It's interesting that, judging from the LoP forums, some folks are able to play through the game with few crashes but a lot are unable to get past the first mission.

I was following the forums for a while and there were a lot of people saying to wait to buy the game because there was no concrete information on it in terms of gameplay videos. The forum rep kept doging the questions of showing gameplay vids or more indepth previews.

I'm pretty sure the devs knew what was going on and that Kalypso had to know as well. I just don't see how holding off for 3 more months could have hurt them worse than this release. Wall

Completely agree, who would put on Uplay after having such an obvious security flaw recently?

WHOOHOO!!! I didn't preorder!!!

Anyway, Endless Space is tiding me over just fine and they released a big patch for it yesterday too.

LoP doesn't seem quite as bad as SoTS2 was on release so they can probably get to a 'decent' state with a few patches.

And for the record, I really don't like GalCiv 2 that much. The ship design feature is huge chunk of time wasting when they could have done better graphics and just let you add modules like ES. It works out EXACTLY the same because everything else is cosmetic. The battles are a yawn fest, and no, I don't play space 4x games just for the empire building.

I'm probably alone in this but I thought Terror from the Deep was a better game and way more tense. Something about finding a downed alien ship underwater was just awesome.

Most of the complaints about TFTD were that it was too hard to make it to the endgame. The necessary research items needed etc.

I thought that the game itself was great.

I was excited for Enemy Unknown, but the $60 price tag is not something I'm happy about. I'll wait for a sale.

The MMORPG genre really needs fresh ideas though but no one will sink the money into it unless its a sure thing.

Here's the irony: There is no 'sure thing' in the MMO space anymore.

EQ clones, WoW clones...the market is saturated. I really have lost interest in MMOs because they refuse to change. I'm no longer impressed by crappy skill-click-hotbar gameplay, held together by the 'thrill' of playing in a gameworld full of other people. I'm probably not the only one...

I'm sick of MMOs that come close to doing something different and then stop short of actually doing it.

I like the way you could glue ship parts together in Galciv 2 to make your own. I didn't like the way they handled combat though. I wanted the option of moving my own ships around sometimes, not have it predetermined by algorithms every time.

GalCiv's ship design feature was pointless. You could make a ship look like anything but it didn't matter. I have no idea what it was even in the game for. Yeah I could make a Klingon warbird...but it wouldn't do jack squat different than if I had made a simple cube with the same modules.

At least Endless Space gives you some combat actions to perform and the graphics don't look like crap.

There is an awesome new 4X space game out called Endless Space. You should check it out.

I already own it and I am really liking it so far.

It does need some more things added and the devs have acknowledged this and will continue to improve the game.

It's still a really good game though.

They lost me at turn based combat.

When I have massed fleets in space with huge ships and unspeakably powerful guns, I think about Homeworld. I don't think about moving them on little squares on a 2-D map.

Are these the same guys who made Ascendancy - one of my favourite games of all time? Some of those art assets are directly from it. Who's going to be playing this?

I will as soon as I finish Endless Space.

BAH!! You can't finish that. It's Endless!!!!

Seriously though, I am really liking Endless Space. I can't seem to resist that 'one more turn' impulse.

Legends of Pegasus seems like it will be decent, if only to scratch the itch til SoTS2 is finally done. Or maybe it'll make me forget about SoTS altogether.

OK...how the hell is Skyrim still in the top 10?

Will it never die?? Has any other game ever done this? Should Bethesda not be kissing the crusty feet of every PC gamer right now?

Strangely enough, I found it was a great game. Funny thing about opinions.

Don't worry about it. I'm pretty sure his 'opinion' is crap.

Sanctum is a great game and I wish Coffee Stain Studios well with the sequel.

If you play Civilization a lot, upgrading from a dual-core processor to something like Sandy Bridge or Ivy Bridge will save you literally hours during a large scale, full length match. It cuts the waiting time between turns, while AI moves are being calculated, by more than half (I measured 50% decrease between i7-920 and Ivy Bridge, so I have to assume a dual-core would be even worse by comparison). Grand Theft Auto IV, and presumably any other game Rockstar puts out with the same engine, is VERY CPU dependant. In fact, I remember upgrading from Core 2 Duo to first-gen Core i7 increased my FPS a whole lot more than upgrading from an 8800 GTS to a GTX 275. Oblivion, Skyrim, Fallout 3/NV and similar games on that engine also greatly benefit from a better CPU because of all the AI routines and other world simulation that goes on.

It's not necessarily about dual-core versus quad-core... Just that if you're still using a dual-core on a desktop, that is a very old CPU, and it's holding back all the games you're playing, albeit to varying degrees. Pairing a Core 2 Duo with any mid-range or better graphics card from the past couple generations is remarkably silly.

Games that are poorly optimized are usually CPU-dependent and also usually only take advantage of two cores at most. Skyrim doesn't make full use of quad core CPUs, for example. Like 90% of the load is put on one core. In most cases, if a game is well-optimized, having a Dual Core clocked at 3.0 GHz or higher is fine because a well-optimized game is GPU dependent, not CPU dependent.

Well are you then saying that the Witcher 2 is poorly optimized? When I bumped from a Core 2 Duo to a Core 2 Quad, my performance in that game changed drastically for the better. Or is it just that the game was aimed at quad cores from the start?

Also, I can't see how a game that does mostly number crunching would benefit from a good GPU more than a CPU. So I'd think that games like Civilization would fit into this category as a good example of dual vs quad.

Jaggies? Force AA or use a wrapper/injector.

But that would require *gasp* effort!!

If it runs similarly to the first one and supports mouse and keyboard decently enough, then I really don't see myself getting too worked up over it. At least no mention of a low volume bug...so that's a good thing.

I just want to run around doing horrible violence and causing random destruction...if it does that...then I'll likely pick it up on sale. I'm still recovering from the Steam summer sale. It's going to be a while before I work through this backlog.

Unless the driver versions are mentioned you can never be sure what the issue is. I downgraded back from the R304 series of nvidia drivers because of DOZENS of issues in games, using 295.73 right now, on a 460 GTX and have no issues whatsoever. That said, I can't say whether I have issues in prototype 2 because it ain't out in my region ;p

But when in doubt, downgrade from the R300 series drivers

Another reason why I don't bother with ATI cards. I really hate that ATI users will inevitably be the ones with issues when a new game gets released.

I'm not into space sims like Freespace. I need RPG elements. Basically, I'll accept nothing other than a game like Freelancer. Very frustrating that we have yet to get a game(a good game) similar to it.

I'm happy with no more Freelancer. If I'm playing a space flight sim...it better support a flightstick and not have pre-programmed 'maneuvers'.

I am really really enjoying that game. I was a bit reluctant at first since I don't really like GTA very much, but SR3 really won me over with its over-the-top wackiness. The wrestling moves alone have made it worthwhile...

I'm not sure Sword of the Stars 2 will ever be finished. They release two patches a week and have been doing so since the game's release. Either the game was still pre-alpha or they keep breaking stuff with each patch. Probably both.

No...it's not that they break stuff with each patch(not that this hasn't happened). It's just that the game was a lot less further along than people imagined. I've been monitoring the Steam and Kerberos forums and watching the patch notes. The patch notes have changed in nature over the past few months. A lot less crash fixes and now adding things like advanced AI code into the game.

Since I picked it up for $7 at a past sale, I'm just going to wait a few more months before I install it(hopefully it gets the all clear by then). I have a ton of stuff to play right now anyway.

I'm not sure what what pre-alpha even means in this case, but the game was no where near beta on release. What we were seeing, IMO, are patch notes that game devs would use amongst themselves when developing a game, not stuff that you'd show beta testers or end users. I think the only reason those patches got pushed to live was to give disgruntled buyers some indication that progress was being made.

I think it will be finished...just not for a few more months.
