I know it's unreasonable but I also felt like The Matrix was dragged down by it's sequels. Yeah I know, I should consider it on it's own merits but the sequels were so godawful they actually tarnish the whole franchise in my mind.

I think that's perfectly reasonable.

People tend to avoid things that remind them of past trauma, even if those were things they used to enjoy.

[While Snopes claims that rumors that they lost the lawsuit about the authorship of the screenplay are false, I can't help but think that the sequels show a deep lack of understanding of the first film - sort of odd, if they actually wrote it. But I digress...used to date an English PhD student who did a thesis or something on this stuff.]

Inception a 2010 remake of The Matrix!

And I suppose Full Metal Jacket was just a remake of Apocalypse Now?

I mean, everyone's entitled to their opinion...not interested in getting into a "my movie can beat up your movie" conversation...but comparing Inception to The Matrix is pretty thin.

Besides, there's only like three good stories that just get retold over and over, when you get down to it. So Avatar is Pocahontas...I'd rather watch Avatar. *Shrug*

It is possible that an RPG can move forwards and not be held back by RPGs of the past two decades, that in removing complexity in one area that you autistic people obsess and perseverate on ("What? No Unarmored skill? NO MEDIUM ARMOR SKILL? THE GAME IS COMPLETELY RUINED!"), they can spend more time balancing and working on new, more natural complexity elsewhere.

Actually, I think that was pretty epic and on the ball.

Games are products developed to be sold to people who will give good, hard cash to be entertained. They are not designed or developed by the Muses to bring forth High Art unto the savage barbarian races. Look at the top five selling franchises of all time. You think any of those games have a narrative that's better than your average Twilight book? Please.

Old shit is old for a reason and we don't use it now because it's clearly inferior to what we're using today. If that wasn't so, why aren't we still using bronze tools and chasing bears with long pointy sticks?

The Top 5 Best Selling Game Franchises of ALL TIME:
Mario
Pokemon
Tetris
The Sims
FIFA

Hey, you're right! Except that NONE of those are RPGs. The best selling RPG of all time, though, is Lineage. So, by your logic...Lineage is the BEST RPG EVER.

I think that is pretty definitive proof that your scale is completely out of whack.

You seem to think that these RPGs are being streamlined to make them sleeker and more fun - in reality, most of them are just being simplified to make them cheaper to develop and run on consoles with limited resources and controls, and homogenized to make them appeal to a "broader demographic" (aka the lowest common denominator).

Don't get me wrong...I own Fallout's 1 through 3, and if I'm going to play Fallout it's probably going to be New Vegas...even great games don't always age so gracefully that a pretty update doesn't appeal.

But to sit there and say Oblivion is better than Morrowind because of the "new natural complexities" is...well...it's actually pretty absurd. They didn't remove complexity to make it better...they simply removed it to make it run better on a machine with less memory and a clunkier control scheme.

Annnnd he nails why Oblivion had such weird limitations, such as tons of zone loading, painfully redundant environments, and "cookie cutter" NPCs.

Yeeeah...if your main complaint about Blood Bowl Legendary Edition is that it's too much like playing Blood Bowl and not enough like "Madden with Orcs", you very well may not be the target demographic.

It's a great adaptation of BB to the computer - particularly if you want to play multiplayer. It is not, nor is it intended to be "Madden with Orcs".

In an age where marketing wonks thrive on taking established IPs and then "broadening their appeal" until all that is left is a reeking pile of garbage, I for one feel that Mr.Reviewer from the Examiner should go soak his head.

Your mileage may vary.

Good luck with that.

1. Create new gaming platform that nobody wants, with obvious technical shortcomings (that will actually get WORSE if your plan actually defeats all odds and becomes popular)
2. Downplay those flaws with pie-in-the-sky claims that any 5 year-old can see through
3. ???????
4. PROFIT!

I don't see how this could possibly go wrong.

[Actually, I suspect this has already gone very right for the Execs behind it - as long as they've made enough venture capital to arrange for a comfy retirement, they don't care that it has no actual hope for survival. They don't have to convince US it's a good idea - just a bunch of fools willing to part with their money.]

Interesting...

I'm a full iteration behind on this one, though. I like the first one, but with the PC DRM fiasco, never grabbed the second one. May have to get it on the PS3...

12. Re: FINAL FANTASY XIV Free Trial Extended Nov 19, 2010, 10:38 JoeNapalm

I take serious issued with this being called a "Free Trial"...

A free trial is when I get the game, for free, for a trial period. Any time provided with a Pay-to-Play MMO subscription free with my purchase isn't free - its included in my purchase...and it's not a "trial" because the game has already been paid for.

You don't call the period of time between when you buy a car and the first oil change a "test drive".

In summary, I despise marketing wonks.

Bioware's answer?

C) Disregard entire game mode, and replace with Dumbest Minigame Ever Invented!

Creston

You hit the nail on the head with that, Creston.

Bioware looked at what was wrong with ME1 and, instead of FIXING it, they just carved it out of the game entirely.

Baby and bathwater, both out the bloody window.

The "oh, the inventory sucked anyway, so who misses it" perspective is understandable...if there weren't successful examples of how to do it right.

Look, I own a PS3. I don't hate consoles. I just hate what consoles make devs do to games that would otherwise have been awesome on the PC. ME1? Great game - but it would have been a lot better without the screwed up GUI and Halo-esque repetitive, limited environments...both of which are indisputably the result of console-oriented design constraints. For ME2, they identified the problem areas...then just craved them out like the Spanish Inquisition going after a rumor.

I enjoyed ME1 and ME2, but I can say that and still be very disappointed by the poor design choices, and concerned that ME3/DA will go even further in the wrong direction. Anyone who refuses to learn from history, etc.

So...according to this article, we should play bad games so we appreciate mediocre games more?

Yeaaaah, I'm going to have to say "@#%^ you" and play good games so that I appreciate good games more.

I mean, WTF? How much free time do you bloody have, man?

That said, I play a lot of games that don't have the greatest Metacritic scores, or whatever...simply because what entertains me tends not to be in the mainstream AAA hype-machine driven review feeding frenzy.

I don't know how to feel about this.

I love the series, but the first was a bad port, and the second was eviscerated to make it "more accessible."

This is a perfect example of why taking a good PC games to console platforms is bad.

And to add insult to injury, it sounds like they're doing the same thing to DA.
