I can't count how many games I've stopped playing due to reloading too far back and not wanting to redo a particularly tense sequence, one I was proud to make it through, all over again at that point. I dunno if I've ever completely quit a game for this reason, but I know there are some games I've come close (Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfare I'm looking at you).
I don't know what developers just don't let people save anyware. This "checkpoint" system is an archaic holdover of earlier consoles. Being able to save and reload/quit whenever the heck I want is a feature that should be standard in all games. Checkpoints suck. |

I wish they'd have a sale on CoD4, I want to try that game Agreed. I'd buy COD4 for $25, but COD: WaW... not quite so much. Too many previous WW2 shooters are out there. |

As far as I can remember PC video games are the only form of entertainment that haven't inflated. I remember playing $49.99 for a PC game back in 2001. I paid $49.99 for Fallout 3 last year. True. I remember paying $90 (CAD) for Street Fighter II back in 1992. Today that translates into about $130. Yet, console games are roughly half that.
Gaming as a whole (when adjusted for inflation) has actually become a lot cheaper. Both hardware and software (on PC and console) are pretty much as cheap as they've ever been. |

The only ones I'm interested in are braid and world of goo, and to me, they're not worth 20 bucks together. Having played Braid, I'd say it's worth $20 all by itself. |

Interesting findings. I never would have figured console gaming mags would feature ads for sex chat lines and other adult things.
Although I think it's ironic that a parent would flip out over their children seeing sex ads, but probably didn't bat an eye over ads for violent video games. Collectively, society's moral compass is pretty effed up.

Honestly, Lamestop needs to die off, publishers need to price their games realistically, and gamers need to be willing to pay for a quality product. But what regardless of the "new" price of anything, there will invariably be a cheaper used price that more people will be willing to pay for. It doesn't matter whether new games cost $20, $40 or $60.
What game companies need to do is make games that people don't feel the need to trade-in. |

A pirated copy is potentially never a sale whereas a used game copy demonstrates intent that the buyer wanted to spend money. While publishers probably like neither activity, I can tell you with 100% certainty that console piracy is barely a blip on the radar while used games sales is a big fucking deal to them. Neither should be a big deal if they are pricing their games properly. Ideally, any price they set should be designed to (in theory) maximize their profits irrespective of either used sales or pirated copies. If they are worried about losing sales, then their prices are too high. |

these bastards should be hit where it really hurts. Take action. pirate the game to death. Distribute copies of the game throughout london and alikes. Or... wait a few weeks and buy a used copy? |

BatAttack summed it up nicely. I really hope this concept takes off. The current publisher/developer model is really quite lousy, which is why we have so many generic and derivative games dumbed down for the lowest common denominator. Agreed, this could be a workable concept although it would need a lot of issues ironed out both legally and practically.
But if the general gaming communities investment knowledge is anything like some of the comments in this thread, then this idea could be doomed to fail. I get the feeling that private investment is something your average gamer (or Joe) has little to no experience with.
The whole point of giving money to indie devs is to help them make the kind of games you want to play but nobody else is making. If you only care about making a profit, you're better off sticking with the stock market. One big issue that could come up from this is when people start "owning" part of the project by way of investment the issue of control rears its ugly head. Not a problem if the developers own a significant chunk of the pie, but if things get diluted it can become problematic. Having worked for a startup company which relied on private investment, I got to witness this sort of thing first hand. When politics gets into things it can derail a project pretty quickly.

Ever hear of the lady who spilled coffee on her lap from Macdonalds, she got 2.5 million. She bought coffee , she put it between her legs while driving, got into an accident, spilled and burnt her, She got millions.
NEVER underestimate the stupidy of civil court. *cringe* Actually, in the coffee case it made sense why she won. That case has taken on almost urban-legend status since apparently most people haven't read the actual facts of the case and why she was awarded judgement. Suffice to say there was a lot more to it than simply spilling coffee on herself.
Oh and she actually received less than a million, not the millions widely reported.

I think there's something poetic in destroying his own creation. And he stated he wants to film it and replay it backwards to show it "rising from the ashes" which could be an art piece in and of iteself.
Btw, is anyone else finding these "Evony" ads more and more ridiculous. Not that they were subtle before, but now they have these ads just zoomed right in on a woman's bra. I half expect it to take me to a porn site. |

| Any chance this game will be moddable? Because trying the demo it has a lot of potential and I'm sure the user community could fix a lot of the annoying stuff. |

As much as I'm excited about both, this is specifically why I worry about the new Deus Ex and Thief sequels. I'm actually hoping for some good combat in the new Deus Ex game. The combat in the prior games sucked balls. |

Action games have always been the most popular genre, yes. But there was still a very distinct separation between it and other genres. Look at RPGs. Jade Empire, Fable, Mass Effect, Fallout 3... all of those are essentially action games with RPG elements. Blending of action and RPG elements has been going on for decades. Look at the the Mana games, the Zelda games, River City Ransom, the System Shocks, the Diablos, Arena, Daggerfall, etc. This isn't new.
Ditto with blending of action and other genres (adventure, strategy, sims, etc).
I'll grant that in recent times action-oriented gaming has become more the fore-front of gaming (that and "casual" gaming), but gaming always goes through cycles. For example, the RPGs you list (the BioWare AD&D games, the Fallouts) came after RPGs were pronounced dying on the PC platform. This was followed by several waves of resurgance through the late 90's and 2000's.
I agree that it would be nice if there were some broader genres of games (particularly space sims; oh how I miss the days of X-Wing and Tie Fighter!). But there are still games in neglected genres being released (again, look at Telltale licensing and releasing new games based on Lucasarts frachises), so keep enjoying what we have now until such genres stage their comebacks. |
