Rah rah rah evil xbox pirates! They got it a week early, so what.

I wager the number of sales is lower on PC, and the percentage of pirates vs buyers is higher for these big release heavily marketed games. This is why developers whinge about the PC. Less money, more making shit for cunts who wont pay for it. Don't act all hard done by and holier than thou with your "And they say PC gamers are the worst!" Business. We kind of are.

I'm sure there are plenty of dudes here who have been a bit short on funds one week, not quite sure if that bug ridden euro release is worth it, or have the wife complaining about all the money going to steam on the credit card invoice. A quick torrent download whilst you are eating lunch and you are probably up and running faster than steam or EB could manage without endangering steak night.

Casual piracy is rampant on PC. I imagine it's is partaken by the majority of "Enthusiasts" like us on some level. Where as a committed Modchipper is beyond redemption, he is probably a significant minority within the console userbase that does not cause the kind of headache the pandemic PC ISO release disease does for the beancounters at your favorite devloper inc.

The number of sales is lower on PC because the PC audience is smaller...period. That won't change even if you could 100% stamp out piracy. I know its hard for people to accept, but lower profits due to a smaller audience is the only thing that drove publishers away from the PC.

Piracy or not...we're pickier buyers than the console crowd who will just eat up whatever publishers tell them is cool. You can't make the same amount of money on PC that you can on console without a damn good exceptional game.

I'm sure that Skyrim sold very well on PC, but those sales alone probably would not justify the cost of making the game. And I don't think that's due to piracy...its just the size of the market at work.

The big publishers are interested in AAA blockbusters and not much else. The PC market is extremely diverse with a lot of genres that don't work well on console.

Piracy is there and it's going nowhere. Games can still be successful on the PC. Indie devs and smaller developers and publishers have been proving that for a while now. Hell, even Bioware said that Mass Effect 1 and 2 sold very well on PC, as did Dragon Age Origins.

Piracy is the quick and convenient smokescreen that the industry uses to justify their focus on consoles and their excuse when a game that is sub-par doesn't sell well.

Every single high profile game released in the past two years has been leaked and playable on the Xbox360 for at least a week before street date. Every. Single. One.

Yet PC gamers still take all the blame for piracy.

We're the scape in the goat. Get used to it...

That's kinda pathetic. I was expecting that the Xbox version would be out early, but I thought Origin was doing something similar to a Steamworks release.

Guess they haven't really gotten that part down yet. Maybe for DA3...

I just don't see this working out.

I love Martin's work...but it doesn't really make me want to play games based on it.

Well of course they did. Stupid is the new...um...smart! Yes...that's it!!

such a joke compared to Skyrim.

I bought Skyrim at full price.

I'll buy ME3 at about the $10 to $15 price point.

Fail.
It's Apples and Oranges. The only thing these games really have in common is that they fall under the genre 'Action/RPG.' The games are trying to achieve two different goals (from a gameplay perspective) Though there are things that Skyrim outdoes ME on, and visa versa.

Of course, if you really need someone to point out the differences in these games, then you just haven't even tried. I would argue they are of similar value, for differing reasons.

I dunno. I don't think ME3 is worth $60. I'm not going to argue that it may be worth $50, but there aren't many games I'd pay $60 for. Skyrim is one of them based on the number of hours of game I get and the fact that its a fun game whose potential is multiplied 100-fold by mods alone.

The problem with the online requirement isn't so much that most people have internet connections. Some people have pretty horrible internet connections. Some folks live in the boondocks or other areas where net connections are spotty.

Its fine to feel smug and say 'too bad', but there is a difference between requiring an online activation (even if its required whenever you start the game), and requiring a consistent and decent internet connection for a smooth play experience. Especially for a game like Diablo...

I have a decently reliable connection...but I don't my game to literally stop and allow me no progress when I'm playing. I can pull my network cable in the middle of Sanctum, Orcs Must Die, Skyrim, Terraria, Mount & Blade, Prototype, Xotic and pretty much all my games and continue to play with no interruption. If I want to play D3 single player, then I expect that my experience doesn't go in the toilet because my ISP suddenly hitches or I kick the switch on my DSL modem. That's just retarded.

The Sims 3
Steam: $29.99

FIFA Manager 11

So ok, there's one. Apparently you guys get shafted in the UK, but in NA, the prices are virtually identical for all games.

Not just in the UK. I'm in the Caribbean and I get the apparently UK shaft. I don't get that on Steam.

Having all be rosy in the US does not mean that it is rosy everywhere. Also...I don't benefit from Origin sales. When there is a sale and someone on Blues points me to it on Origin...I don't get offered the sale price. I never get that crap happening with Steam.

Blah blah blah Steam saved PC gaming that was never going anywhere in the first place, Valve is the bestest ever and in the same breath folks being dishonest about EA's prices which are equal or lower in some repects.

Same ol putting certain publishers on a pedastal while blasting others. Gamers on the whole make no sense to me.

I've never benefited from a sale on Origin. Everytime someone says there is a sale there I go and find that it doesn't apply to me. I've yet to find a Steam sale that I wasn't able to take advantage of unless the product wasn't available for my region specifically.

So I'm sorry...but Origin has proven to be pretty shitty for me. Segmenting sales based on regions is crap. Something is either on sale or its not.

Actually right now they have Orcs Must Die for 13.99 Euros while Steam has it for 14.99 US dollars. Yeah...I'm loving the good deals on Origin.

Slashman, our data shows that the majority of $ is made in aesthetics (even for strategy games). People purchase the other type of content to trade money for time in order to access alternate experiences even though they are perfectly balanced in power.

Since I don't know where your research came from I can't exactly argue, but I wonder if you are not looking at MMOs and relating them to your game.

Aesthetics would be a selling point for some, but I'm a bit skeptical that having your purchasable commanders and champions no more powerful than the free stuff is going to drive sales.

I think that like all F2P games, it will start out balanced, but as time goes on and you add content, the stuff you add will simply be better than the stuff you started with(both the free and buyable items).

Jaguar I completely agree. We've tried out best to wipe those three main concerns out. No buying power, no pushy pushy etc. In addition, we are focusing on not having to grind to unlock the fun stuff. E.g a given faction's units are all available right off the bat - not need to grind to unlock the anti-cavalary unit or what have you.

If that is truly the case, then why go F2P at all? Usually F2P means that there is stuff that will separate people who buy from people who just choose to play your game for countless hours without paying.

What would compel people to purchase anything? Aesthetics is more appealing for MMORPG type people than competitive multiplayer types(at least I always thought so).

If your purchasable commanders or champions are so very well balanced against the free stuff and can be unlocked anyway, why would someone buy content?

Jordan said it in Wired's interview:

“Honestly, I would do it with an Asian cast ... The reason the characters had white hair in the Apple II original is because it was the only color that would stand out against the black background. It didn’t really make sense to have blondes in 16th-century Japan...”

It was a design problem so I guess the cover artist did based on that computers' limitations.

That's a convenient answer, but the problem is that the facial features of the hero and princess aren't oriental either. If they had even slightly Japanese looking features with the blonde hair I could forgive it...plenty of Japanese men and women dye their hair...you still won't mistake them for caucasians when you see them. The warlord on the box art had oriental features

The side quests are just like any other RPG. They all are fetch quest. I'm still waiting for the first RPG where the NPC's are lazy and cowards.

All RPG quests ultimately boil down to fetching, delivering or killing stuff. However, you can make these tasks more engaging by adding interesting characters, branching paths, ambiguous moral choices, compelling backstory, etc. KOAR doesn't really do this.

Yeah...this is looking like a $10 sale purchase. Absolutely no reason to pay full price for something like that.
