could even do something as simple as, say, Wing Commander, where you get a set of missions, you get (internally tracked) points for completing objectives, and if you get enough points you move along the "good" path and if you don't you go to a "losing" path.

Idiots. If you had released a public dedicated server for PC you would have no problem.

That's DICE supporting the PC for you.

How would that solve the problem?

BTW, the PC has contributed to about 18% of total net revenue GAAP and 24% non-GAAP net revenue for the total income of EA.

Actually that's 13% non-GAAP, 11% GAAP. PC down about 13% year on year. About half of PS3 & 360 individually.

It's not as bad considering they released about 2/3rds as many PC games as 360/PS3 games.

The xpac test this weekend was, in my experience, a sad gank fest. I tried to struggle out from the constant attacks to see what had actually been added to the game, but wasn't able to. From literally the second I logged in I was forced to contend with roving gangs of gankers against whom a single player had no chance.

I uninstalled. I'm sure some people like that sort of grief based PvP. I'm just not one of them.

Ultimately, I decided I don't like that style of open PVP in a game with a traditional MMO grind.

I've found my taste in games has been refined and my tolerance for bullshit has decreased over time. These days you have a lot of games to choose from so why keep playing a mediocre game you don't enjoy.
I concur. I am more and more choosy, whining about most new (bad) games becomes a second nature and its getting more and more difficult for the publishers to satisfy my gaming tastes. Im going Statler & Waldorf!

Playing Dragon Age 1 hour a week would suck, because more often than not that 1 hour wouldn't have any enjoyable moments in your 1 hour play session. You have to play Dragon Age for a significant amount of time to get any payoff.
I haven't played DA yet, but i don't require a non-stop, always fast paced gameplay to keep my interest high enough to stick with a game over several weeks or even months. But too often, when i got back to a game, especially a RPG, i find myself wondering, what the fuck was i suppossed to do in this game. Quest journals are some help, but what an old fart like me would prefer ... a feature, which tells the story so far with an ingame-engine movie. Displaying memorable fights, showing known adversaries, wrapping up everything i was doing since the last gaming session ... and then the story aka the game continues.

One other thing that gets me, especially with JRPGs, is that I end up forgetting all the game's gimmicks. All these games have a different special combo system, special attacks, or even whole battle system that you need to be familiar with to get past most tough encounters.

I don't see anything wrong with a cinematic look and feel.

its a game, NOT a movie. I hate lens flare, motion blur and other camera effects in games it ruins immersion.

There are probably a lot more people who would complain that it looks "fake" or wrong without those things.

He was probably referring to the console folk but since you mentioned it....every Rockstar game eventually comes to the PC and RDR will be no different. They spent what, 50mil making it? It costs them very little to port it to the PC afterward and throw it up on Steam. After the consoles have sold for awhile they will offer a PC version just like every other Rockstar game beforehand.

Just like every other Rockstar game except Red Dead Revolver.

The idea that exclusivity online loses any sales is absolutely absurd. If it's in the brick and mortar retail world it makes sense, but does someones hand get too tired to type in a different URL? The idea that Direct2Drive has loyal customers is a joke

I think it'd actually be worse with online stores. It's another account you have to set up, another client or downloader you might need to install or have running, and possibly a different source for patches. With a brick and mortar store the only difference is what else they try to sell you when you buy the game.

Reminds me of something I read about Everquest 2 the other day. I guess they are adding an option where once a month you can pay $5 (I think) and get 3 days of playtime, so you can play for an event weekend (then get hooked enough pay for another month) or something.

Don't worry you'll get your bonus in just a few more weeks, I promise.

Really? Vital? And how come this DRM isn't vital to companies like StarDock and yet they are selling games well with no DRM???

Because Stardock games cost 20-50 times less to make and subsequently the sales required (and obtained) are significantly less? Half a million sales of a game is a success for Stardock. Half a million sales for the high budget games would result in the studio being shutdown and the employees being fired.

Can you explain how DRM factors into this? Are you saying that Stardock games aren't big enough to lose sales due to piracy? Because basically what you said is: a) Stardock games have smaller budgets than big studio AAA titles b) the sales Stardock games require to make money are lower than BSA3T and c) if a BSA3T had the sales a stardock game had they'd have to shut down. Nowhere in that is anything about DRM or piracy addressed.

I don't get this attitude. I can understand the whole nostalgia thing but acting like people can never improve upon an IP or idea just because you liked it when you were young is pretty arrogant. I'll stomach the sequels and remakes if it means we get the occasional gem.

People CAN improve on the original IP - I would like more than to see someone take X-Com and rebuilt it...heck, even up to the level of the Silent Storm engine. Instead they will gut it, and try to make it into something else.

Taking X-COM and making it into an FPS with an FBI agent as the main character...and then having the gonads to make the statement that it is "true to the roots of the franchise"? And you think I'M arrogant?

And you don't get why fans of X-COM would be less than pleased? How many FPS are there? How many GOOD turn-based tactical squad games are there? How many of them have been released in the last year?

Maybe it will be the best FPS since the original Half-Life. Yay. I'd still rather see someone remake X-COM, rather than make something else and stick the X-COM name on it.

"True to the roots of the franchise" all depends how high on the list of "Reasons X-Com was a good game" you'd the fact that it was a turn based strategy game. This announcement has spawned a ton of comments from people who are upset that there aren't very many good TBS games.

I played a version a few years ago, it was quite addictive and fun. however some of the strange mutations my character acquired prevented me from being able to make much progress.

Im definitely going to try this, along with zdaemon its probably the only game my system will allow me to run ATM

Keep in mind that a new major release of DF can be very buggy, though it doesn't seem like it has too many crash bugs at the moment. Also, I think it's using a lot of RAM on a default sized world.
