I must admit I like the sound of what I have heard about JC2 (not to be confused with the second coming of Jesus), the only negative in my book is the fact I have XP and that it requires a newer OS. Perhaps this will be my first incentive to upgrade. It's still going to be a while though before I can afford to renew my system.

Wait...what? This isn't an XP-compatible game?

Aw, man!

See, this is the kind of thing that's going to cost me...cause I'll start with "Cool, finally a reason to upgrade to Win7" and end up with "But, honey, I need to spend $7000 on upgrading SkyNet!"

Slippery slope, my friends...a slippery slope.

Bah, not buying to get into beta.

As a rule, I don't believe in pre-ordering...and, in recent years, I've decided that I don't have time to do the beta thing (if I'm going to test code, I'm getting paid, by Dog!).

But Mount & Blade is a bit different - it started as a one-man dev team that actually sold pre-orders of the original game at a discounted price to help fund development. Now, if EA or Ubi or Activision tried that, I'd tell them to go jump in a lake...but this is one guy trying to scratch together enough to buy enough ramen noodles to keep from starving long enough to get his game done.

I think the team is up to three or four people now, but I've been really impressed with Taleworlds as an Indy developer. I pre-ordered on Steam as soon as I noticed it was available, beta or no.

(I still don't have time to screw around with testing, but we need to support good Indy devs if we want PC gaming to evolve away from microtransactions for incremental content and half-assed ports.)

Just Cause 2 just sounds fun. I got the first one during the Steam sale to check it out on the cheap.

I haven't seen a good campy game since NOLF. Kids these days think "camp" is a bad word involving snipers. GET OFF MY LAWN!

Anyway.

The gameSlave review of STO is the most balanced I've seen so far. Obviously this guy actually played the game beyond the tutorial. His criticisms are fair, as are his observations about what they did right (a smooth MMO launch deserves some kudos, as does the effort they're putting into improving the game).

Gotta disagree.

Mount & Blade is an incredible indy game - for what it is.

I mean, if you expected an RPG, you'd be sorely disappointed...but for a medieval combat sim, it's fantastic.

You have the IP rights to a classic 80s arcade game, so you decide the best way to capitalize on this is...

...to make a movie.

*shakes head*

I don't get it. Why not - I don't know - MAKE A GAME?!

It just might be crazy enough to work.

Think about it - GTAIV meets GRiD/DiRT/Blur...with miniguns.

But, no...they'll make a crappy movie starring Freddie Prinz Jr and Carrot-Top.

*wanders off muttering profanities*

Metro 2033's A.I. is terribly stupid and there's not enough variety in the weapons; yet despite all that it's still a compelling game to play.

All of the reviews of this game read like this.

How does that help me decide whether the game is worth my time/money?

I can condense every review I've read, so far, into a single sentence:

"This game is awful...but great!"

WTF, over?

Yeeeah.

The amount of money they've made with this game dwarfs the GNP of most of the globe, and can only be expressed using complex equations (involving sixth-dimensional numbers).

If that ain't "getting it right", you might want to rethink your perspective.

I don't get it.

I don't dislike the game...I just couldn't get into it.

Many people have told me that it gets great like 10 hours in...but why would I play that long if I'm not having fun?

I'll probably reinstall (a fourth time) to give it another try - but I don't know when. Too many games I enjoy already on the HD right now.

Yeah, the default (unless this changes it) is to search with no filters set, which it kicks off automatically when you bring up the server list.

So the first thing probably 90% (I'd like to think) of people do is hit CANCEL. Great interface design.

Of course, maybe I'm the minority in that I always use the filters. I mean, why would I EVER want to see empty or full servers? I suppose there's scenarios where it makes sense...for instance, if I wanted to reconfigure the screwed up helo controls without killing anyone else...but the vast majority of the time, I only want to see servers I can join, preferably with a ping under 70 (which there should be a filter for, by the way).

I've heard too many good things about Arkham Asylum to pass it up. Just Cause was a bonus, though I only picked it up because the bundle is cheaper than Arkham Asylum alone.

Arkham Asylum was really well done. Very much conveyed that "I'm Batman!" feel, and even the Arena modes were sort of entertaining in a "I'm beating the pulp out of fifty dudes" kind of way.

Here's hoping there's more content for it, down the road, or at least a sequel.

(Oh, and the battle damage to your armor as you progress through the game is a really nice touch...)

Is Just Cause worth it? I'm hearing a lot of excitement for the sequel, but the first one never really popped up on my radar...

All I know is that DiRT2 is a ton of fun...nothing like screaming down a narrow muddy canyon road at 150mph and giving the guy in front of you just a leeeeetle nudge to encourage them out of your way (preferably into the way of a 15-ton boulder).

Happy to hear there will be another sequel.

Man...I'm gonna have to go home and get my Subaru muddy, now.

Wallshadows,

It depends on what you're looking for. I'm enjoying STO, but as a hop-in-for-an-hour-or-two-here-and-there kind of thing. If you want to rush through to the endgame...yeah, you're probably going to burn through everything and then wonder why there's nothing left to do.

I've been playing since the head-start, and I'm still playing it over higher-rated games, but I'm certain that's because I'm taking my time and not playing to grind or anything.

I think the game has a lot of things to hammer out, still - obviously pushed out the door too early - but give it a look, sometime. There's a 10-day free trial, but I dunno if you need a buddy to send it to you or if anyone can do it...

[EDIT - Mind you, the C-Store crap in that update does steam me. I've already paid for a subscription - this microtransaction BS has got to stop! I know it's just for "extra cool stuff!" but damn, I paid for the game, I paid for a subscription, WTF?]

PS - I don't like the term "troll" in this sense...I mean, Trolls really get the short end of the PR stick as it is...and most of them don't get internet (unless they tap into the cables under the bridge).

I know it's shocking that something coming from EA could be anything but lose/lose, but in fact - this time they're doing the RIGHT THING.

Take a deep breath. The vertigo should pass shortly. It's just your brain acclimating to Bizzaro World.

News Comments > Valve's Mac Plans Announced
18. Re: Valve's Mac Plans Announced Mar 8, 2010, 15:25 JoeNapalm

Mac users always want to say "Fuck MS" when they fail to realize that MS has pushed computing and gaming forward farther than anything Mac's have done. The only thing Apple did was ignite the fire with the wonderful Apple IIe series of systems. After that they have utterly failed miserably.

I generally try to rise above the pointless banality of OS Wars...but Apple has failed to do anything for computers and gaming?

Yeah, cause GUIs and the mouse haven't done a THING for PC gaming.

*rolls eyes*

Who cares if you like OS X or not? If you don't like it, don't use it. Doesn't hurt you if other people do, and it doesn't slow down Halflife 3 in any way shape or form...or do you seriously think that the team that pushes code for Steam are the same guys writing Valve's games?
