It naturally makes us slightly antsy. Frankly, I think for some it's a question of advanced age, too. And I really don't mean that in a trollish sense.
Think back to when you and I were kids / younger, how we engaged with games back then, that sense of wonder and exploration in just dicking around with a game and seeing what's possible in there. Thing is, those games weren't all perfect, either. They often had clumsy controls, they had bugs as well, and heck a lot of them had spectacularly shoddy writing. But it didn't matter, it was amazing.
Today's games aren't perfect, especially when you're a PC gamer (and I am; consoles don't work for me on many, many levels). And of course the industry is also doing their fair share of things to be genuinely angry about as a customer (especially one who has to work to pay for their games now). But you can still have a lot of fun with them if you try and strive to recapture a bit of that kid spirit, where imperfections in games are interesting quirks rather than sources of frustration. Try to feel like you're a cool augmented super-hero taking on the bad guys. Play.
Some will say that's giving up your customer's rights and failing to demand a better product, but honestly I'd rather be a bit lenient and enjoy myself gaming than make it something negative in my life. I have to disagree there. I get what you're trying to say...but I don't think its a simple question of everyone losing their ability to just have fun with a game.
Take a look at the games I recently had genuine fun with. Trine, Magicka, Sanctum, Revenge of the Titans, Just Cause 2, X3: Terran Conflict.
Most of that list is indie games. All of those games had faults, but they all had a lot of leeway for me to do interesting things in my own way and enjoy the game without a feeling of being hand-held through the experience for the sake of the ever-popular 'awesome' that all developers seem to be trying to ram down our throats these days.
Those are games that were just plain fun. They weren't all trying to be the same thing and do the same things. Those brought me closer to that 'kidlike' feeling you are talking about than most AAA blockbusters I have played in recent memory.
So when I see a game who's predecessor was built on personal freedom and the ability to approach things on your own terms being turned into something else entirely, I'm naturally going to become less receptive to it. Nothing to do with being unable to enjoy something for what it is.
That whole idea of 'dicking around' in a game to see what's possible is often impossible in today's games because developers don't want to take a chance that someone might find that they have taken a 'bad' approach to something and possibly be offended by the need to think about how they play. |

I do have to wonder, though.
Why even use the Dungeon Siege name for the game? It sounds like a decent game in its own right. I doesn't seem to warrant shoehorning into the Dungeon Siege universe.

Why do you think you have to go online first?
Creston
You may have just blown my mind, Creston. Something about the way the offline mode instructions are worded made me think it was only useful for setting up beforehand if I know I'll be offline. Next time the net is down I'll let Steam "think" for longer. Thanks! To speed up the process, just disable your LAN or Wireless card in Windows(whichever you use to access the net). Steam will instantly ask to go to offline mode. The delay occurs when your LAN/Wi-fi connection is still active...Steam is trying and retrying to connect to to its servers. |

Bought, bought and bought!
You can't go wrong with an offer like this. I respect and support indie devs.
Also, while I'm on the topic. Pick up a copy of Sanctum!
It's very much worth it. But if you don't believe me...you can go to their facebook page and try for a beta key. I'm sold on the single beta map alone... |

Elessar wrote on Apr 11, 2011, 15:24: In hindsight, yeah the idea of saying something is similar or a clone, is one in the same. I guess what it boils down to for me is, people should just say it will be like any other MMO that's out. To that, I'd say... yeah, no shit.
Like you mentioned, we look for what's different and if that appeals to us we get it. But if you've been a gamer long enough (and most of us have), you know that games innovate upon one another. Sometimes in large jumps, others in small bits. Until we get our hands on it (or read reviews) to understand how ability, skill tree and class mechanics differ from previous mmo titles, then no one really knows. But if you're calling it a clone simply because it's an rpg that has abilities, skill trees and classes, then that's just silly. See, I think that's the point for a lot of folks when they look for something different.
The fact that the game has abilities and skill trees isn't what would make it a 'WoW clone'. But if those skills, classes and abilities only truly differ from WoW in that they are named differently, then I'd say its pretty close to clone territory.
The point is that that the healer, tank, DPS thing has been done to death. It's tired and constricting and if you've done a similar system in EQ and WoW...then you pretty much know whats coming if TOR takes the same approach. And really, it shouldn't.
That's probably what makes people grit their teeth, the more info they get on the game. In the end, Bioware themselves are essentially saying 'don't worry...those familiar roles/abilities you know and love that are staple in all MMOs are there'.
Even though those roles don't even remotely apply to Star Wars in any real sense.
The 'City of' games may have their issues, but I truly do applaud the fact that they made villains entirely different than the same old, same old crap that you can find in every MMO(stalkers aside).
I face palm because there is no 'tank jedi' or 'DPS jedi' or 'healor jedi'. All Jedi are extremely friggin' dangerous in a fight and have a range of abilities that only makes them even more so and more survivable than most things in the galaxy. |

BioWare has shown off plenty of the game, so no, I don't think my pre-judgement of the game is unreasonable. It's WoW wearing a space suit. More generic bullshit. As if WoW didn't derive anything from former MMOs. You can find similarities in almost any game within genres. I think that the point being made here is that we don't need another same-grind game masquerading as something new and interesting, when the basic game mechanics would likely offer nothing more than what is available in dozens of other MMO clones.
Serious Sam: Second Encounter is an FPS and so is Metro 2033...yet there are major differences in their approach to gameplay and story-telling(well...none really in Serious Sam...but you get my point).
WoW on the other hand, doesn't really set itself apart from other fantasy MMOs by doing anything different...Blizzard just took all the mechanics that already exist and polished them...repeatedly. Making a game that is so dumb and simple anyone could play...and not surprisingly(combined with a herculean marketing effort and their existing fanbase), pretty much everyone did.

A quick check on that Boone bug seems to reveal that it should be a pretty simple fix for the developers.
Why they wouldn't have corrected it by now is a mystery. Makes me want to wait for the GOTY edition like I did with FO3. Which I just may end up doing.
Plenty of other things to play in the interim. |

But why would they? An enchanted longsword that's used against someone who is magic immune is still a longsword. It should still do the same damage as a normal longsword does. Trying to balance that out would be... strange? Not really. Plenty of RPGs have multiple, non-enchanted versions of the same basic weapon type, each with variable damage. Some blades are crafted better than others. A rusty, dull, iron sword isn't as effective as a sharp, clean, steel sword. I dunno Jerykk, usually in an RPG you use the non-enchanted stuff until you find enchanted stuff and then you never look back.
The reason it probably feels strange in TES is that enchanted stuff becomes easy to get after a while so you see all these other swords that you will never use.
My only issue would be having the common enemies you fight wear all the same enchanted stuff you do all the time. |

I know very few people that actually replace their desktops with laptops, etc.
And, as a counterpoint to that, the only people I know that still own a desktop built their own. And that's two of us. Every single other person I know is exclusively laptop. They don't want to dedicate space to a desktop and want the ability to work anywhere in their home. Mostly they want the ability to sit on a couch and fuck around online while watching TV.
Hell, even my company doesn't do much in the desktop front anymore. Most of us get laptops, docking stations and monitors. Which is quite funny(and sad) because laptop components cost a hell of a lot more than their PC counterpart and desktops are easier to repair.
I've lost count of the number of people who come into our shop crying at how they can't afford to replace their laptop which is dead and just out of warranty when they hear the cost of a laptop motherboard. And yet they never learn.
Owning a laptop is fine...I'd just never own one as my main system or unless my job demanded that I own one...in which case my company would be the one providing it.
People get laptops/notebooks/netbooks and sit them on a table at home and never take them anywhere. They routinely drop them and mistreat them in ways that they could never easily do with a desktop and then act surprised when they are replacing one every couple years.
Most people just need them. Its just that everyone thinks notebooks are 'sexy'. |

People keep harping about X's UI, even after Terran Conflict. What was wrong with the UI in Terran Conflict? You could use the keyboard or mouse, everything was accessible in, at most, two clicks? I never get that complaint. In X2 the UI was quite irritating, but after TC it just seems as if people harp about the UI because that's the thing to do about X?
Creston I'm not sure what the issue with the UI is either. If anything, its probably a bit too streamlined. Which is why I got myself PSC01's cockpit mod which adds distinctive cockpits for each ship type and race type.
In terms of the X games though, I got X3:TC on your recommendation as well as someone else on this board and I have to say it was one of my best buys to date.
The X games are complex without forcing you to delve into that complexity unless you're ready. TC also looks fantastic.
Egosoft's forums have some of the coolest people I've met online and they go out of their way to offer advice and suggestions on all aspects of the game.
Whatever Egosoft is announcing, I'm hoping for another complex space sim.

The only piracy DRM slows is the "give a friend the cd" kinda thing. In the age of torrents, that method probably accounts for less than 1% of all piracy. If someone is so technically inept that they can't even copy and paste a crack, there's really no need for online activations, limited installs or any other elaborate DRM scheme. A rudimentary disc-check would be just as effective. And yet those people exist. They just call their friends to do it for them when they can't get the crack to work. |

The problem with innovation in the RTS genre is that it invariably comes down to 'make it dumber'.
Take DoW 2. If I wanted to play an RPG, trust me, there are tons of decent ones out there. I want to play an RTS...with base building and research etc. I want to play a game that is about the tactical side of RTS. Not some kind of wargear hunt with boss fights and a bunch of other crap that doesn't matter.
Starcraft 2 kept their formula. And Blizzard sold how many copies? That must surely mean that classic RTS gameplay needs 'saving' from itself. |
