News Comments > Steam Game Resale EU Court Case This Year?

I wonder if any of you have actually thought about the implications of peer-to-peer used games market on Steam...

To make it simple, you have two buttons that are effectively "Buy for Cheap from another user" and "Buy for Expensive from the developer/publisher."

Instead of selling 500,000 copies, a developer sells 50,000 that just get recycled over and over again for eternity. You don't see this with console games because there's an inconvenience factor and the most convenient way has an annoying middle man that takes most the money. (Gamestop, most commonly).

Whether it's within our rights or not, it's definitely not in our best interests, because it would decimate the Steam catalog as publishers bail out from a platform that discourages its users from even buying from the publisher.

This is alarmist theorycrafting that assumes people will actually trade all of their games instead of owning them and that publishers can't work around this with DLC as they are doing already. Most publisher released games in the past year have at least 1-2 content packs, if not more and they sell the base game versions for next to nothing after 3 months to spur those DLC sales. Digital resale will not cause the end of Steam or the video game industry, it just needs careful execution and methodology. Account binding and per copy account activation is the simplest way to do this and Steam already has the functionality. The bigger problem is how companies would chase money by splitting even more content off to DLC but that's already happening on a large scale so I can't say this would cause any harm.

Andrew Reisse is a good example of why Police should not be involving themselves in high speed chases.

Agreed. People get killed all the time in these things because some of these cops have to be the macho badasses. And unless the people in the car are an immediate lethal threat to society, let them go and scoop them up later. No one should die because some kid stole a car or some other dumb shit.

This isn't wrestling, they were enforcing the law after a previous shooting. They were an immediate lethal threat, if you read the story you will find all of the details. The police can't just let people go because they rev their car up.

It's a sad set of circumstances but it's one of those shitty, random things that happens in society.

EA, an unprofitable piece of unwiedly shit that can't seem to make a game without pissing off the entire universe is saying the 100 year old company that birthed the industry is walking dead. What's that bit about throwing stones in a glass house?

The fact that you all are interpreting such arguments as "sucking Blizzard's dick" and being a member of the "Blizzard defense force", says a lot more about you than it does about me. Honestly, Blizzard is engaging in pretty shitty business practices as of late, and I am no longer the fan I once was, but let's focus on the REAL shitty business practices (always-on DRM, pay-real-money-to-win Auction House), rather than imagining fake ones (shorting us on content to sell expansion packs by shipping a... long, full-length single-player game) in order to gratify and justify our own senses of outrage and disappointment at what Blizzard has become.

I was referring to Kaptain Krunch the rageaholic, no clue what you're talking about.

i suppose its better than deus ex machina with zero explanation, a la Lost.. the writers couldnt figure out a way to wrap it all up so they left it hanging "for the audience to decide!!!!!" so they wouldnt have to

Lost was a such a copout. They sold the audience on the mystery elements then chickened out when they wrote themselves into a corner again and again, ending the show with a "its all about the characters!!!" excuse. It kills me that people actually defend their choices too, as if people are unreasonable in wanting some answers to their years of shitty cliffhangers.

Is Fringe any good? I heard its ending soon but I've never seen any of it.

The 'game' needs incentives to work together with people

The incentive is supposed to be to stay alive, but there's no real punishment for not doing so and years of extra lives, continues, and checkpoints have conditioned us not to really care.

As far as I could see the only incentive to staying alive was to kill the raging cockfags that did nothing but grief every other player... which was like... everybody I ever saw. Zombies were a backdrop to yet-another online shooter.

Pretty much this, the zombies became totally unimportant and were no real threat once you adjusted to the game mechanics. The griefing shitlords were the real problem.

It doesn't matter if its 1 or 100, they don't get away with it because only one person complained about. People can edit video and photos pretty easily these days too. This is a pretty one sided issue and if it happened to you or a daughter I doubt we'd be receiving the personal responsibility argument.

Yeah, those "kill creature X and bring me Y of their Z" quests and fedex quests were the bomb-diggity!

While I will admit that there isn't much of a skill/weapon skill tree, the only thing that's really a drag on my long term play is the lack of end-game content that engages me. Otherwise, I got a few hundred hours of entertainment out of it, and when I come back there will be new content (yay!) waiting for me for free.

Which is more than I can say for *any* other MMO I've ever played.

That's why I like this more than any other MMO I've played, that stuff is there if you want it but it's totally optional. I wasn't enjoying the events in the Iron Marches so I just left, went to a different area that had a different setup entirely.

One of the women had her boyfriend take pictures of her unaware, she didn't have a choice. You're not considering all of the possibilities and no matter what, one stupid choice shouldn't be a profitable venture for a revenge porn company.

People don't really like Activision either, they only have a few franchises to fuck up unlike EA who bought half the industry. Take-Two is not even on the same level as EA or Activision. See picture.

Hello,

As someone who has covered our boards a while I wanted to let you know the below info about that group that was announced internally here today. This is resource reallocation and alignment to new and emerging form factors and designs, and NUC sticks around for sure. It is good news in that there is a robust ecosystem of board vendors in your friends at Asus, Gigabyte, MSI, etc…. Also in that these great board engineers we have are moving to cool new form factors where board expertise is even more vital – small form factors, Ultrabook, desktop AIO etc…

We disclosed internally today that Intel’s Desktop Motherboard Business will begin slowly ramping down over the course of the next three years. As Intel gradually ramps down its motherboard business we are ramping up critical areas of the desktop space including integration of innovative solutions for the PC ecosystem such as reference design development, NUC and other areas to be discussed later.

The internal talent and experience of twenty years in the boards business (which until recently has been largely focused on desktop tower type designs) is being redistributed to address emerging new form factors -- desktop and mobile – and to expand Intel’s Form Factor Reference Design (FFRD) work and enable our partners to develop exciting new computing solutions.

The Desktop segment continues to be a major focus for Intel with hundreds of products across many subsegments and applications. Intel expects the broad and capable DT motherboard ecosystem (ie Asus, Gigabyte, MSI and many others) to fully support Intel’s growing roadmap and large worldwide customer base. Intel’s Desktop Motherboard Business will not develop any new Intel branded desktop motherboards after completion of Haswell-based 4th gen Core launch products in 2013 and will continue to support all products sold through the warranty period included with the specific product.

Fuck that is not a good sign. Intel reference boards quite often set expected feature sets for the rest of the industry.
