Used the 25% off code from Green Man Gaming to pick this up. Since it's a Steam key anyway, it saved me $2 (and it's only $10 to begin with). I played through the intro and first few missions and I must say I am impressed. Probably one of the best indie games I have played to date, and definately in the vein of DK 2. Witty comments, monsters to kill, an easy to understand interface (with configurable controls for us lefties), and no consolitis? Good stuff.

I didn't realize it was $10. Guess I should check it out.

I disagree. In fact the main problem with D3 is that they tried to implement some new ideas (for the genre) instead of just going for the tried and true formula they tossed the dice, which were loaded for 'greed'...

They also abandoned the gritty and dark atmosphere, for better or for worse...well for worse.

Blizzard failed because instead of making Diablo 2.5 (something they are rather good at with their other IPs) they made a game that was fun for a while and tedious for the rest for all the rest of the time you played...

I disagree with your disagreement Diablo 3 failed because they tried to shoe horn in shitty MMO elements into the ARPG genre, spammed their overwrought story and cut down on things that mattered like randomization. Diablo 2 did a lot of new and interesting things that Diablo 1 didn't, people were expecting a similar transition with the third game. The biggest thing they did with Diablo 3 was the auction house which is amusing and offputting at the same time.

I think the biggest problem D3 had is that there are too many bad items/not enough great items that drop. Also it turns out that trading items in an ARPG only works if it is sufficiently difficult to trade, such as trading between a group of friends playing, then maybe trying to trade big ticket items in public channels.

A good early combo for tougher missions, if you have a sniper with the recon ball perk, you can throw it pretty far. Against a lot of enemies, you might discover several groups of aliens near each other, and if they don't see you they are probably not spread out. Get a heavy to send a rocket that way and you get a bunch of kills. You obviously don't want to do this all the time since you get less loot, but it could even things out when there are 10 aliens to your 4 or 5 soldiers.

Alright dammit - you guys have broken me. Where is the cheapest place to buy? (I'm weak AND lazy. )

Hearing all the hype about how great the original was and how awesome this one is going to be, I was tempted to get it until I played the demo. Didn't you control larger squads in the original XCOM? In the demo you only have 4 people, and every game play video I've seen it's 4 people or 4 people + 1 robot. Is that it or do you get larger squads later in the game? I know there is more to the game than the combat, but there wasn't any of that in the demo and they haven't shown any of that in the videos (at least the ones I've seen, and I haven't read these reviews yet).

Apparently the max is 6 soldiers on a misson. That and the lack of randomized maps are my biggest concerns. Firaxis says they believe that the majority of gamers never used more than six main soldiers in the original (from the beginning you could pack 14 troops in the Skyranger or 10 with a tank) and used the rest as fodder. That may be true but I agonized over each and every soldier. Even when the Avenger allowed me to field 22.

To be fair it is a bit of a pain to move 18 soldiers and 2 tanks out of an Avenger. Not to mention moving them during a turn.

I'd blame it on how little information there has been about the game, compared to other games coming out on the same day (XCOM), and a crowded market with BL2, TL2, and the WoW expansion.

Anything's possible, but I wouldn't say there's been "little information." Their marketing campaign has been pretty all-encompassing, and they've had quite a lot of previews on most of the major sites.

I guess there really aren't that many fans of the Thief-type gameplay...

Creston

Well, RPS had a three part interview and multiple discussions and articles about XCOM. They reposted a couple developer diaries and trailers for Dishonored.

I was going to go for europe, more countries covered at once and the research bonus. Gonna go Classic / Ironman my first playthrough...things gonna get dicey!

I was thinking the same thing, except I'll be starting on Normal Ironman. I want to play at least 1 game to get a feel for the mechanics before I dive into Classic.

I'm going with Classic (dunno about Ironman) because the gameplay is a little different between normal and classic and I don't want to get used to the normal stuff. The three main changes I know of are:

1) Some aliens have more health, which changes things up because of what is required to kill them. For example, Thin Men have 4 health instead of 3, meaning a basic grenade can't kill them on classic.

2) Your base starts with less stuff on classic.

3) There's a limit on the number of aliens that will engage you on normal, potentially resulting in enemies retreating from combat if there are too many other aliens around.

Also, as far as Dishonored goes, I know nothing about that game. There have been all kinds of previews and gameplay videos and interviews about XCOM, but almost nothing about Dishonored.

Okay, after reading that interview on XCOM I've gone from nervous about the remake to flat-out terrified. It really sounds like they changed WAY too much. Looks like I'm back to waiting for the kickstarter X-COM remake project.

When you "remake" a game, you either have to change nothing at all, or change a lot. And changing nothing is pretty boring and a bit pointless when the original remains.

The two biggest things I wish they'd take from GW2 is getting rid of mob tagging and instanced nodes. I really hope they make that change for Titan. I also enjoyed using Dodge in GW2, which you can kind of use on the Monk character.

WoW has the mob tagging tech, but currently it is only used for quest "boss" mobs (to prevent large crowds of people waiting for the same NPC to respawn so they can kill it). I think you'd need something like GW2s downleveling system for that to really work though, otherwise high level players could either grief lower level characters by denying them mob XP or too easily power level characters (depending on how XP worked). Though, they do pretty much have the tech to do some sort of downleveling. I have no idea if they could currently do instanced nodes. However, those two are things you really have to integrate into the game design, so you don't flood the market with ore/herbs or don't put any high level quests in an otherwise low level zone.

Yup, could not get back into the WoW combat. I tried. I really want to see the content. I just can't. I do like Pet battles though. Probably because I had over 100 before this expansion, and now they actually do something.

I think I interrupt and avoid attacks more in WoW than I did in GW2, though my GW2 character was a warrior with Healing Signet,

The tag-less mobs in GW2 gives anyone that contributes to the kill loot and XP. The tag-less resource nodes are huge improvement also as every who can see the node can mine/harvest/pick it. You really don't see the same types of griefing you would in other MMOs. No fighting over mobs and so on. This is definitely one thing that Blizzard needs to learn for World of Warcraft.

I don't think it would ruin the economy of the game at all. In GW2 you still have a chance for rare items on the resource nodes. The common resources just won't be worth that much but the rare ones will be. The real money might be on the professions themselves instead of the common materials.

In GW2 there really aren't people who can walk in and one-shot any mob you're fighting, like a high level character in WoW could do in a low level zone.

As for the economy, it works in GW2 but it works because GW2 is designed with that in mind. Everyone has gathering skills, and resource node numbers and respawn rates and crafting requirements should be somewhat balanced around the mechanic.

My major concern is that in the lastest Ars preview they state the game is maybe about 16 hours long and really doesn't seem to have any replay value. So no random maps, editor, etc. is making me go 'Hrmm' now. I think I may hold off for a little bit after launch for some more feedback.

The Ars preview also complains that there's no "undo" button. So I don't really trust it.

What is the point in counting sales but ignoring digital? Did they just do this so they could name drop Blizzard/WoW and get some page views? Other than people getting collector's edition copies why would anyone not get the digital download? I would imagine the vast majority of MoP sales were digital.

I think the main issue is that they don't have any digital numbers, but news about sales number of big games are a thing.

Any way to live capture those aliens at the end after they tell you "hey it would be cool if you could get some live ones" ?
If my guys have stun, I can't figure how to use it.

I also was not able to do it. I'm guessing you dont have the stun baton researched, but guessing its a 'nudge' to research it in the future from what i've seen from the gameplay videos. I even had one of my troops point blank in the aliens face, couldnt do anything but unload a shotgun blast, which was pretty satisfying as well. I'm guessing the demo isnt as tailor made, but more the full game cut down to a demo.

Yeah from watching gameplay demos, those look like little hints/tips that come up when you encounter something new. There's an "Arc Thrower" weapon or special ability that you use to stun aliens which I don't think you have in the demo.

I think the dungeons need a tuning pass, some are overtuned and others are too easy. The storyline quests are fine and not meant to be played back to back but people treat it as the "main quest line" which is fair, so they always want to see whats next.

They definitely talked about how much they tuned and fixed things after BWE feedback. And dungeons (along with the higher level zones) were barely covered in any of the BWEs.
